Super Goats only come in a 193, in limited runs. Billy Goats are available in 189 though.

Any ski with RES (BG, SG, CD) is going to feel loose. At the same time, each of the skis you mentioned, including the 189 BG, is going to have more of a backbone than your old Squads.

The W114 likes to be skied aggressively (forward), but its subtle tail rocker allows the (presumably good) skier to break it loose in tight terrain and/or slow-medium speeds.

With all that being said, the 189 BG is the "closest", although completely different, to your current setup.

Very much agree with what is stated above. Owned the same OG Squad 7 and skied it quite a bit. I replaced it with the 2014 186 BG, which is looser, more playful, but has a ever so slightly more damp ride. While others may disagree, the SG, in my opinion (own a normal flex non-Aever pair), is not loose. It needs space. The current 189 BG is the ski you seek in comparison to the Squad 7, but it is not as loose as the previous generation BG it replaces. Way better as a big-mtn ski with ability to manage tight spots and trees and probably a better all-arounder than the Squad 7, but I wouldn't call that tail very "loose".

What those two said and you could even go with the 184 since the squad measures at 186.

Thanks for the responses. The Squad has always felt a little small so i think the 189 Billy Goat may well be the trick. I’ve used the 196 Renegade a bit which is why the SuperGoat was on my radar but if the Billy Goat can be a bit more substantial that the Squads that ought to be fine. I just want something that is stable for big turns in open spaces but can be pivoted and manageable in trees as needed.

Billy Goat Smallest Amount of Snow?

What's up yall? I just got some 189 BGs and I'm stoked to take them out, and I don't want to wait. What's the worst conditions you would take your BGs out on?

Shitfuck conditions. Not afraid to ever take them out for their sake, as they are well made and their materials exceed the industry average. They can handle a wide variety of conditions except maybe an ice sheet which would limit the fun factor. Also a wide ski in early season helps float above some of the obstacles. But I would caution you to cool your jets so as to not acquire an early end to your season. I prefer to let the first snow settle in, get maybe a foot or two down depending on the ground conditions below. It is just more enjoyable and not worth missing out on the rest of the season.

Pretty excited about this pair to be honest - their shape and flex are both nigh on perfect imo - like no joke perfect. Weigh in at something like 2250 a piece - can't remeber the exact weights from last night. To be honest - I could not be more happy with how they turned out. My BGs might very well be on their way out of the quiver as these seem to be everything i want in a 114mm slayer ski.

so yeah, these are w114s with 18 C&D prettyness attached. No measly birds of prey here - the slaying of kapow requires skulls&bones! The kapow must submit before the mighty w114s!

How would you folks describe the Wren 98s? I only got two days on them last year, with a bad hooky tune, so I don't have much of an idea of how they are. I've got my eye on some other skis I can get good prices on, and thinking about unloading these. I'd like to ski them a few days with a better tune first, but I dunno. What I do know is that the are solid as hell, pretty good at crud busting, have a pretty high top speed, and are weirdly poppy for such a damp ski. Would you call them carve-y, smeary, charge-y, or ??? Where on the mountain do they excel, where do they suck?

Have you detuned them to contact points?

Wren 98 is the best powder skiing ski for a ski that narrow I’ve ever had. But the Wren 108’s are just so good I wasn’t using the 98’s much.

They sound defective. I’ll take them off your hands for cheap and dispose of them properly.

Disappointed to see these so cheap? Was seriously considering selling off my 17/18 W108/189 for an 18/19 W108/184.

My thinkin was (as an EC'r) I could force feed myself the 184 every day where the 189 will stay dry in the quiver more often.

To answer both your questions:

I don't know that it "is" a hooky tune as much as how familiar the factory guys are comfortable with the ski. My W108 turned up hill on it's own for 2+days and the tails cork screwed me more than once at mach schnell with the factory detune. At first I thought I was missing something the ski was offering and couldn't dial in until I surrendered to the gummie and even then it took 4 tries to get the front somewhat dialed. What 2Funk said plus 1cm inboard for me.

I was amazed at how much detune this ski could take and still give a controllable arc in all three phases on 2D snow. I haven't had it on a clear blue icicle yet but, the ski certainly inspires

I would say they're main characteristic is Chargy - ridiculously stable for a ski with no metal in it. Then slarvy or carvy as you see fit. Doing both without being dominant in either ability.

So much so that the now stiffer 18/19 184 (with a smidge more radius) would be easy to stuff in to corners and be more playful mounted +1 and still go like hell.

*If'n anyone thinks this an unrealistic approach - say sompin.

The more I reflect about it, the more I regret selling the K108s. I didnt give them nearly enough time and didnt detune them enough.

I wasnt used to such a quick turning and fun ski, and it honestly surprised/astonished me so much that it threw me off a bit. I got a little scared I think. But they were extremely good skis. Very versatile.

Looking back, they really were a great design for varying my quiver. Quickest and most progressive ski I have ever owned, yet also one of the more substantial. One of a kind feeling.
