those speed boards sound really good and very interesting, why dont you tell us all about them

HBM... how do you suggest making poles better? Putting dildos on the end for you and your boys after a long hike?
The binding screw interface is the biggest suck. It's a total bummer that each binding has a different screw pattern. But it's pretty clear why. The screws are set to provide maximum support/torque/pull out strength/(insert proper technical term here). I am no engineer but I think it's clear that making a uniform pattern like snowboard bindings is impossible without compromising many of the binding designs out there. Maybe not though. My assumption is that a lot of thought goes into how to mount a binding when the manufacturers produce a new design.
oh, and I bet it's also about cooperation. Who gets the winning hole pattern vs. who has to change theirs to fit the template? I'd personally not want to adopt someone else's hole pattern if it meant going back to the drawing board on my binding that I'd already sold a bunch of units on for the past several years.
I once had a pair of ski poles with detachable grips and you could fill the shaft with booze....not sure it was a good idea though.
HBM...how about a GPS map display on the grip so you and your butt-buddies don't get lost at Vail?
Ski pole with a built in cigarette lighter...now that would be progress!
HBM- How about a ski pole with an ice-axe pick attached?
HBM- How about a ski pole with lasers?
I've seen some grips-as-bongs in my day, so progress is possible.
I've always wanted to see a boot/ski interface that doesn't need a binding. That would be the best binding ever made.
I completely understand the purpose of the ski pole, but because it is there with the skier at all times, why not incorporate some other added benefits?[/QUOTE]

No time to watch this right now but I believe that some of the technology you speak of can be found in the classic scene from this cinematic masterpiece.

Obviously Scotsman gets it.
Nearly every skier carries ski poles around with them all day. Make a ski pole with a bottle opener, screw the grips off and get a multi-tool, add some rope in the shaft and make the ski pole an avy probe, add a saw blade in the shaft, add a scope, add some other benefit.
Seriously, a laser could help in an emergency situation and it could help when you and your bros are pointing at shit and no one sees what you're looking at. BAM, your laser will show them what the fuck you are talking about.
Dildos would be pretty sick too!
HBM-They should make ski poles out of something sustainable and good for the environment/melting glaciers ...like bamboo?
Another ski pole idea--- have a spring loaded base at the bottom of the pole with an on/off switch. When you're in a skating situation the spring would help you push off the snow.
Bamboo poles!!?? NOW, THAT's PROGRESS!
HBM-how about ski poles that you could attach a small video camera to so that you could film yourself skiing and share super POV type videos with your friends showing your face getting face shots.
Fuck laser pointers - I want a laser rangefinder on my pole. "How big you think that cliff is?" BAM. Just bust out your handy-dandy pole-mounted rangefinder.
Of course, it would need some kind of bro-brah core-meter offset built in so the actual height of that 40-footer you've been bragging about doesn't upset your delicate sensibilities.
HBM-Bluetooth in your pole so you could talk into it and use it like a microphone and get your buddies in the gondola to talk into it and make jokes and sing....that would be fun.
eesh auvgeek, it's not like gopro footage has stopped anyone bragging, why would a range finder matter?
aside from a better burlier tech binding that's still lightweight I can't think of anything that really needs dramatic improvement.
I only want 2 things:
+~14-16 DIN inbounds compatible tech binding with toe and heel release
+~1500g boots that fit and ski like a punched plug boot, have a fully functional walk mode that does not sacrifice downhill performance, and both AT and ALPINE compatiblity with the same sole
ok then.
^^Oh, I'd actually really like a range finder sometimes, all kidding aside. Not to stop people from bragging (like I care), but just to know.
But I do agree with you. Burly tech binder is top of the list. And a light touring boot with good heel hold and a stiff, progressive flex would be perfect.
Edit: Marshal beat me to it.
I'd be interested in seeing a little more progression with the learning aide devices like the piece of plastic that connects your tips together. Surely that could be made of carbon or something.
Ski pole as firearm. It'll make those snowboarder vs. skier videos so much more interesting. Bond laid the groundwork years ago and still nothing...
Scotsman50 - How about incorporating some type of flare or roman candle system into the poles (for emergency use only)? or better yet, it could be a mini-explosive launcher so you could do your own backcountry control work.
Another thing, why can't they make split skis? They make split snowboards. It would be pretty sick to be able to break a ski down for backpacking or flying.
