I went to a Left Hand beer/dinner pairing event at Lucky Pie one time. The owners were there talking about each dish and each beer, actually both dishes. They put two plates out with each one to bring out different flavors of each beer. Anyways, they said they weren't all that into IPA's which is how 400 lb monkey came to be named. They were getting egged on to make an ipa and their master brewer said, "Any monkey can throw 400 lbs of hops into a beer and make an ipa." So when they made one, that's how it got it's name.

I'm drinking a Ninkasi ReNEWAle right now. This is a seasonal and apparently they change the style each year. For 2013 it's an ESB. Good beer. Definitely on the hoppier side of the ESB spectrum. Many would consider this an IPA.

They don't have an IPA, but try Jackalope in Nashvegas. If you haven't had a german weissbier that hasn't been fucked in shipping/storage in a proper glass (i.e. the weissbier glass posted) try it. Awesome beer. Unfortunately most American hefe's suck, the closest are probably the discontinued Lagunitas Doppelweizen or the Sierra Nevada Hefeweizen (at least, of the one's I've tried)

Unless the prefix is Double, Triple, Quadruple or American.. Yes. You can have your session beer w/hops, or your hoppy porter, or your hoppy belgian.... but they aint' IPAs

No label. Just a brewpub in Boulder. FYIPA is the shit.

Bent Nail IPA from Red Lodge is pretty good and my go to as of late. Too bad fucking Costco stores it at room temp. I'd like to do a taste test to see the difference.
Also, Doublehaul IPA from Kettlehouse is the shit and gets to BZN pretty quickly.

stapes - Pliny the Younger is out this Friday at the Brewery. wasn't $10 for a 10oz, but it wasn't cheap either. Good beer... last years wasn't worth waiting in line IMO (covered up thread). Curious to see what other doubles and triples come out for beer week

Drakes Hopocalypse Black Label (12.5% IIPA won Gold at last year's DIPA/TIPA fest and beat the pants off the Younger) also releases this Saturday. It will be a good test to see how the brew team is really doing since Brian's departure last year, after Aroma Coma was kind of a letdown.

Unfortunately I'll be missing both releases for my AIARE 2 training (pretty good excuse IMO) ... hopefully plenty left for Beer Week which doesn't start until 2/8.

I also picked up on the reference a few years ago. I've climbed Illusion Dweller back in the day, and the beer is much easier to savor than the climb, I'll tell you that. Mountain Sun brews up some fine beers for sure. Great place to knock back a few after climbing in Eldo or spewing about climbing at Neptune. But I regress.

Dillon Dam Brewery in Summit, just released their IPA and it's pretty good. Lots of hoppy complexity and a nice body.

Fuck... you guys might not produce any snow but bravo on the beer. :tongue:

I'm sure I may have even mentioned 3Floyds "Zombie Dust" but on my way back from Florida we made it a point to stop in the Indiana brewpub. Unfortunately no growler fills or even any in 6ers to buy but that stuff is REALLY good on tap. Had some great PAs, IPAs, etc at the Cigar City brewpub in Florida while we were there. There are so many incredible pub only beers at just about any brewpub and I certainly wasn't dissapointed at either. Both had lots of good stout too.

I just moved here about 6 months ago from Boulder. I also grew up skiing Bear Valley and Kirkwood. I gained my love for craft beer in college because I'm a little guy, 5'8'', and couldn't down a 24 pack of swill like everyone else, so I started looking for 8-10%ers I could enjoy. Arrogant Bastard and Nimbus Brewery in Tucson sparked my interest.

Speaking of Stone, and I know it's not an IPA, but I know I've been bitching about caramel maltiness, but their 12-12-12 has been fan-fucking-tastic. Big ups to stone for making a beer I really enjoy in a genre I generally don't care for.

Yeah, I was out in San Jose and stopped in at craft brew geared liquor store in down town. I was going fishing with a buddy and I picked up 4 of them. I asked if they had any Pliny and they were "all out". I told them my sob story that I'm way out here in TN now and never have any chance to get it any more, "thanks though". A little later the stocker guy brought over hand fulls of beer to put in the fridge and I held the door open for him. When I went to check out he brought out a Pliny and said, "Here, this is from my personal stash." I had one while I was fishing, but poured the others out to family members over Thanksgiving dinner. They had had "some" craft beers, and were pretty blown away by Pliny and Enjoy by.

While I was in there (I guess they had just put the Enjoy by out that morning) at least 5 guys came through there and picked up their two per customer limit. I knew I was fortunate when I spotted it. It reminded me of this one day I went to Stone while I was in San Diego, total luck, but it was a day or two after they had a big event where they were pouring ALL of their vertical epics that they had released. I was one of about 5 people there, had the place to myself, and got to try quite a few of them, including the 7-7-07, 8-8-08, 5-5-05. The 7-7-07 was my favorite, kind of similar to 8-8-08 but aged in red wine barrels. I also was fortunate enough that day to get to try one of my favorite beers of all time there, which was a double dry hopped IPA that was only ever available there, but I have a feeling that's what the Enjoy by was.

From the lack of responses, I just have to ask... You guys DO know you aren't supposed to drink craft beer in a frosty frozen mug, right? Anyone that doesn't believe me really should experiment for themselves. Although I no longer believe it to be a craft brew, I did this with a Sierra Nevada PA. Take one beer, pour half of it in a frozen mug, the other half in a room temperature mug. Try both. You'll be amazed. Or for the ones that need citations.

Different stroke for different folks.

Example: My 65 yr. old mom has drank beer from a chilled mug all her life. Up to two years ago, it was Miller High-Life Light (or similar), but now it's only IPA's and such. Am I supposed to tell her that the chilled mug is wrong?

Well, I did....and she told me to STFU.

Coming from someone that drank Miller High Life Light, she probably likes what the frozen mug does to beer. My dad doesn't like beer all that much at all, but when he has sushi, he has a kirin ichiban in a frozen mug. I had him try it out of the mug first, then the bottle. He said the bottled kirin had, "I don't know... too much beer flavor."

So yes, different strokes for different folks, but the proper temperature to drink the big guys, DIPA's, Trippels, Quads, and other big Belgian beers is somewhere around 41-47 degrees, and in a frozen mug it takes about 45 mins to reach those temperatures.

But I agree, different strokes for different folks. Thank god a frozen mug doesn't change the ABV.
