Getting a new bike dialed in.
I picked up a Revel Rascal v2 about a month ago and I’ve been getting used to the new size (went L instead of M) and trying to get the suspension dialed in. This past weekend I ran a bit more sag than I’ve been running on most Revels I’ve ridden, and it’s magic. Fully clicked and it made me soooo happy

Having a busy week where there is no time for riding... only to go on a ride and feel stronger and faster than you did before the little break. It turns out resting is good for your riding!
Yeah. Did 16mi last Sat at 7 weeks post hip replacement. Felt good to do something other than walk, even if it was just on roads and with flats.Quote:

Schralph will probably be happy to hear this given his endorsement of FF helmets, but I finally rode DV with a full face and it was hardly less comfortable than my half shell. I've been blessed/cursed with a weird, small head so I get to reap the benefits of expensive helmets on clearance for wicked deals. Ended up with a Specialized Gambit that weighs in at 600gr for a small and is "DH rated" per the ASTM spec.
Another thing I've been stoked on is even just one coaching session/lesson. My sister is getting back into riding under better circumstances and has been loving it. Booked the two of us a private lesson on the fundamentals. I thought it would mainly be for her benefit and maybe I'd catch a useful tidbit or two, but I got a ton out of it. Putting that stuff into practice is definitely starting to pay off in confidence and speed. I'll be looking into more coaching or clinics in the future for sure.

Had a tire plug hold on the 2nd attempt of fixing it before giving up altogether (first attempt ended in me taking my bike for a nice little DH ride). It's the little things in life!
I was pedaling through town last night and rolled up to a stoplight next to a guy in a diesel chevy. It had the oversized aftermarket exhaust, and was making the loud rumble of a vehicle that has had a significant engine remap. As the light turned green, I prepared for the worst. But he pulled out very respectfully and zero coal was rolled upon me. I was pleasantly surprised.

What does it say about the state of things that someone NOT rolling coal on a cyclist is cause for celebration?
My daughter has really enjoyed her NICA team so far, especially riding with some other girls her age. Also still enjoying riding with her old man too.
Took her up to US Nationals XC on Saturday to spectate which is at our local ski area which was lots of fun watching, plus ride a paved pump track nearby with some friends.
New skills trail project at our little (likely closing) K-6 school is a go. School may be in trouble, but the space is about to become a major community hub anyway. Also a sick little skills part to boot :)
I just built a wheel with DT Swiss pro head nipples. Never used them before, and I was slightly annoyed that I had to go buy a new torx nipple driver, but holy shit those things make building a wheel so much quicker and easier. I'm a fan.

Taking care of some overdue quiver maintenance.
I got my roadie up and running again with a new FD, some fresh meats and a freehub clean/lube for maximum rolling action.
Psyched to finally try some Conti GP5k TRs.
Then my commuter e-bike finally got a kickstand, a new chain and rear brake pads. Kickstands are super underrated.

A well appointed handlebar bag… everything in right there in easy reach.
There’s something strangely satisfying about pinging the ever living shit out of one or both rims on something hard and sharp, the kinda hit you feel in your joints and teeth, and not hearing/feeling the telltale signs of tire damage. Bonus points for no signs of rim damage on post ride inspection.
Couple weeks ago I tried a weird gap in a nasty rock garden and undershot it a bit, got to hear my front rim ring like a bell after nearly bottoming out the fork. I got bounced hard enough that the rear went clear over the rock. The next 5 seconds were tense anticipation until I realized I still had a wheel, the tire wasn't flat, and I hadn't gone over the bars into more rocks. The relief was huge, especially since I had another 15 seconds of rock garden and being off line with a tacoed wheel or even a flat would have been very painful. I found a couple detensioned spokes when I got to the car, cheap price to pay!Quote:

Super proud of the Z kids riding a few miles of bike path and singletrack to jump a little cliff in to the river last night. They planned out their own little adventure and took me along for the ride. I did not think they would actually jump but they both did.

My last few bikes were custom builds with choice components. Last summer I bought a complete with an SLX build with the idea of fuck it, I'm just gonna ride the thing and upgrade as parts wear out.
Now I'm excited about the smallest of upgrades which reminds me of the excitement of first getting into bikes. Also, the mid-grade components on the bike all work extremely well. Amazing how great bikes have become in the last few years.
I actually successfully repaired a puncture with a piece of bacon today. That made me say fuck yeah, cause it meant I could get away from the skeeters. And finish riding.
Plugs are awesome and just another reason tubeless r00lz!
Got my first flat in at least a couple years last week riding Philip's Ridge off Teton Pass with Rideit. Snake bite with a large-ish tread cut and an associated puncture near the bead. Plugged the tread cut an blasted it with a CO2. It didn't seal and I discovered the bead puncture. A plug sealed that one with authority and I threw an XL (car plug) into the tread cut which sealed it nicely. The 15g CO2 still had enough juice to get me up to proper pressure and ride it out! Even with a failed first attempt it was minimal drama compared to dealing with a tube. Also carbon rim is fine. Expected at this point but still.
Speaking of Teton Pass, that shit makes me happy!
After Tacos at the Coach, decided to thumb a lap with the lady to show her some of the jump trails. Haven't seen those jumps in a decade, during which time I had a string of injuries that had me scared and questioning everything and not riding as much, got old and out of shape, skills got dull, etc. Wondered if I'd ever hit those jumps again. Well, I was feeling it and stepped up to about half of them on that one lap. Felt so oooo good! I credit the quality of the building, haha, but still awesome for me.
