Basically, for $3 / year the cost of the search is covered, HOWEVER, it does NOT cover medical transport. So, in otherwords its free if they don't find you or find you but leave you there, but it cost you if they actually help you. Strange..........I guess it goes to a good cause though.

Hey Ville, the avalanche pictures are gone from this thread, could you re-post them? At least for me they are some of the most memorable pictures from TGR, so it's a pity they are gone from the site.

I have known and helped a few folks that have dragged themselves back inbounds to save a rescue fee.
One of the nice things about Granite Canyon is that it is National Park so resuce is free, but any other OB from Jackson is minimum $500 fee from the sherrif S&R team.
If there is a decent US policy for under $20 per year, I know more than a few folks that would buy it.

get a hiking license (i think that is what it is callled) at city market or any out door store. THis will allow local S&R operations to dip into state coffers to cover the expense of any rescue regardless of the time of year. This is what CO has to offer. Do not know about other states.
Cost is $1 a year and you can buy these in 5 year increments..
I do not think there is a national policy.
