I think there are a couple of factors at play.
Equipment has made skiing fresh snow and steep stuff so much easier. It has been a gradual change over 20 years or so.
Epic pass (and equivalents) mean a lot of people are skiing many more days than they used to. Like any skill, the more you do it the better you get, fitter and progress to more advanced stuff.
So 20 years ago on any given day there were probably only 10% of people on the mountain with the ability to ski the blacks, and even less the double blacks. Now that number is probably close to 50%. 20 years ago most of those people were sticking to the groomers, now they are bootpacking up spankys on pow days.
Another factor is a big improvement in weather forecasting tech, and availability of forecasts etc. People generally now know exactly which day is going to be the best 4-5days in advance, and can plan better to be there
