I know this is the "...mount your own bindings..." thread - but there's a LOT of really sweet stuff at Ace. Have them cut plexi for your wax scrapers (if you're not already using metal ones, that is.) Or a #20 bit, because you can't find your 4.1mm bit. (It's way closer to the right size than 5/32 - and it's also at my local Ace.

Mounted my skis foe the first time the other day. I don’t think I fucked it, since I’ve raged on them in bounds and out a couple times. Thanks for motivating all you lovely, and not, creatures.

I did buy a binding freedom jigarex after my construction worker friend said I sucked at drilling straight. 🤷🏼♂️

Alright. My screw didn’t set all the way, it’s epoxy’d in, went charging on it a few times in the resort and it seems to be okay... or it got worse? I didn’t notice it until today [emoji51]

You may not notice slightly off center holes with a traditional mount, whereas with inserts, you will. They're more demanding of precise location.

It's probably inconsequential with alpine binders, but with tech binders (and aligning the toe for heel pin alignment), I'd pay close attention to this.

Drilling into existing holes (with volcanos) is an opportunity for drill bit wander. Flatten the volcanos and countersink again.

Depending on the binding's mounting hole diameter, I've used the actual binding as a drilling guide to drill the large insert hole - with the large insert bit (after drilling the first hole the "normal" way).

If the base plate holes are smaller than the 5/16" bit, you can always size down slightly and (removing the binding) drill to the final size.

it looks to me like there is slop between ski and binding which might be ok or might cause a breakage

I would use some heat to loosen the epoxy and try to get the slop out of that mount, its possible the screws were captured in the plastic of the baseplate out of the box which may have messed up the snugging down process so enlarging the hole in the plastic would fix that

edit: I got a few sets of those bindings, IME running the little screw( vertical retension) 1 mark > the bigger screw( horizontal retension) will help with the pre-mature ejaculation if you didnt already know

It's also possible that you didn't drill that one deep enough. Measure and be sure before drilling any deeper though.

Finally a touring ski that feels like a real ski....

I think it’s a deep enough hole but I’ll double check that. I guess I finally have enough reasons to buy a hair dryer? Or heat up the screw with a soldering iron?

Assuming hole is deep enough, do I still need to redrill to get the epoxy out and put in a new screw with new epoxy? Ideally I only have to remove the one screw and can leave the binding on.

That’s also assuming it needs to remedied. Seems sketchy to me. The screw seems secure but I haven’t tried wrench on it much yet.

Too get the epoxy loose you might need 20secs with a good soldering iron OR mount a 1/4 " drill bit BACKWARDS so you got the smooth end of the bit sticking out, run the bit at high speed against the screw which will generate enough friction to heat up the screw and melt the epoxy

if you do buy a soldering iron look for 100W which is also good for melting pure ptex into coreshots, lesser iron won't have enough heat IME

if you used a drill stop or collar i would assume the hole is the right depth things just didnt set down right

I would get the screw out and run it back in to see if you can suck that binding plate down, if you can then just remount with more epoxy

if it isnt deep enough you have to drill deeper, poke something in the hole to measure how deep you drilled it but i kind of doubt that

edit : and good luck with the semen retention er i mean boot retention ... yeah thats what i mean

Haven’t field tested it yet, but I borrowed a saudering gun from a neighbor, worked like a charm. Hole was deep enough by check with a twist tie. Clamped the ski/binding down to my workbench to make sure it was flush, fresh epoxy and boom! The screw felt very solid going back in. Took less than 5 minutes.

Another HUGE thanks to the guys that make us the paper templates. Just one request, please put on the measurement graph horizontally across the template to help us center it. I spent at least an hour yesterday measuring 50 times to be sure I was mounting down the center line. The finished project. Can't wait to let them rip this week, if I remember how to do a turn. :redface:
