I wanted to step up onto the Jong hot seat and feel the love. Been lurking some and it seemed the right time to make some introductions. Grew up out west...back in DC now. Will be in UT at least 3 times this year and also in Telluride.
I like to kick it old school: some rear-entry Salomons circa 1986, straight Rosi 4Ss-203 cm, some good, tight Levi blue jeans and a Pats sweatshirt right out of Belichick's wardrobe....y'all are still wearing that kind of stuff no? I'm definitely willing to trade some gear, if you're interested. Other than that, I just love killing it all day long: POW, bumps, steeps whatever. That's all I got.

Been bouncing around TGR for about 2-3 years now getting amped up about the nordic downhill discipline. Was a rider from roughly 94-03 and loved every second of it....until I got into following some homegrown Colorado heads in Gunnison/CB. Trying to keep up with tele skiers....forget about it. So I picked myself up a pair of Atomic TM:EXs and managed to figure out how to only go to school two days a week....93 days at CBMR my first season (i know because they track season passes) plus roughly 10 backcountry days. Learned the shit out of tele. My boys would break trail twice as fast as I could skin...wait for me to catch up, bounce as soon as I would arrive...and eventually i could keep em in view. So long story shortish I became completely committed to the lifestyle; if only for two seasons. In '05 I left the valley for Portland and completely changed my lifestyle. Now it is de rigeur to find myself walking on the sidewalk downtown in a tailored suit....environmental litigation. Do well by doing good I guess....but i've lost the dirtbag lifestyle that was my identity for more than a few years.
So i've signed up to give props to ya'll for making a place when I can read stories that remind me of the beautiful intense driven people that have the passion to go and do what is overwhelmingly confounding to those who do not understand.

What's up. I've been reading (ok maybe lurking) the site since summer. I got brought into the skiing again by my husband a few years back and now I'm hooked -- hence the reading of ski websites in the summer. We mostly ski Alpine and Squaw in tahoe . . . and I'm pretty sure I have a pair of Fritschi Freerides and some skins under the tree.
Be in Whistler next week and Jackson in February . . . and here's to putting the snow vibes out there for some snow in tahoe.
Hello all. I am recently retired, finally have the time to spend perusing this most entertaining forum. Was a Summit County CO powder hound in the 70's and 80's (the pre-clusterf**k era), more recently at home in LCC, now looking for the next great powder mecca. Knees and hips pretty worn out so I don't risk the crazy stuff much anymore, but still enjoy a good floating carve as much as anyone.

This seems like as good a thread as any for a first post, I've been Lurking for a while, so i decided to drop in.
I got a late start on the slopes in my early 20's. After always wanting to ski and having a few false starts, A college friend invited me to ski (and took the time to teach me) and I've been hooked for 18 years since.
Mrs. GunPowder... Not so much.
Currently on Volkl 5 stars, I love ripping down the slopes and getting what air i dare.

Yaaay my first post. What a jong. Been lurking for a few months, decided it was time to say hi.
I've been on skis since about the age of 2 and after a hiatus of a couple of years (well, only 2-3 ski days in those years) I am back at it as much as possible which means mostly the weekends, although management is understanding if I take a powder day here and there. I rip hard on just about anything unless there's large mandatory air. I mostly ski Whistler, Baker and the north shore.
Just to prove my jongness, what the hell is change for a nickel supposed to mean?

I'm old, been sliding on snow since age 5 or so, first xc, then alpine, then boards, kites and bi-decks. still hit the saucer sled when conditions are prime. and the sauce, conditions be damned.
Live in north idaho, 40 miles from canookistan. halfway between the selkirks and the cabinets.
hope to post some photos that don't suck at some point. otherwise i'll just ride and not spray about it.

