So glad to raise a kid in a community similar to what I was raised in. Imagine gangs of 8-12yo running amuck without supervision. Beyond even hearing the deafening Mom two-finger whistle. They might even cross the main Hwy to get to the DQ or Canco for a pizza slice (little buggers stealing coin from their parents I bet!). Worst Karens are usually at the rink yelling at the refs for the peewee games.
Mom gave me a watch cause I was deaf (fixed in g1/6yo) and told me to be back from playing in the woods by dinner. Usually had a hound or two accompanying so critters weren’t an issue. I was 13 and out with the 22 shooting grouse off of the Macleod hardware store MTB special 10km from home. Riding same shit bike down the railway tracks 10+km to a favourite fishing hole on the lake at daybreak. 16 and I was taking the 30-30 before school to find a buck, got lucky and got to stay home from school to dress the animal (Dad was away from home for work even).
My daughter will not get a mobile phone until her 16 B-day. The Horror! If she is not back by dinner without notice, she knows the consequences. Humans are creating shittier and shittier social systems. WTF!?!
Kid shoulda had a non-removable GPS'd ankle monitor with up to a 4 hour delay on the alarm/zapping. Or maybe an AirTag.
