harpo - all you do is cut or grind down the square knob. Some discussion in future boots about making it easier to get that outer tongue on and off. Dynafit wanted that square knob in there so that people would know where to put the tongue - helps with the learning curve. But it seems they're willing to listen to input that the tongue removal is a PITA
For those that have skied both the TLT5 & Mercury/Vulcan - is the Mercury tongue insertion much more difficult than the TLT 5? Swapping the TLT5 tongue in&out is mindlessly easy, does the extra buckle and/or stiffness make it harder on the Mercury, or is it something else?Quote:

First run out in deep dry powder and get to the bottom only when switching back to tour to realize the main tour buckle is broken. Not completely but one of the arms near the boot on the small section of metal before the hinge. Managed to rig it up with a zap strap, some hockey tape and a long voile strap. Skied 2 days in the backcountry like that. Toured and skied normally. Today the buckle sheared right off. I was still able to get the buckle to engage in ski mode and held it in place with the voile strap but it is more difficult and I'm not sure if it will work every time.
Seems like this double hinge has been over engineered. And with rivets it is not going to be an easy fix. Especially as I'm not anywhere close to a respectable dealer.
What really sucks is that I just sent back my Garmont Cosmos for the faulty tech fittings. Thought I was over my boot issues and these things break first run! Maybe try the Maestrale now.

^^^ that sux. I hope it was just a bad magnesium batch. Fwiw the TLT5P had issues with longevity with rivets but not buckles so i hope it was an isolated problem as i have some mercurys to try out too
^^^^ I'm not surprised... I haven't had the same issue on my vulcan's yet but there is a hell of a lot of force on that buckle when closing it.
I've been worried about it and found via experiment that if I press forward against the tongues when closing the buckle, it closed with much less force required.
At the beginning I just forced the buckle closed( with quite a bit of force) when my ankle wasn't at the correct lean angle and everything lined up.
Pressing forward really helps.
Bummer..i'm sure they will warranty/repair them.
The issue on my boots is that one of the instep buckles doesn't close tight against the shell like the one on my other foot. It closes but is still pretty much protruding from the shell. Not causing a problem but there is no damage to it and it seems to be a manufacturing problem.
Still loving them.....digging the stiffness...skied them without tongues and couldn't see the point...control was manageable but not as good.
If you want less stiffness..buy a different boot.. I think the stiffness is as advertised...fucking burly and that's what I wanted.
Fuck...so this would be breakage #2 i've heard about now. The other breakage was the same buckle shearing. The only difference is it was on the Vulcan. Heard the person just ended up getting new shells. Guess i'll start using the lean forward method on it just incase and I sure as shit hope mine doesn't break as i'd hate to have my shells replaced given the bootfitting involved.
so as it turns out I went pretty sporty on the shell size and there was no way the stock dynafit liner would work, the length/toe room was good but there was pressure on top of the foot so after a couple of attempts to rice mold I tried my conform'able liners (much like an intuition)/sole foot bed from my old boots and I now have a very comfy fit probably the best I have ever had in a ski boot SO the shell would seem to be the right size but I couldn't get it to work with the stock liner cuz stock liners and me never work, 3 times I have had to shell out the extra for thermofits SO I shouldn't be that suprised but figuring that out yesterday suckedQuote:

they ski down pretty well I only did 2 runs but I can tell they are gona work, my liners are 6yrs old so a new stiffer intuition liner would make them better for the down but that was my doing, I would say any mercury buyer should be prepared to shell out for intuitions

Al - i don't get it. Your shell size is a bit big or a bit small?
You can get different Intuition volume sizes. If it's a bit small try getting the low volume liner. Then cook it for more comfort. That will work fine except for the super cold days.
I'm going to try Pro-tour liners in mine. There's so much ROM it makes sense to do that. Plus to me the liner doesn't need to be stiff as the boot's so stiff. Right now I've got Luxurys and Dreamliners so will try those
^I'd be quite curious to hear your opinion on the pro-tours and or dreamliners with them. I've been having a fuck of a time trying to get the pressure off the instep, but it doesn't seem nearly that bad with my power wraps. Going to try the stock liners 1 last time at the hill tommorrow and if it doesn't work out then i'm switching over to Intuitions.
I'm using the stock liners and I love them...tried them with powerwraps and they didn't feel right. Stiffness felt different and ROM was affected. Usually I dont like AT stock liners(Never used the ones that came with my virus's )but these suit the boot. YMMV obviously.Quote:

I have some orange power wrap ID's from my Dalbello alpine boots which could be remolded for the Mercury's and I think the Dynafit liners would work in the alpine boots at least as well ( a little more room available ) as the power wraps did so this might not cost any more $

This. I reefed on my TLT5 buckles on the first couple tours before I got the hang of it. Also, it helps to first pull the power strap tight as possible before flipping the buckle to ski mode.Quote:

I pulled the power strap off one of the 2 screws holding it on the back of the boot, I fixed it with a washer but the eyelets crimped into the strap are not going to be adequte
I don't think I had the cuffs locked on day one, I was skiing them with the cuff closed but not locked in ski mode, you do have to push forward and check to make sure the top buckle fully seats ...and then they ski fantastic !
Anyone put their mercury's in dukes yet?
I'm not getting the toe drop I want to make a card slide between the AFD and the sole!
I am still using an FR+ with no problems, got to quit skiing and get around to mounting the Verts!

Tried on some 28 Vulcans yesterday (I'd be borderline 27/28 shell but no 27 in stock). Pretty good overall and not overly-stiff IMO, but way too much room in the toebox for my foot. Makes me feel better about not being able to afford them. I'll make my Bodacious work another year, then see what new options surface.

The TLT5 boots have a squre knob as well, but it's smaller and the tongue is softer so it seems easier to get in.Quote:
