I saw a decent number of tracks in hourglass from the Northwest chairlift today. In bounds, snow at Rose was a little crusty and heavy, but plenty skiable.
Heavenly had fun fast pow up high today, rolling down back to the bottom of stagecoach was a bit icy and scary at times.

Great early am at heavy due to all other access lifts closed Cept stagecoach and they first under reported only 6" instead of their later 5-16" which kept the place a ghost town for a couple hours.
It was fun watching all the people at AM dressed like it was Antarctica, rather than what used to be considered normal around here. (I was one of those who overdressed a bit. Ah, that California sunshine.) Some nice face shots (from the snow guns, hard to see the snow gun drifts when you can't see anything. And some nice pow turns, although not enough.
kirkwood was really good today. eagles bowl across to palisades bowl is open. lots of exposed rock spackled with chalk makes lots of unique early season features a go.
beware of the vail hotel parking "solution" right now--stay'd at the mountain club and they wanted us to park in loop road maintenance lot!
powdork, do you still have that cord of wood? my buddy has a lease in the Wood and would like that wood in January if you can wait that long.
"Tests targeting this layer indicated that actually getting enough force through the snowpack to break this layer has become unlikely without a very large trigger or some exceptional circumstances."
Lucky kids.
A few shots from this weekend, skiing with AKbruin. E wind was pretty fierce today.

Rose area was meh today. We found some good snow & some variable crap. There were more tracks (and snowmobiles) than I've ever seen. The E wind was strong and moving a lot of snow.
We dug a pit to the ground on a ENE slope just below the top of Relay. There is a thin but strong ice layer at about 40 cm down, and the facets are about 15cm thick at the ground, but not totally formless like the ones I used to see in CO. Otherwise it was pretty uniform, and it took pulling on the column to break it.
Have fun out there!
Sounds like yesterday was the $ then. Definitely a beautiful day out in the rose area.

Burrr. It was one of those rare Tahoe days when I wore all my layers from start to finish.

Dude. We should have met up and shredded Caples Crest together. (No lost truck keys/90-minute wife rescue this trip.)
West Shore was not in great shape, incidentally. Needs a big storm.
Yeah it was definitely chilly in Tahoe this weekend. Plenty of ice at Alpine yesterday until you got up high were there was enough snow to cover it. Was fun on Saturday to get some of the first set of turns on Siberia Bowl when they opened up the bootpack.
$104 in credit on a start haus gift card. Yours for 100 even. Any takers?

fwiw, the only real avy I've been "caught" in around here was from a sneaky wind slab on a LOW day.
If I wanted to find the most probable place I could set off that deep PWL that is the exact spot I would go. 9-10k, N/NE facing, steep, probably wind loaded AF and with a bunch of shallow trigger points around those rocks. Seems super sketch to me but what do I know
Surprisingly crowded at Heavenly. Looks like the Holiday crowd cause I rode the lift with some Texans. Dipper had a long line around 1. No crowds in Stagecoach or Olympic.
Variable off piste and packed powder with icy spots on the piste.
Anybody else crossing their fingers for Friday? Any thoughts on the major model flip? 4 days of hang wringing about to ensue.
Some soft snow to be found around the Rose area today, more snow definitely wouldn't hurt though. https://www.instagram.com/p/BOOXYjOgAG5

Backside at the wood was surprisingly well covered except for the normal spots lookers left of the lift.
FYI it appears that Heavenly is enforcing its uphill policy this season. No more workout laps. :(
Congrats to Cinderz on scoring a new Fischer set up. I even saw her on the face-book.

Crater Lake/Red Lake Peak zone today.
