I finally mounted these fast boys up. These were a PSA closeout last winter and they showed up just as COVID shut down the resorts. I think they cost less than $65 after shipping.

The solid race plate was just big enough to mount the short P18 pattern. Thats my clear plexiglass "jig" sitting on top of the race plate, thats why the holes look so big. This was before I taped, measured, centered and clamped the plexiglass jig.

Wow, laser printers print on parchment paper.
I took a template, laid the two pages on top of eachother in illustrator, then I cut a 8.5x20" piece of parchment paper and just printed it. Perfect aliment and see through paper when trying to avoid old holes.

The Alpinist have one of the flattest deltas (+2mm) for a pin binding, was he trying to achieve an old school Dynafit high heel feel? Just curious why the heel shim?Quote:

That made it pretty straightforward to get the paper template lined up well enough for the heel holes.

The first ski took a little while, as this is the first mount I've done in my new place, and my workshop is far from being set up and organized so I was digging around in boxes for tools and whatnot. Second ski was super quick and easy.

The AlpInist setup in the photo is mine. And yes, I mounted with the shim to give them more delta/ramp. A test mount without shims confirmed that they are very flat. Here's what I measured if you're interested - I was measuring from the topsheet to arbitrary points marked on one of my boots so the absolute numbers aren't relevant just the comparison between them:Quote:

So shimming the Alpinist heel 7.25 to 11.25mm would have put its delta in the range of my other bindings. That's a huge shim and I was limited by the longest screws I had to hand so I used a 5.5mm shim in the end which makes their delta 0.25mm by my method of measuring, so still a few mm flatter than my other setups but much closer to them than stock. I haven't skied the Alpinist yet, in any configuration, so can't make any comments about how the shims affect feel but I've seen a few people mention shimming the heels and didn't like the sound of such a difference in delta compared to my other skis so shimmed them from the get-go. I made the shim long enough to support the brake pad and that acts as a heel support as you can see below, something that made a big difference to how my Plums felt when I added a DIY heel block and a friend who added brakes to his unshimmed Alpinists says the same - much less vague feeling at the heel.

I got it from home depot actually, but yeah it's probably on amazon too. It was only like $30 or something. Honestly bought it pretty specifically just for mounting skis when I can't use a jig, and I don't have the space nor did I wanna drop the cash for a proper drill press. It seemed to work well enough for this pair. I gotta order up some quiver killer inserts to put in my old Jeffrey 110s to do a pivot/CAST 1.0 setup, so I think it'll come in handy for that to keep the QK step bit from wandering in the old holes. I'll share that adventure whenever I get around to ordering the hardware and mounting em up.Quote:
