Wonder if the new chair was operational before the storms hit. It is typical in Chile to be finishing construction after the first storm, but they did start early….
So far Temuco has received 281mm of rain, 30% more than normal and 4 times last year at the same date, with a low freezing level. This means the base is already built and future precipitation that is not rain will be paradise, all through the region, to at least October.
Currently, the mountain passes to Argentina, from Portillo to Puyehue, are all closed due to snow. Good sign.
Thank you for the updates.
Starting to plan a for this trip. Looking at arriving in Santiago and working my way south. How is public transport down there for someone travelling between ski locations? Can anyone recommend any towns or resorts that should be on the top of my list?
Finally made it up to the central zone

Best time to visit? Fly to Santiago or Argentina?

The golden questions.
“Normally”, for snow cover, chance of powder, and reasonable weather, mid-July to late August. As Maule south has a base already, June could be great this year. Precipitation peaks June-July, with less frequent replenishing storms in August and September.
School winter holidays are sooner this year, June 22 to July 7, so from then on would be best.
As for where to fly to, it is more like Malargue, or Santiago. In both cases you can drive south, taking side trips into the mountains, with a few ski areas to visit.
Pro tip - Argentina is no longer a cheap destination for US$ travelers.
Anyone going up from Santiago for a tour this weekend???

As a dry spell sets in, a good look at Santiago is in order, before the smog takes over. These are from a canal that snakes around the Manquehue mountain, and doubles as a trail that can be ridden

I still remember vividly the time Casey took me skiing at La Parva on a powder day almost 10 years ago! So epic! Linking LP with VN will be a huge amount of terrain.
Glad you guys are getting some snow to open up!