Been lurking for a while now and decided to post. Been skiing for 20 years all over the west before converting to riding, now 10+ seasons and not looking back. From bay area for now but now have a place to crash in El Dorado Hills. So hope to hit Kirkwood more this season and find a crew to ride with.
been lurking for a long while, figured i'd make myself known. i live just north of cincinnati, so i don't get to do a lot of really good riding. i went to mammoth a couple years back and was blessed with 79 inches the week we were there. it was very eye-opening. i might be making a trip out to mt. baker next month as long as i can scratch together some money. i ride a burton baron es 164 with flow eleven bindings. i'm big, slow, and i spain easily. but i have a lot of fun when i actually get out there and ride. well i guess let it snow! peace off.
In response to new speed limits at European resorts:
I think that this is the most pansy assed, sissy move a ski resort can make. Skiing is a risky activity. Period. That is why people do it, because it is exhilarating. If it was safe and boring they would call it walking. And last time I check my skis didn't come with a speedometer, so how am I supposed to even know if I am speeding?
The people who complain about other people skiing too fast are not the real skiers. They are not the people who are at the mountain every day at the crack of dawn. They are not the people whos legs twitch at night while they dream of powder. They are tourists and beginners who should themselves be confined to some green circle trail until they get a permit for the rest of the mountain! I would be a fan of that. How about instead of trying to rope in the talented skiers we exercise some gaper control measures so I don’t land on some tourists head when he decides to camp out and having a fucking family picnic in the landing zone of a 60 foot table. They are the dangerous ones!
If mountain safety has deteriorated because the slopes are becoming increasingly crowded then the answer is to cap lift ticket sales at a reasonable number of skiers each day. Trying to solve overcrowding with speed limits doesn’t make the mountain safer, it makes traffic.
If I lived in Switzerland and these were my home mountains, places that I turn to ESCAPE things like traffic and sociopolitical bullshit, where I go to get my adrenaline fix… then I would boycott those resorts. In fact I would publicly burn my lift ticket and then I would hike up the damn mountain just to ski down the entire thing in a full racing tuck.
If you want to talk about dangerous habits of European skiers how about we talk about the fact that they are shit faced 24/7. Hmmm, Drunken skiers are OK but talented fast skiers are dangerous? PLEASE.
All I know is if some snow cop wants to give me a ticket he better like the taste of rooster tails… and tackle better than bob sanders…actually, he better have a snowmobile.

It's your pleasure I've decided to start posting here. Believe me, my internet is strong. Though not as strong as my tele pow crushing. I've been at that for almost 2 years and can hang with em all (round here in Missoula anyway). I alpined 18 or years before that, mostly in upstate, NY (so not really).
This early season here has been spectacular and as such eye opening. I currently don't work in any traditional sense, so all I have is time (to ski and tron and drink).

Hello world, JONG here. Been lurking, but I finally have something to say. I learned to ski pretty young in the mountainous state of Michigan, which really means I learned how to ride a chairlift like a pro. Since my first trip to that paradise we know as the Rockies, I was hooked by that pure and natural high we get from rippin. To this day it's still the greatest high I've ever experienced. However, I've never jumped out of a plane, cause I'm kind of a pussy. And crack sounds fun, other than that whole destroying your life part. Anyways, I vowed at about 12 or 13 years old that I would return to that paradise, not as a tourist, but as a bum. The life appealed to me so much, still does today. It's like having an all access pass to the fastest roller coaster in the world, in your backyard. So, as I got older the grind of real life started to take its tole; some pointless thing called college wasted about 5 years of my life, and at one point I doubted if I would be man enough to pick up and roll. This summer I got what seemed like an amazing opportunity... a season of working at a ski resort in the French Alps. I'd been a couple times before and loved it like the Rockies. However, here is the problem... this bullshit job I've got catering to rich folks who could give a shit about the mountain as long as their 5 o'clock spa is ready, is really starting to wear on me. Plus, I get stuck with the shittiest job in the joint, the night porter. Which seems great, in theory, for skiing, right? Except, when I don't get to sleep until 6 or 7 in the morning, waking up early to hit the mountain ain't exactly easy. Sure, I had the mountain rush the first 3 or 4 days, up early rippin all day. But, the 3 or 4 hours of sleep started to catch up, and eventually you're just in the grind of working, which is not a good grind. I just finished my 20th fucking night of work, in a row! Finished a little early too, cause I'm going skiing tomorrow, can't let the man hold you down, ya know? Finally I come to my question. Do the maggots of this site advocate the quitting of my soul draining job in pursuit of the good life, the life I've dreamt about for over 13 years? Cause what I'm doing right now is just not cool man. Thanks for allowing me to vent. Any words of encouragement, discouragement, or good excuses for quitting a job are welcomed.
A few months ago (in Minnesota) I decided I was finally fed up with working at a law firm. I decided I needed to ski more....so I moved to Switzerland.
I live near Geneva...24...female...someone ski with me! I promise I'm nice and smiley...and I promise I can keep up. :) I have a racing background and I'm on the Volkl Mantras (love 'em). I've met a lot of nice people to go out with but they don't like going too far off piste...and even if they do, they're incredibly slow and like to stay in sight of the chairlifts. Anyone want to show me around the area?? I'm really looking for people to chase around the rock...people who can direct me to the best pow. I can't stand another weekend of paying for a lift ticket to ride with people who are afraid to take a chance. I'm especially antsy after breaking my damn elbow last January in Jackson.
ANYWAY! If someone doesn't mind letting a girl tag along...let me know! Or if you want to go out for drinks and give me the scoop....

