That was the incident that changed how I think about safe zones forever. I wasn't familiar enough with the specific terrain then or now to make any judgement about their choices but my takeaway has always been make sure your "safe zones" are REALLY FUCKING SAFE.

Pretty consistent trend among my long time BC skier friends to be finding alternative ways to reduce their exposure. Chairlifts, snowmobiles..... I'm definitely becoming a faceshots in zero degree pow on the sled kinda guy these days.

I've said it before. I think that as we because more seasoned and knowledgeable backcountry skiers, our risk profile changes. We are less likely to make the school boy errors that are the meat and potatoes of Awareness and L1 Classes.

First Aid - I've had way more friends be hurt in the BC than caught in avalanches. And if you are caught and companion rescued, injury is likely.

Be First Aid Trained
Ski 5/10 Max
Comms (InReach, Radios, phone) - know how to use them
Evac don't fool yourself, its hard AF
Resources - know what's available how "deep" are you?

Shit Safe Zones - Island of Safety to Island of Safety frequently precludes maintaining visual contact. Its a hard habit to break and if often feels like you are skiing alone. So yeah, keep going. Way up into the trees. So far the bottom up rescue will require skins. Back enough from the start zone that you can't see the line. And so on.

But yeah, go skiing. Wanker is 125 ytd. And us ski town economies need to Win the Holidays. Don't forget your wallet! Its a good start to the year and I'm stoked for what is to come.

Tragedy. Sorry for your loss and dealing with the consequences.

Terrain, terrain, terrain. Always be managing terrain. Can it slide here or above? Avoid being in terrain traps and skiing over cliffs at all cost. Even in low danger. Always ask what would happen if it moves.

Some parties are too large IMO. Keeping more than 3/4 on the same page is nigh impossible.

They're literally just going to post up right next to the WWSRA demo that will be happening, without even actually being a part of it.

I didn't get to try it at the other loveland demo in december, so I plan on getting a lap in on them, feel like I gotta at least try it.

You guys don't even snowboard. Those socks are for snowboarders only. If you guys buy me a LL lift ticket, I will attend and report back with a full review.

Looks like Peak 1's NE face slid pretty big yesterday. It isn't at all surprising that slope slid, that it was a remote trigger, or that it went large (!). But what is surprising (at least to me) is that the Summit County Sheriff's Office appears to have captured live footage of the trigger and slide via either a stationary camera or a drone:

Anyone have insight into how the live footage came about? Does the Sheriff's Office have a camera trained on Peak 1 constantly? Drones in regular operation surveying common backcountry haunts? Or did they just get super lucky to happen to have the camera running precisely where and when the slide happened?

The footage is super cool, but it seems to suggest that the SCSO might have some sort of default surveillance up and running--which I would find surprising and notable.

Looks like a remote trigger from the folks that approached the cornice on the ridge

Yeah, that seems like the most likely reason. Agreed that it looks like a long lens. Though if that was the case, wouldn’t they have moved the lens to film the entirety of the slide? Maybe they set it up and walked away. Idk.

If anyone has any info to the contrary (i.e., that the SCSO does have some sort of default surveillance going), I’d be super curious to learn more.

any experts on billboard laws in Colorado? This realtor thinks this is the first thing people want to see as they come out of the South Fork canyon. I want it gone.

It's controlled by zoning. There's a zoning dept for every city. If the sign wasn't permitted it would be a no brainier to get it knocked down. If it's permitted, out of luck.

I think it is in Mineral County. Their zoning says
(J) Outdoor General Advertising Signs
1. Outdoor general advertising signs, not exceeding 32 square feet in area will be
permitted in any zone district except RE, R, MHE of MH.
2. No outdoor general advertising sign shall be painted on or attached to any natural
physical feature or any public property.
Will contact Mineral County tomorrow. That sign is definitely bigger than a sheet of plywood.

Fridat was my first time skiing uphill since foot surgery 14 months ago. It felt amazing and terrible. The dog was punching through a crust about 8 inches down and had a tough time. At least he made me feel less slow than I really was.
