Anyone have anything they'd like to rant about?

I have mixed opinions about that crash video.
First one is that while he did act to immobilize the youth and direct the other person to block and close the jump - which is great, exactly what I was taught in WFA, protect scene safety first, second activate spinal precautions in a high mechanism of injury that could have involved spinal injury - I’m not sure if immediate helmet removal was warranted and I’m curious what any WFR/W-EMT instructors have to say about this. The youth was talking, so airway and breathing are no longer a concern. If you are going to go through the trouble of immobilizing the patient, I would think trying to remove the helmet by yourself could pose an increased risk of exacerbating a potential spinal injury without improving the odds of clearing any circulatory/bleeding issues? I was trained that Circulatory takes priority over disability, but I’m just not sure if removing the helmet is necessary to do so? Again, paging the W-EMT/WFR crowd here??? My thinking is if you are concerned enough to immobilize the subject then you call for resort first aid and wait for them to clear the subject while you look for any signs of bleeding, and keep the kid talking.

Regarding the crash, I have mixed opinions as well, in that I agree that the GoPro makes it obvious that there was a second kid, but maybe when zooming along it’s not obvious and the guy knows not to brake check if he has already avoided the first kid. I could go either way on that call to not brake check and just go around the first kid.

My shop once accidentally boxed and shipped the wrong bike to Norway. I don’t know the details, but I remember hearing it turned out cheaper to reimburse everyone involved than pay for 2 more shipments between the US and Norway.

He saw slow moving riders and didn’t do anything at all to mitigate the risk, just full steam ahead. It was totally avoidable.

I’ve got a rant about that video: Snowshoe spent most of last summer extending that jump line (Big Ash). And did almost no other trail work on the mountain.
Maybe I’d be less grouchy if I was doing the jump line. But a lot of it is doubles instead of tables, and I don’t want to be punished for lack of youthful commitment.
In reality, they have little incentive to do improvements when lift lines are routinely 45 min deep. I guess that’s another rant.
And that guy is a douche.

That’s a view but from when he landed and was hauling ass. I suppose he could have locked up the brakes but that’s a dicey move coming into the next jump. Maybe he could have done more but I can see trying to thread through as a response in panic mode idk. I do wonder if they had any idea if riders were on the line in front of them

A "dicey" move to lock em up? Do you ride? If one's not capable of doing so they shouldn't be riding that line.

The reason he didn't stop before the jump isn't because he couldn't. It's because he didn't want to waste his run, because he has to wait in a 45 minute lift line to do it again.

Proof? The guy he was towing in was far closer to him than he was to the kids. He managed to stop in plenty of time.

Lots of armchair riding here making decisions on what was possible. As I viewed it, he couldn’t see the kids until he was in the air and then had basically one transition to bail /stop before he was in the air again and on the kid. Would you have the same verdict if it was not kids and just some rando gapers instead? Two of the kids seemed to know they were going to slow and were staying to the side intentionally. Looks like an accident here. Not worth getting worked up about

I tried to watch it frame by frame on Youtube ('.' key steps you forward one frame) and noticed that every 5th frame is a repeat of the 4th frame.

That means this dude is recording in 24fps, and then running it through some software that converts it to 30fps by adding an extra frame...even though Youtube can support native 24fps content.

Seems like if you're going to be a MTB youtuber, the bare minimum (after not filming yourself hitting kids) is to get your camera settings and video workflow dialed in so your footage doesn't look goofy.

Ill say it again, riding large doubles at speed with short transitions between jumps can result in really bad things if you grab brakes at the wrong time. Combined with the GoPro effect of slowing things down, widening views and making things seem less gnarly im hesitant to say the guy could have stopped/slowed safely. that said, it sounds like he has a history of being an asshole, and apparently saw the kids and warned them the jump before, so yeah, fuck him.

The above video, i again played without sound. Whats the problem with that one? If someone is riding slow ahead of you i dont see the problem with shouting ahead "mind if i get by?" and then passing. Im guessing he instead said something like "get the fuck outta the way!"?

it should have been very easy to stop in that situation. He should have been on the brakes as soon as he started yelling. I’ve had to do the same thing for kids many, many times. Guy prioritized his line over safety. I’d bet rider is a douche off the bike too, with thinking like that.



Another rant..Shimano discontinued the Zee lineup. Now the only affordable dh groupset is GX. Hoping Shimano has something else affordable coming down the pipeline, but I doubt it. DH is becoming a dentists sport

Did you go for opening weekend? I was planning on it, but was talked out of it due to crowds. I've had decent luck on Thursdays and Friday mornings, so I've got a bunch of Thursdays blocked out this summer for day trips.

Guy in the vid is a douche. There's plenty of room to slow down or even stop between those jumps. Putting others at risk for a vid is shitty.

You could hear the kids down trail at the beginning of the video. You could SEE them on the jump while in the air from the jump before. Dude clearly is not a first responder. If he's worried about c-spine, well, he screwed that pooch. Removing the helmet is no worries - if c-spine is immobilized by another person and you have a free set of hands or two. That's standard protocol. Definitely gotta go to skin to win - i.e., expose the potentially injured area. But yeah, immoblize the neck, even if just with hands, if concerned about spinal. Ask if they hit themselves, anything hurt, palpate the spine. THEN, remove the helmet.

He’s riding like it’s a a closed course, but it’s not a fucking closed course.

It’s your responsibility to ride in a manner in which you can avoid other riders.

He was absolutely not doing that. That makes him the (ir)responsible asshole here.

Sorry if slowing down would have messed up your PR attempt, or your YouTube shoot, but it’s not a choice.

Gopro effect is definitely a thing but those jumps aren't that big. Stopping should have been no problem, or at the very least getting on the brakes and bypassing the next jump. Dude is a scrub.

We went up Sunday. No crowds, but we never ride Basin side anymore, so I can’t speak to the real bottleneck. Guessing next weekend will feel more like the opening weekend rush.
