Rose inbounds today (in case that helps): heavy, dense, Sierra cement glop. Great base-building snow. High snow levels; probably around 7500' on the Reno side.
The small pockets of untracked were very heavy. In the deeper spots it was almost like breakable crust, in terms of how hard it was to turn in.
Tamarack ski resort is apparently safe and open for business. It's in that "well, it's moderate and a hundred people have skied it" so I guess it's good. There's some good dense pow up there. That's probably why everyone from Tahoe,Truckee, and Reno were there today. I just ran up to Tamarack and dug a pit on a north face just off the ridge and went back to the car as I had things to do. I'm actually tired. Funny how tired I get on such a small tour for my first day out. Hourglass was hammered by 9am. There's still facets on the ground. I'm not an expert and don't know why shit doesn't slide but I'm guessing it's just that everything is pretty anchored in most spots along with SAC talking about the moisture making down and helping bond the facets. I dug a pit and did 2 ect tests. The first column had some roots in it and I couldn't get it to fail. The next column was sittting on clean dirt and collapsed/failed on the 12th tap. I'm hoping the models keep the same or get better regarding next Thursday's potential system....and some cold air to go with it.
According to Facebook Squaw is going to save Sibo and Shirley for Saturday... which would piss me off but I'm in Mammoth right now and won't be in Tahoe until Friday night anyway, so that works.
Am I really considering Sugar Bowl Saturday morning? Alone? Yes, its been awhile.
Sounds fun to me.
you could also tour at carson but it would just be edges scraping on rocks there's no snow there
Is there some sarcasm lurking there pd?
I am,gonna try to ski tomoro but nothin but blue groomers
If that goes well I,was hoping to go,for a walk this weekend ....... Unless ........
U skiing pain free???
Holy shit. A STFUYFM appearance. Awesome. Haven't seen that alias in a while. And excellent usage. Not like Tamarack is a secret and isn't one of the most popular BC areas around the Basin.
666, you saw the lift schedule right? Gondy+Nob Hill+Lincoln. I was originally planning for Sunday but with limited days with younguns I may wait a week for more ops.
Also good to read gimpy back on skis.
definitely not pain free. and somewhat limited still. the heavy wet conditions aren't awesome for knees anyway. but its a good place for a walk.

Thanks guys (BGNight especially for the intel). I don't post much these days, and was obviously turned off initially by Smurf......but you have all renewed my faith in TGR. :)
Maybe I will even post a TR, because I am that old school.......or is that not allowed here either? :)
Leaving office........could barely sleep last night......meadow skipping and you would think it was some epic day. Actually skiing in Tahoe.......pinch me!
Shirley early season is fun mini golf!
Stoked.
Don't go tour at rose there is a potential for avis and it got skied out quicker than squaw. I heard someone even dug pit and make cracky. But if you do go out make sure to ski fast and take lots of pictures in the direct slide path. Attachment 161110
The ski area formerly known as Squaw has a pretty sweet new live HD pano: http://squawalpine.roundshot.ch/squaw I guess that's our trade-off for delaying Alpine's opening until....
^^^ That's pretty sweet. I was just about to saw that Upper Mountain coverage looks surprisingly solid from the standard cams, but that gives an even better idea.
Edit: You can click the cam link in the Squaw pano to Alpine's. High-T looks good to go right now.
Kirkwood tomorrow morning! Time for a 1 day mission from SF. If you see a guy with orange pants, a black jacket and old iggy FFFs, say hi.
^but coop was pretty clear about the no beginners thing
^^the no beginner thing was strange...although last year had to be a record number of visitors taking the lift back down on 6 & 10. Was all set to take one of the littles to N*...looks like a shorter drive to the wood instead.
Doggie training day.
Maynard's first official backcountry day:

Have you ever been to KW??? It is all freaking gnar! No beginners everz. Honestly, there is enough challenge off 5 in low tide to freak out a never ever. Especially when you are getting flybys on the last 300' were it was mostly rain the past few days.
Conditions are perfect on snow. Conditions at home have me up next Saturday with just me and my son. Might be able to take a lap or two solo. Maybe a few hours, but only if KW lifts its ban on beginners and open lessons. I mean, he is allowed, as he has two seasons under his belt. No beginner.
I just figured out what Fair Wages needs to do. Get a day care certification. And have an on hill day care. Not really lessons, then. Vail will love it.
Yeah, so as long as the pass is not closed next Friday afternoon, we will be sledding by 4PM.
Hopefully having a few days to play around for real around the 20th-23rd. Conditions permitting.
i will be @ SugarBowl first thing tomorrow morning, but sadly doing some coach training. i'll be out clinicing in the afternoon....
my daughters will be ripping around in the morningfor their first turns of the season with the SugarBowl Ski Team. rumor has it, their picture is also on the official SugarBowl trail map... right below Daron Rhalves....
definitely eager to slid'em around!
Curious to see if SB even opens - based on the cams Nob Hill and Christmas tree don't appear skiable, and while upper Lincoln is probably OK I doubt that lower Lincoln is.
^^^ Made my weekend plans on those views.
Though the latest SAC observations from areas other than Tamarack have me intrigued.
Brooks, that looks like a cool dog.
Another new guy trying to be a big shot.
Cinders & me and the BayAreaSkiBus are heading to Heavenly tomorrow.
Woulda liked to go to KW, but figure it'll be crazy busy...
Holla if you know our steeze!

That's what I'm hoping for tomorrow... same for Emigrant... and hoping it doesn't rain up top tonight and ruin all the snow they've been saving. I already put a core shot or two in my skis at Mammoth this morning (no regrets whatsoever after the last few years) so I might as well get my money's worth before I get them fixed up. Anyone else going to be at Squaw? White helmet / grey-ish Flylow jacket / blue pants.
Stopped by the Polaris resort today, ahead of the weekend crowds, and enjoyed a solidly good first day. Steady flow of peeps, 3 lifts running upper mountain, quite a bit of open terrain. Pretty fun, softish cornlike snow on Pluto along with unfrozen cement in the trees (I'm counting it as pow). Pinball terrain park was all corn, very nice. A few spots down low wearing thin at end of day, easily avoided with no damage. Racked up 13 epic pins, including Brown Bragging. :fm:
A few bands of heavy rain in Sac. Will not be at KW tomorrow, have fun!
Wait, what? Not gonna be at KW? Are you fuggin kidding me? They gonna get 5 spinning dude with access to 4 runs. You are totally missing out. Why ski above the snow line dude? I mean their FB page is exploding with stoke. The meter is broke.
Ah, I'm just pissed they are now charging nearly $160 for a kids ski lesson this year. Goddamn thieves. Anyone know of a babysitter who would like to hang with my kid on hill this winter? Not looking for a lesson, but someone responsible, fun and who willing to give a pointer now an again.
