They mentioned last Saturday that the temps had not fallen below freezing up high for days.
That Friday and Saturday were the first overnight freezes and if they don't have many more, the pack is likely to be brutally deep and sloshy. Like 8-18" deep.
Plenty of snow still on top but I can see it going away in a whimper.
Also, Beartooth pass and Red lodge are beautiful when it rains. Clouds in and out of the canyon and fewer campers. Quiet and misty is good for partying...
No argument there.
This is kinda a cherry on the top type thing for me, skiing is in the rearview by this time of the year and I gotta be really enticed to make it out. And this:

ain't doin it
Any word on how it's holding up?
Heading home end of the month and would love a few summer turns
Sounds like tomorrow will be Beartooth Basin's last day operating for the year.
Anybody make it up there this past weekend?

Any speculation on operations or lack thereof this season:D
Snotels in the area are 55-70% of average as of today. I have a week penciled off at the end of May, but it doesn't look too promising.
I betcha there's plenty of snow for opening.
Plowing starts in a few weeks and they'll post up some drone footy. Look for those on MTDOT.
Temps between now and then as well as what one expects are big factors yet to be figured in.
It's becoming an old ritual for me to go up. I've had some epic times between Cooke city and Red Lodge.
Met SirVic and Mofro's son up there last year?, had a nice Moose drive by in camp.
I'm in McCall ID now so it'd be a mcchaul
But maybe
There will be skiing one way or another
Always is

Plowing does not start in a few weeks; it has begun.

Last week's action...
I may well go up for opening weekend. Usually a gametime decision these days.
Met up with SirVic and Mofro Jr. last spring.
If I rally it will be 5/30-6/2 or thereabouts. Plans are still pretty up in the air. Unfortunately memorial day weekend is my holiday to work this year so no opening weekend.
No BTB for 2024 [emoji22]

Welp that about does er, wraps er all up...
There will be skiing, just no lift service.
THe may seventh plowing video shows literally nothing but snow. I think there will be skiing.
Beartooth Highway is extremely avalanche prone, as it’s basically switchbacks with couloirs and steeps in between.
Wish there was a way to open it somehow before the traditional Memorial Day weekend start.
Crazy engineering feat. Should be utilized more.

You can access it from the cook/cody side. Lots of great skiing to be had from that gate.

To be honest, I feel like the basin lift service has drawn a new group of skiers up there and it's not awesome.
It used to be pure BC/ hiking style and now there's so many straight up goofs fucking the monkey up top on opening weekend.
The poma parking area used to NEVER be crowded.
57 chevy, Gardiner headwall and Rock creek coolies used to be the main drag. Maybe Reefer ridge when it was in.
Now it's a broken poma party in an area that used to be a free for all zone but now they tell you where you can and can't go.
I guess you can go wherever and just not ride the lift up. Cuz it's a lawless area.
Except Rock creek zone, I don't think any of the switchback slopes ever get skied. And it's typically stable as fuck by late May. Seen a coupla foot dumps that were heavy slough shite skiing though.
that is disappointing. been wanting to do that poma forever with no luck. when i got the time, the snows be scarce... if i gots no time, the snows be plentiful.
someday.
To be fair, my opinion has been based on the last 5 or so years and almost always opening weekend. So it's gonna be a junkshow, always was tbh.
In a fat spring, 2 weeks in on a Tuesday, it could be sick lonely corn skiing on some sweet steeps with a honkin view. I've a kajillion Beartooth stories to motervate yas.
Every soul skier should experience Beartooth Pass/ and the basin poma. That lift is a maneater. The hike-to skiing and hike-out of skiing is so big and stunning.
The lower poma rope may snap on yas at any minute, and the upper poma, you are praying to God that it doesn't.
...and also praying that if the disc snaps off on the rider in front of you, they manage to get out of the way before they collect you.
When I lived out there, I had a lot of days in June that I saw almost no one (and some where I saw exactly zero other people) buzzing up for after-work earned turns.
I will admit to enjoying the opening day circus as well, even if doing so requires embracing the insanity.
I remember going up opening weekend for 12 years or so when I first moved to MT. It was always a shitshow but I remember it like Djongo. The usual spots/headwalls were the places most people hit and I remember lots of freeride camp kids at the poma. I don't even remember too many people dropping 57 Chevy but who knows, I was always pretty stoned. It did start to harsh the vibe when too many folks didn't give the terrain the respect it deserved and started seeing way too many slide for life situations. However just as many rad cornice hucking sessions went down from groms way better than me.
Beartooths will always be rad.
/cool story bro.

The lift served area has never been a shit show for us during the week. Maybe on a weekend, but I've only done weekdays. The place is rad af, and the park kids bring a good vibe. I've not smelled even a single wiff of anti stoke or overcrowding.
Sorry to see they aren't spinning em up this year. The daughter and I had a good run, so glad we pounced on our opportunities to go. This year, she gets to fly to Timberline without me for her June turns.

Sick
Plows made it up to the State line on the 13th and Dunraven pass is already open in the park. That says a lot about the coverage but we don't know what we can't see.
Got a skiff of snow at 6200' here in the Hole last night...
