Those other beers thread

Popped open a couple old home brews recently. The one on New years eve was a mystery bottle as I didn't label what was in it. It was a very nice, smooth bourbon porter that I did as an extract kit in 2011 or 12.

Second one was from the first all grain brew I did. Went over to a friend's and we each did the same imperial porter recipe. I used bourbon, he used rum. His was undrinkable at first. Fortunately he didn't throw any away, it became good after 6 months and awesome after a year of aging. Mine was decent at first, good after a year, but has not aged so well since. Another 2012 brew.

Need to get back into homebrewing! Ignore the label, I always bottled using empties I'd consumed.

I picked up a four pack of 500 ml cans of Dry Hop'd Zwickl, a collaboration between Bitburger and Deschutes at Costco last week. Pretty tasty "lawnmower beer" and the price is right at under $6.

This stuff is good.

I guess dark beers like porters and stouts are an aquired taste that I haven’t developed, although I’ve tried many times. Whenever I hear “porter”, I can’t help thinking about that part in James Joyce’s Ulysses where some drunk character (Bloom maybe?) relieves himself into a bucket of porter that was set out in the street for workmen who were working on a job there. The implication being he thought it looked like a comfort station.

I like Yuengling and Shiner Bock, but that’s about as dark as I’ll go.

Neither are available where I live unless you find a one off in some specialty store.

Shiner is sickly sweet. I tried to like it on a work trip to Austin. By the end of the week I couldn't get through a whole one.

Yuengling I've tried once. It was drinkable. Their pronounced anti union stance left a bitter taste. Sure, lots of businesses are anti union. I'm not going to go out of my way to find it.

My niece got a job with this beer company. What's the collective take on Lindemans? Beer for people who don't like beer? I've never tried the brew.

ETA: Their ‘Cuvée Rene’ Geuze is pretty good

they mostly move fruit lambics, which aren’t what beer people like, irrespective of brewer. The framboise and Kriek are most seen.

I found this in Atlantic Superstore in Saint John, New Brunswick. It was on the sickly sweet side and therefore slightly disappointing. I like normal Paulaner. And I've had some good 0 beer in Germany. Oh well.

That is disappointing. Paulaner is my favorite beer ever, sad to see they can’t leverage their brewing skill into the 0 market. Tamarack’s Oktober Fest featured Paulaner Export this year though and it was glorious!

It's worth trying at least once. Because Paulaner. YMMV. While the taste is of course different, it reminded me of the lingering sweet taste you get with Shiner Bock. I can't drink more than two of the latter. And while I like various Paulaner products, I am more of an Erdinger fan, if we're talking about mass breweries of Bavaria. I did however enjoy the Paulaner restaurant and bar at the Frankfurt Flughaffen, a few floors up from the ICE platforms on one extended trip where I had to spend a night at or near the airport twice at different times.

Seems like it's almost getting difficult to find something in stores these days that isn't IPA. So given the season couldn't resist the pumpkin beer variety pack. First one wasn't bad.

Check out Clausthaler extra herb for a nice Pilsner and naturtrüb for something in the direction of a pale ale. I quit with the real stuff over a year ago but still drink a lot of beer. I found the helles just to damn sweet when they are NA

Ya, I just have to find them over here on my side of the pond. I scour every place I come across. There's a Jolley store in Enosburg that had the Erdinger Weißbeer I posted above. Erdinger is one of my favorite mass producers. I haven't been back to Enosburg and none of the other Jolley stores have had it. I occasionally drink real beer. I am trying every NA and 0 beer I come accross because I don't drink alcohol very often, it usually makes me feel awful after one, and I'm my wife's designated driver. ;)

Score! Hadn't seen this in ages, it's one of my favorite beers. Now in cans. There's a barrel aged version called Older Viscosity that is on a whole nother level. Need to see if I can track that one down next.
