MAKE TAHOE DEEP AGAIN ~ 2016/17 OFISHUL SNOW/FOOD/WHINE & STOKE THREAD

Kirkwood was great this past Tues and Wed...those wet storms definitely covered the mountain. Had a blast roaming around but highlights were Thunder Saddle (Bogie's slide etc) had cut up pow and All the Way on the Wall was $$$$. Of course, the Fingers were in their early season radical form and the groomers were fast...so fun. However, you will find some firm areas on some of the steeper aspects and on the lower part of the mountain. I also heard they may start winching Zachs and Sentinel soon.

We have only been to Mammy once when everything was open.
(Usually we are doing the Spring Thing).

I remember once starting from top of Dave's, made a wrong turn around Mt Lincoln (?) and ended up at Eagle Lodge (I think). Looking back up to top of Dave's, it looked like a long way away...

You should definitely stay away from Shasta then, WAY too much vert. Sun Valley too.

Everytime I have to ski 5 or 6k continuous vertical, I curse the gods, "Why, Oh why Can't there be a charlift here so I can rest my weary legs!"

You must be confused... I never said a lot of vert was a bad thing but it's not nearly as important as it's made out to be. I'll take Squaw, Alpine or KW over Sun Valley every single time.

Thanks! I didn't realize they could sled south of the highway too. Never see them there. Boring terrain I guess.

What Tahoe Tim said. South of the highway it looks like they are allowed in the LTBMU but not the Carson Ranger District? I thought otherwise. I tour south of the highway often but have only seen them in that zone one day. They were sticking to the LTBMU.

So give them a little spot N of the hwy that starts where the kids play and aims right for Wilderness, and S of the hwy on low elevation, S facing terrain where there won't be much snow? Makes perfect sense.

The area south of the highway in the LTBMU has high elevation sections with lots of snow and is prime cross country skiing terrain.

Yea why give the sledders a small high altitude place they can play, especially when there's no where else for kids and cross country skiers to go.

In other news why did the sun just come out at my place in south lake.

BA said this morning that the storm was splitting Crap

Storm is a bust at the wood. Snowing lightly but new snow is being scraped away.

At least 6 and 10 are open but it's windy on the top.

Not to worry, they'll all be there in the morning.
After my last run, I just left my skis sitting in the snow in front of the gates to hold my spot. Now I can just show up 5 min before opening and get 1st chair. I can do that right? Larry said it was OK.

If anyone thought today was a bust you didn't stay out long enough. 1:30-4pm was sweet, at least on the north/west side of the lake.

Careful on the roads tonight. Just drove my GF's Prius (M&S tires) back from Carson dealership to Galena. She was following in my Tacoma. Lots of people doing stupid shit, like crashing into the walls along the new bridges section. From 395 turn off onto MR Hwy it was sticking on the road, slick. Prius is now home safe where it will remain parked for the duration of the storm. Hopefully things work out for an early morning session at Rose and merry Christmas to all.

sure you parked the right one? That taco is light in the rear, wants to spin around and drive ass first. Prius doesn't have much clearance but is close to 50-50 on the axles. Good luck at Rose and Merry Christmas back!

There's nothing like being ruined by a 6" berm in the Prius when it's snowing out. I can put me ego in check driving it the rest of the time when I'm getting 55 mpg, but that one is tough. Permant loss of man card.

I've driven a RWD Tacoma in the snow for over 15 years. Easy to do if you know how to drive on snow. Only problem is when you get behind someone drive sun 15mph on the uphill over Carson Pass and you decided not to put chains on because the roads did not really require it. It is fine, unless you stop on an icy uphill.

Glad to see the fresh snow. Hope to play in it Monday and later next week.

Caught yesterday afternoon at Heavenly. Freakin Spooner was a dodge ball demo derby coming back. We were kind of amazed to have had so many close calls. The season in Tahoe has arrived!

Best day of the season so far at Squaw... it will even be worth all of the shit my wife is going to give me for chasing this storm right before Christmas.

On the Squaw food & drink note...

- The Mtn Roots truck parked near the Funi has tasty breakfast tacos... 2 for $6 and worth every penny.

- Skip Starbucks and show some local support by heading over to the Slot Bar where Ralph Backstrom is serving up a couple of coffee roasts (had the dark roast and it was really good).

Kirkwood ruled today. For a saturday; no one there. Damn good day. Lifts fired right on schedule too.

Christmas family duties called me away from the slopes today. I did go XC skiing in my PJ's early this morning.

Through some sand bags in the back of your Taco and it does great in the snow.

Quite a few wrecks on 88 between Silver Lake and Cook's on the way home last night ( I get off 88 right below Cooks) Take it easy out there.

You all can thank me for this storm. I did my duty by leaving town for 2 weeks.
