I'm going with this hopeful thinking for now and my brain wants to believe, so thanks. It was a sudden lurch off full throttle into a huge subzero headwind. I need to watch youtubes on replacing and figure that out anyway. So drive and forget for now and see if it repeats.

It didn't reset right away with key on and off. It took fueling it, which was a couple three minutes.

I don't really want to go IS20. Manual and not interested in upgrading the clutch. Plenty of power for me. I do need it to be reliable for frequent road trips.

Has anyone had issues with the entertainment system? My system now crashes every ~10minutes - screen goes black, no audio, etc. - and then has to do a full restart. Did a little googling but haven't found much.

For those of you with Alltracks, would you buy one again? I have been watching them for a few months now as my next car. For context, I've had a '14 Jetta for years and really like how it drives, but want something with AWD that doesn't need 93 octane. It seems like the Alltrack is one of the only options for a non-SUV with AWD that takes regular gas. Any long term reviews out there?

I’d buy ours again. 2017 SE 6MT with 67k. Some headaches but it’s been enjoyable and a champ most of the time. All three of my Subarus had annoying issues too and were not that great to drive.

I’m sure a big repair is coming our way sooner than later, but it’s been great for DD and road trips for an active family of four

2017 6 MT with 45k miles, would definitely buy again.

Not an Alltrack, but a 15 TDI wagon with 140k km. I'm in the middle of a 1400 km road trip and would buy it again.

It's had a few issues, some TDI specific, but overall it's not given us much trouble.

90k ish on my 18S manual. Has had the water pump replaced under warranty. Still smells like antifreeze after short drives. Goes away when fully warm. Uses a few drops and needs a top up after 6 months or so.

My turbo quit on a road trip about 5k ago and lit up the dash lights. Reset itself and has run perfect since. Turbo wastegate failures are common and require a new Turbo usually. Cheap DYI. Moderate a indy. Expensive at dealer.

Rear diffs can also fail and they are expensive so it requires a junk yard replacement unless you have warranty.

Sunroofs are notorious leakers. Get an S unless you really want features.

If you want to tune get the DSG or plan on an upgraded clutch at the same time. A few pulls with the IS20 and a tune will wreck the stock clutch.

My Alltrack is by far the nicest driving car I have ever owned. I just wish it was a Toyota. But I'm glad I brought it new and up till now it has been a good move (22,250 with 6/72 now expired warranty). No way they are worth the premium people had been paying. I think prices are better now. Don't pay a premium because it is just a shitty VW and then you might be good, depending on your luck. You own a VW so you know this already.

Seems like the going rate is around $20k for cars with 60k miles these days. I'm going to keep an eye out for a clean one and hope the turbo in my Jetta 1.8 doesn't blow up in the meantime haha

Yup. Mostly problem free 17 S DSG approaching 120k miles. Coming up on big service combo (40k & 60k @ same time).

'18 S with 58k, would definitely buy again if they still sold them in the US. Would actually love an Alltrack GT with the 2.0 liter and GTi trim.

17 S coming up on 80k. Highly recommend the apr tune if you have the DSG. No need to spring for the bigger turbo unless you're really trying to go really fast.

Blown turbo 100% covered (huge), a few other minor things I don't remember. Would 100000% would buy and tune again.

Yeah, or a Skoda Octavia RS wagon . . . also running an APR Stage 1 upgrade since week 2, more fun and better mileage to boot.

2019 S with only 25K but suck a pleasure to drive on road trips No issue s except the ignition switch recall and a few resets on apple car play

Somehow deleted my post. ‘17 S w/ 80k and, knock on wood, no major issues yet. Bought CPO w/ 30k in May ‘20. Current prices are insane - same car locally for sale for $3k more than I paid with double the miles.

Anyone use the factory crossbars? Read reports of them being quite noisy and less fuel efficient than say Thule Aeroblade.

They'll sell you a regular octane tune too. Still a pretty decent boost, although it is probably worth it to just run premium--increased efficiency can make up for some of the extra cost (although you give that efficiency up if the tune causes you to do a lot more spirited driving!)


I think it is time to do it to my GTI. The 6-year warranty is still in place, but I think if something was going to happen, it would have happened by now...Most of the tuners offer a low torque map for the GTI so I could put off replacing the weak OEM clutch until it is a little closer to end of life.

Get Whispbars.

You gotta order them from Australia because once Yakima took over, they stopped selling in the US, but they are the best. Support T-track hardware (which gives you a cleaner look than using clamps) without having to futz around with cutting the rubber strips to fit the gaps, aero low-noise design, good stuff.

Pricing is pretty good after exchange rate from AUD. That's less than $250, so even if they charge you a ton for shipping, you come out ahead vs Thule or Yakima domestic options.

You can also get the "flushbar" versions that don't extend past the support tower, or the super low profile railbar, but that limits how you can locate things on the rack and cuts down the space considerably. Bars should also be available in black.

No issues with factory crossbars. Maybe Thule are quieter, but factory was cheaper. I suspect they were made by Thule too.

Problem with the 2.0 TSI 245hp version is its FWD. Only the 200 hp diesel is haldex equipped for the RS version, which is lowered too, so might not be optimal. You can get the Octavia in Scout (Alltrack) version, which sits a bit higher and has the option of petrol 2.0 190hp (Budack cycle) or 2.0 TDI 200hp (same as the RS) with haldex.
The Superb (Passat) comes with the 2.0 280 hp, haldex and the higher sitting Scout version though, my weapon of choice:
