The good thing about philosophy classes are:
Never had a philo class with more than 10 people
You actually get to discuss, whereas in science classes the prof tells you how it works.
I get 1 assignment every 4 weeks or so. I wrote 3 5-7 page papers for my last philosophy class. Besides read and show up, thats all i did for 10 weeks. Not exactly a bad schedule.

My parents wouldn't let me go to a school of that size because some domeshit advisor at the school said "Your son, would be much better in a small university so he won't be distracted." And my folks belived this shit from some jackdick at my HS. So I went to Ole Miss and it was great but it was not where I wanted to be. So I transfered after the first year. I didn't care what my parents thought I did what was right for me, and you know where I went, the mutherfuckinuniversityofutah. It was where I wanted to be mountains, skiing, snowboarding, biking, fly-fishing, beaver hunting, and cheap golf.

Co Springs has way better access than my college of choice, but I went for academics first.

when it comes to college academics Max, remember the following:
1) Being a "good" student at a "bad" school is better than being an "average" student at a "good" school. Not that I am assuming that you would be an average student at a place like Stanford, but the point is that you get out of a school what you put into it. Good students get recognized no matter where they go.
2) A "good" school is not a guarantee of a good education, only a few more open doors from having a "better" name on a piece of paper.
3) Although hard to believe, undergrad school quality means next to nothing as compared to grad school quality. Then, it really does make a difference.
4) Pre-med. I know you think you're set on it, so I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. All I can tell you, from very good experience, is to make sure that you play your cards (school, classes, etc) so that if/when you change your mind, you won't have painted yourelf into too much of a corner down that road. Nothing is irreversible, but I know an awful lot of former pre-meds that suffered more than they should have because they held to a delusional belief that it was the only thing that work for them, even when it was making them miserable, and by the time they realized it senior year, they were pretty behind the 8-ball in terms of switching to something else. Statistically, most people drop out of pre-med. Don't think that the statistic doesn't apply to you too. Also keep in mind that going the med school route entails 4-5 yrears of undergrad, 4-5 years of Med, and 3-4 years of residency. You'll be twice your age before you begin to make more than a teachers pay and are treated like more than the bottom rung. I have all the respect in the world for doctors, but our system is seriously fucked up, and I can't recommend you start down that path right now. As for skiing while being a pre-med, don't count on it.
All that being said, you should still check out CU Boulder. Like Evil and others, I don't care for CO Springs.
It really seems like the bottom line is, if you're going to haul your ass to Colorado for college, why would you choose Colorado Springs? It's obvious you're interested in the state of Colorado because of the skiing, and no one could say C Springs is the best place to be in Colorado in terms of proximity to skiing.Quote:

Goto school that has what you want academically. If it was me I would go somewhere that has exchange programs internationally, that way you can goto school in Europe or wherever. After your done you can move to Whistler or Vail and be a ski bum like me.

Edukashun is 110% what you make of it and has very little to do with the school you attend.
Colorado Mountain College, Breckenridge Campus (or Edwards/Vail compus) do your first two years there and then transfer to CC, DU, Boulder, etc (transfer courses are guarunteed). You'll get your skiing in.
And CC is a good school too. However, what you really need is a different school that's in CO Springs... anyone else imagining Max at the AF Academy? :eek:
Max. Colorado Springs sucks for skiing. It's also a VERY boring town. Great place to raise kids, sure. College? No-no. Night life is nonexistent, and I can't remember the last time a good band came.
Breck is about 1:45 via Hwy 24 if you haul ass( Just don't through Alma) Keystone about 15-20 minutes past that, and A-Basin another 15 past that. Vail is a good 2.5 hrs.
None of these compare to Alta or Snowbird, which would be worth the 8 hour drive. I managed to log about 30-40 days a year despite this distance when I was in HS, but I wouldn't try it in collge, especially CC style. Where's Pinner when you need him? He was always ready to discourage someone from attending CC in the guise of discussing its merits.

I'm at CC right now. The F.U.C.C. still sponsors a ski trip every year. And we still get booted every single year. The list of resorts we're allowed into is decreasing real quick, but they always find somewhere. They also sponsor a 6 day trip to Jackson Hole with hotel and tickets for around $300 I think. I've never actually attended one of the functions before.Quote:

In my opinion, if you are willing to pay for out of state tuition, then you might as well get your money's worth, and attend a private school. The pre-meds I knew at CC (the ones that stuck with it through graduation) are now attending kick ass med schools.
As for skiing out of C. Springs, it sucks. I'm used to getting out every single day on my 300 foot mole hill at home. You're not going to get out more than once a week while in class. Most people get the 5 mountain pass. Breck is never any fun, Vail is fun but a serious haul, keystone is alright, usually A-basin is the ticket. Weekends are nuts everywhere but the basin. The breaks are nice though, 5 day ski weeks at some kids condo or in the bc every month. Can't complain.
Theres lots of backcountry but you have to deal with the sketchy colorado snowpack. And you have to have all of your stuff dialed. It takes a fair amount of time and money to really get into all of that. I took almost a semester off last year so I could climb/ski/mountaineer more.
The town itself sucks. Sucks horrible. I will hopefully never return. There is plenty to throw down at on or near campus in terms of night-life.
You're not going to get any spectacular seasons in as an undergrad anywhere if you're worried about your transcript. At CC theres not much choice about when you take your classes. And if you think you'll have time to go skiing while taking bio-chem in 3 1/2 weeks, fuggetaboutit.

Edit: MAX. The CC schedule sucks major balls for science majors. I'm talking huge sweaty non gold bond using balls. Just think, 12 weeks of Ochem crammed into 3.5 weeks. Not so bad for english or other lib arts classes, but 4 years of 3.5 week chemistry classes would suck. You'd ski more at a regular lib arts school.
We've got this thang called "Jan Plan" which is essentially the CC program, but just for the month of january. A ittybitty semester if you will. You take one class for the month. Smart kids(like myself, dont want to honk my own horn, but TOOT TOOT) take jazz guitar theory, and schedule their lessons on tuesday evening and wednesday morning. Which essentially means a 7 day weekend. The dumb kids(I guess you could call them motivated) take something crazy, LIKE OCHEM, or emt cert. Class 8 hours a day, everyday. For a month. Or...class 1 hour a week, for a month, and ski everyday.
I dont know where this rant is going.
If you want to go to a lib. arts school and ski all the time, new england is where its at. And the skiing doesnt suck that bad either. Plus you've got awesome awesome rock climbing and ice climbing.
I highly recommend these events. It's to bad a few have to ruin it for the rest, but these trips were definitely some of the most memorable.Quote:

I'm a physics major, its not that bad. You learn to lift a finger real quick. Your midterm is 2 weeks after the first day of class and your final is a week and a half after that. If you're in a hard lab class you'll never see the sun. I had a class where lab ran from about 8:30am - midnight, every weekday, with lab time over the weekend as well. Another required taking air measurments every 4 hours, around the clock, seven days a week, all month.Quote:

But mostly its not that time consuming. Class is 9-12 for everyone, everyday. If you're in a non-science class, you've only got maybe 2-3 hours of reading/work after that. So you're done by noon, everyday, and then they make you take time off to read a book. And you're sitting right next to the mountains. I wish I could find a job that is that plush.
My mom went to CC with the intent of becoming a Dr. (met dad who was at the AF Acad). She finished her BS @ CC and loved the college. It was the same philosophy then.
Actually, their WFR, OEC, EMT-B, and Paramedic classes and programs are some of the best around. Their outdoor leadership program at the Timberline Campus is extremely well regarded.Quote:
