Gave my newspaper carrier a $100 goodbye tip because he lost his job. Paper is no longer printed every day, and on the three days it is printed, it is delivered by mail. Dude never missed a morning in many years of service.
Sucks. I miss having a paper paper to read with my coffee.

Delivery only or delivery plus install? I gave the guys who wrestled my washer into a very tight spot, leveled it the best anyone could, and hooked it up $10 each. That was probably on the lame side. The sleep number installers who barely spoke English and seemed a little intimidated to be this far from Boston and out in the sticks got $40 each and a few glasses of water each. I'm only two miles from I-89 and almost within sight, but still it's VT. We have banjos. It was brutally hot and they actually asked for the water, they didn't have any.Quote:

Got a replacement on warranty on an almost brand new (2 month old) GE side by side refrigerator after a massive and infuriating 50 day clusterfuck of a warranty claim. So on delivery day the delivery contractor keeps me waiting until 3 pm but what the hell that’s how it works. They pull up and I’m expecting a couple of pros. Instead the driver gets out, reasonably beefy young kid, greets me and after a minute his partner gets out and he’s about 5’ 4” and couldn’t weigh 130 lbs if he filled his pockets with rocks. Now I’m thinking looks aren’t everything (fuck I’d still be single if they were) but in addition to being a featherweight he clearly doesn’t have a clue as to how to do the job.
So the young driver is coaching him through how to put the lifting rig on and how to position himself etc. The door nearest the kitchen is 100 ft from where the truck is parked and there are three wide steps up to the deck and one more through the door and then twenty feet to the spot where the unit goes. In other words not a tough job.
They get the malfunctioning fridge goes out ok but the skinny kid is starting to fade and starts making excuses about just being back after sick leave for an injury (so now I have to hear his whole life’s story but I’m desperate to get a working refrigerator into my fucking kitchen so what the hell.)
Old one out new one lowered to the ground and skinny kid can barely get it airborne. They get to the step with the rig on and it’s no go. Kid can’t straighten up with rig on, simply doesn’t have the leg strength. He starts having a melt down, I mean a crying melt down. He goes back to the truck to collect himself. I’m totally fucking flabbergasted. I’d have been raging pissed off it it wasn’t so sad. So I complement the the burly kid on his patience but suggest he get a new partner as soon as he can, because this jokers going to be a serious drag on his career in appliance logistics. And I also tell him my senior citizen ass is going to help him get it in because there is no way they’re getting off my property without getting that thing in my house and properly fired up.
So I help them hump it in the door with minimal damage to the paint and floors and it thank God works correctly and after two fucking hours I bid them good bye. And despite the fact that they loitered expectantly for about 30 seconds - no they did not get a mother fucking tip!
^^ fridges arent THAT heavy. a couple hundred pounds at most, and those lifting straps make it really easy to move big heavy shit around easily.
I dont tip trades people or appliance delivery folks. But i do offer them canned energy drinks (that i get for free from a rep, despite not liking them). Everyone appreciates a pickmeup, and with alcoholism/drug addiction being common i find that caffeine is a safe offer.
