Sharks, man

I was swimming at a crowded beach on the west coast of Florida in chest deep water when I saw a fin go by. I figured it must be a dolphin so I swam after it. Fortunately I didn't catch it. No one else in the water noticed it and I'm sure it wasn't the only one at the beach that day. Most tourists have no idea they're swimming with sharks all the time in Florida. If they did no one would go to Florida. Which seems like a good reason to publicize it. Of course, DeSantis would just send all the sharks to NY and California.

I subscribe to the theory that if you grab a spoonful of water and it tastes salty then there's probably shark around so maybe this is all just hype. Either way, if it brings us the Jaws prequel that focuses on Quint's origin story then I'm all in.

A couple weeks ago on Hilton Head I was tossing a ball with my son, sister and nieces in the waves. My sister points out about 25 yards at a fin and gives me the shark sign over her head. No big deal, it's out there and moving along so we just wade in a bit to knee-deep water keeping an eye on it.

Next thing you know here comes the lifeguard on his 4-wheeler calling everyone out of the water. Wouldn't you know it with everyone out you can clearly see the ripple of a bait ball moving along the shoreline with little shad jumping out all over the place and at least 4-5 sharks tailing after it. The ball moved down the beach and then back twice before heading out to sea. The Coast Guard helicopter flew up and down the beach twice and the lifeguard gave everyone the all-clear to get back in and went back to where ever he came from.

In 40 years on that beach I've never once seen the water cleared which was wild. What was really cool was about 20 minutes later a pod of dolphin came swimming by in the exact same spot; the kids thought it was the best beach day ever lol.

If the deeper waters are being emptied out en masse, it does make sense it'd drive the sharks toward the vastly less fished shallower coastal areas.

Well scratch South Monomoy Island off the possible beach vacation list.

They're there. They're not looking for people... but if there's seals there they are most definitely looking for seals.... which look a lot like people to them..

Dolphin, skinnier dorsal fin that pops up, goes down, pops up, goes down.. Shark.. fatter triangular fin that skims the surface longer.

Dolphins are easy to identify, not sharky at all. I’m always looking for bull sharks around the lower Hudson. Theoretically they ought to be around but I’ve never seen and never heard of anybody else seeing one. I’ve paddled around the bays on Cape Cod quite a bit also and never saw any though the Atlantic is apparently full of them there. I’ve seen tons of seals but no sharks.

I see dolphin all the time where I'm most frequently on the water in Lowcountry which means the sharks stay away when they're around (which I generally like), but I do know that juvenile Bull Shark are in the coastal rivers and the ICW but like Brownski, I've never seen one (thankfully).

I've had a couple of shark experiences in my day.

First one was tarpon fishing off the coast of Fort Meyer. We hooked into a big ol' fish, my buddy fought it for 30 or 40 minutes, and when we got it released, a big bull shark came and jumped it. Our guide gunned the boat and chased it off, but not before the shark got a big chunk of the tarpon. Our guide was pretty sure it was going to be ok.

Second one was off the north shore of Oahu. My wife had booked us a swimming with sharks boat trip for my birthday, but when we got there the waves were too big for the boat to go out. One of the workers pointed to a group of high school looking kids and said, "they'll take you out, but don't tell my boss," so we headed out into ocean with a couple of surfer girls. We turned out to be the only boat dumb enough to go out, and we all got seasick along the way, but we had a few dozen sharks circling the boat while we swam cage free with them. One of the coolest experiences of my life. The scariest part was seeing 10-15 dorsal fins circling the boat and having the guide go "jump in!" Once you're in with them it's actually super peaceful.

And as for the girl at the beginning of Jaws, you’re right; I’d totally be all in. Likely the boyfriend who didn’t make it into the water but all in up till that point.
