chamonix.com weather (http://meteo.chamonix.com/MetPreE.php3):
TOMORROW FRIDAY DECEMBER 16
Gloomy and cold - snow
...
PRECIPITATION : starting up in the morning - continuous light or moderate - rain-snow limit towards 700 m, dropping - expected snowfall ... 30-40 cm.
Snow-forecast isn't so much, but I'm laying my money on chamonix.com....

Off to Tignes in 0.5 hour- snow is forecast but no idea how much really- snow-forecast says a few cm but they say that about Chamonix yet the CHam Meto are giving 0.5-8m over the next few days.
A 28hour coahc ride from Edinburgh, we might even get some snow showers on the way down to Dover- snow showers forecast down the east coast of UK as we are sitting in a strong Northerly.
If anything gets done I'll post pics.
28 hr Coach ride!! That'll be brutal. Hope you packed the Iron Bru & Vodka!
& thanks for the sacrificial lamb Ripz. Heal fast.
let me correct this: it has not even started really.Quote:

Can anybody say anything about the base conditions of st.anton,st.moriz,ischgl or lech?
Were thinking that we could check out the "PoshResorts" since the competition for the lines arent that bad there, because the rich people are sleeping out their shampagne hangovers in the morning...
Meat - I'm here for the season. Conditions so far have been OK, but not too good. Pretty limited as to what you are able to ski off piste, but if this storm pans out as they are predicting a lot should open up. As far as I know Lech is in the same boat snow wise.
the base is pretty fucked in tyrol right now. thin(30cm at 2000m), hoar, depth hoar and so on. with the 100cm from this storm you'll have to bee really really careful.
@ meat st. moritz and engadin have a good covergae statistically(percentage fromaverage), but the absolute numbers are lower than on the northside especially after this storm.
Nice! 33 days and counting until good ole St. Anton!
the fact that most of the mountain in st anton is now on wind hold should make things extra saucy with the snowpack for the next while.Quote:

I mean, Lech should have a 120-150cm and cham a 150-170cm base at the moment?
Bollocks.
Subtle, you mean that moritz and engadion have usually good base at this time of the year,of that they have it allready now?
Slut, can you recommend any reasonably priced lodging in the area for 2guys, if we should pop by in that area after christmas? Somewhere down in the valley perhaps, since everything could be full? Or?
huh ? where is your lech ;) ? mine ist right in the green 50-70cm spot. so 30cm at an exposed south facing measuring station (st. anton galzig)Quote:

the model caluclates heights. so if a large area is higher you will get higher values. as for example in cham
Snow started mid-morning in Chamonix. 5-10cm on the ground already, but it's snowing big fat flakes and previous experience says there will be more up high. Resort opening tomorrow... OHHH YEAHHHH.....
thanks brian! yoo hoo!
Hayduke and I preparing to invade tonight...staying at the Hotel Croix Blanche (arriving around 10.30-11, I think).
Skied Schlick (near Innsbruck) today, there was about 10-15cm of new already @ 9AM. Snowed all the day probably ending to at least 30cm of new by 15PM, hopefully it will continue like that all the night.. Snow was quite heavy tho, temperature wasnt that low.. Here in the valley its coming down as water.. gonna go to schlick again tomorrow and ski trees or something, avalanches arent good for your health..
snow all day in Les Diablerets (switz.), freeski cancelled today.
stopped snowing for an hour or so. maybe 15+.
this season smells good in western alps...
Glad to hear you made it over safely. Just got back from Cantina. We'll likely be on the 8h46 train... thinking Vallerocine if the weather stays closed in but will check what's open in the morning and make a decision. Orange Mountain Hardware jacket, black Mammut ski pants, completely fucked all to hell Scratch BC 2004 (the beige ones with the orange chick on them) skis.Quote:

Snowed all day yesterday and last night.
Still snowing this morning.
:tdo13: :tdo13: :tdo13:
St Anton update:
60cm in town, over 120cm in the trees on Galzig and its still coming down. Galzig only opened for a couple hours today and you'll see me write words that you will probably never see again from me: It was too deep. Once you got into the sheltered areas you could only connect two to three turns before choking on the face shots. :yourock:
Unfortunately I tweaked my knee falling off of a 2m cornice in the alpine and may have to miss the next few days of this madness...
Meat - for cheaper accomodation i recommend staying in Pettneu or Shnann. They're not too far down the valley and are connected to St Anton by bus. Check out the central reservations at www.stantonamarlberg.com
Powslut, has the Rendl opened yet? Stuben?
rendl apparently opens on the 20th and stuben has only had albona 1 opened so far. until this weekend it was pretty grim around here.Quote:

I don't get back to Europe until December 21st, but my brother wants to hit the Kripp on December 19 and 20. Any takers? Come on Subtle, you know you want to.Quote:

Snowed HARD all day.
Our tracks were filled in after every run.
Wind blowing, viz not so good up high, fine in the trees.
Ahhhh, the trees.
Not sure where we are in terms of snow (base/fresh),
but there is alot out there, and plenty of it!
And still snowing.
00h30
Still snowing HARD!
Hasn't stopped all day.
18 December 2005 07h30.
Blue sky.
Everything else is white.

We got the best of it here if anyone asks me. The direction of the storm made for a settling of snow all over Leysin's South side. Wind howling on top, while no wind elsewhere. Tour d'Ai blocked it all.
The final bit of snow, some 30cm, was light and fluffy.
That on top of heavier bonding snow.
Here is the rough deal.
We had snow like a snow cannon would produce for about a day.
It came full on hammering down. Thick, filling snow.
That was followed by light and fluffy, and blue sky.
Don't make me brag. Thigh to waist deep with skis on.
Skis off was another story. Ask Batman.
Edit = My next report comes with the next snow. I don't do crystal balls.
