Electric Bike Thread

As best I can tell, the venn diagram of Surron owners and people who are massive douchebags is basically just one circle.

Responsible people who want a dirt bike just buy a dirt bike - a Surron is still undergunned for any real riding. And responsible people who want an e-commuter or an e-mtb don't buy a Surron because they're not allowed most places, and they're not what most people think of when they want an e-bike. So that means the main customers for those things are people who want to ride dirt bikes in places where dirt bikes aren't allowed, and are douchey enough to not give a fuck about anyone else that might be in those places.

Oh man, there was a hilarious recent Facebook group million comment drama post in my local city MTB group from a Sur Ron owner in massive denial on two things,
One, that the illegality of using his ride of choice on local trails was in fact, not “a discrimination issue,” and
Two, that he was not a major asshole about it!

I asked shop bro about those E-bikes with the hub motor and throttle made out of chinesium and

he said " they are illegal in Canada so we don't sell Them "

of course they are all over town and its really easy to order one from Amazon

Some ways back in this thread someone posted a video of some tool arguing that if you put the pedal kit on it the motor is limited to 1000w in pedal-assist mode which makes it legal anywhere Class 1 ebikes are legal. Brilliant!

750w is the max peak output for ebikes class 1,2 &3... although some areas may limit it to 500w for class 1. If the bike either has a throttle or electrically assists over 20kph, it is no longer a class 1.

Surron I rode one around a parking lot. It made me grin. I thought about getting one since I can ride to two dirtbike trail networks from my house, so no need to get a hitch mount carrier and no need to learn moto shifting. But that budget is going to a much less capable but more broadly usable light ebike. Can only have so many hobbies.

I havent noticed any loopholes, you can do all kinds of things and claim its legal which is not a problem until johnny law writes you 600 $ worht of tickets

in BC you need to be under 500 W to qualify as class 1, class 2 and 3 are motor vehicals and every province is different

500 tends to be the cutoff for class 1

Last night I was helping my oldest put a new transmission into his four runner. Like most projects around here, it took hours longer than it should have, and we finished around 4am. A group of 12 -15 year old boys were cruising the neighborhood on these around 3am. So what kind of parent does this? The same kind that trusts their under age teen boy out at 3am with a pack of other boys. “They’re good kids. They won’t do anything inappropriate!”

I pity my kids. I know they would get in trouble, so they don’t get the chance.

AXS for emtb... must have or meh?

I'd rather have 11 speed on the ebike. More durable, and I don't really need the range of 12 speed. I've yet to find something that I can't get up with a 42t on the ebike that I'd be able to get up with a 52t.

I mean... the builds are GX, GX AXS, or GX/X0 AXS Transmission.... thems my choices unless I go buying a whole Shimano drivetrain and sell whatever is on the bike.

I'd pick based on other components than the drivetrain. I care more about good wheels and suspension than shifty bits, especially on an ebike.

Yes, I agree...

Personally I really love Shimano 12 speed a whole heck of a lot (need an XT shifter but otherwise, whatever level component is fine). But everyone (that I'm looking at) is putting fucking SRAM drivetrains on so I don't have a choice unless I buy my own Shimano, swap and sell.

One thing I did notice is that Transmission solves my biggest SRAM gripe: the huge gap between the biggest gears has been tightened up like Shimano offering usable shifts instead Eagle's 11 speed + a bailout gear.

Eagle: 32-36-42-52
Shimano: 33-39-45-51
Transmission: 32-38-44-52

I have an efat bike, 30/46t with Yamaha PW. The few times that I actually ride it after the snow melts, I have maxed it out. ATV impossible, 6psi/4.8". It doesn't trip off but doesn't have enough juice and cadence is to slow at like 2mph or whatever. Feel like I could clear inhuman electric assist supper steep stuff with 28/51t. It's the only ebike I have ever ridden, no clue if FS might do better if it hade the traction.

The specifics of gearing matter a lot less on an ebike. You've got a motor. Pushing a gear that's slightly too hard isn't nearly as taxing as it is on a regular bike.

I had been worried about Sram's cheapest NX on my Bullit but its still fine at 3000 kms going into season 3 , it shifts as well as the XT I had on the previous Yeti which i really did like

even the original NX chain seemed pretty good but I replaced it last year with an x01, I'm just ordering chain #3 and when the rear cluster goes I'll just thro on another NX,

Like toast sez when you got all that power you don't really have to worry about those must-make shifts in fact i usually roll off the pedaling to give the drive train a break

I recently read something about half the stuff SRAM was shipping was going on E-bikes

You know I thot it would eat chain and sprockets but it has not been the case for me, I changed/upgraded the NX chain to X01 after about 1200kms but it was still < .75 on the checker and now at 3000 kms that X01 chain is still under .75

but I would agree you don't need expensive drivetrains and my average speed for 3000 kms has been < 13kph so I do a lot of shifts at low speed

you do get a hell of a clunk on a full power shift if you don't back off

Does anyone know for sure if Deore or SLX cassettes have proven to be any more durable than XT, or for that matter, Deore or SLX chains vs. XT or XTR?
It’s pretty well established that the pricier Sram stuff tends to last longer than cheaper Sram stuff.
