^^ awesome. that's the kind of stuff I wanted to hear in this thread: That he's for real a decent guy.
Anyone can ham it for the camera, and do wild publicity stunts, and anyone can act all nicey-nicey at poster signings. But to hear that he's actually a decent dude once you get past the rockstar personna makes me glad he's on our team.
Everytime I've crossed paths with him, he's been pretty normal and cool to be around.
I guess I stand corrected. I have no personal experience with the guy, just what I have seen on video, and while I believe his stance on shaped and fat skis sucks, if fellow maggots say he is a good guy, then I believe it. I shouldn't have judged him based on a few minutes of a video clip. For that I appologize.
I gotta say, every time I've run into Plake and his wife, it has been a cool experience. Like said before, he is the ultimate ambassador of skiing. I really don't get the impression that anyone in the "Biz" is more stoked about skiing than Plake.
A few years ago, I see his trailer parked near the lift at Park City. There is a heisted Red Bull cooler tied to bumper (drunk prize I'm sure). I pull my truck over and steal it (he stole it too right?). It still sits in the living room now. Well, last year at the Warren Miller show, he's signing posters and I tell him the story. He goes off laughing and recalling the whole night. We talked for probably 10 minutes (with 100 people waiting to see him). We then talked lines at Alta and again, he's totally stoked. He's a ham for the camera but he's real in real life, gotta dig him.