Hi, folks. I've read this forum off and on over the years, mostly as a result of search engine queries. I've recently been sucked in to a greater degree so figured I'd create an account so I could do more than lurk.
Grew up in Sandy, UT and thought it was "normal" to live four miles from the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. When I took a job out of state, I found out the hard way just how good I had it growing up. Currently live in Idaho and am close enough to ski several days at Alta every year, but am trying to get things in order to move back permanently.
What's up all? Been lurking for quite a while, mainly absorbing knowledge for free...figured it's probably time to take my lumps and start posting.
I recently moved back to BC after 10 years on the EC - good to back in a place where I don't have to pick branches out of my teeth after a day on the hill.

Alright, guess I'll throw in my intro...
20 year old here. Grew up in Wisconsin, spent 2 years Patrolling there. Went to Arizona State University for a year, then got sick of it. Spent a year in Heavenly as a Patroller, and now I'm in Vail as a Ski Instructor. Probably not going to be moving for awhile.
18, from nz, been skiing for 10 years, Wanaka, Queenstown, Ruapehu and the Club Fields, don't live near the mountains and don't ski nearly enough but am completely obsessed. Will be spending every uni holidays in the States starting from next year. ALso doing an Uni exchange program in Colorado, Skiied Utah last year 15-30th Feb which gave me a good insight into Wasatch culture.
Just remember what you live close to, brutha'.

Hey, I've been hanging around here a while, and decided that I should post here before I hit 100 postings elsewhere on the board.
As my profile says, I live in San Francisco. I grew up in Southern California skiing Mt. Baldy, Snow Valley, Big Bear and Mammoth. Moved north to N. CA in the early 70s and started skiing Tahoe, primarily Squaw, Alpine, Heavenly, Sugar Bowl, and Kirkweed.
Once the drive from San Francisco to Tahoe got to over five or six hours on a regular basis (Highway 80 sucks), I started skiing Utah instead. Now, I try to get to Alta for at least four or five weeks per winter and at least a couple of weeks up at Jackson Hole. Alta and Jackson are absolutely my favorite mountains, although I do like Taos and the steeps in Switzerland.
Over the years I've moved further and further from the groomed slopes, and now only really ski them when I'm with friends who are limited to that sort of snow, either for medical or skill reasons. I'm happy to say that in four weeks skiing this year I've managed to avoid all but eight groomed runs! This, of course, lead me to back-country skiing, and I've been loving my AT rig.
At 56 I'm now skiing better than I ever have, proving that this is not a "age limited" sport, and I expect to work into hut touring and other back country trips over the coming years. I have no doubt that I'll be one of those great old guys who skis Alta and tortures everyone well into my 80s.
I'm almost always at Alta the first week of April - really one of the best weeks there - so if you see an "old guy" in the Nest say "hi".

Scyscrape here. Been on and off the site for the last few years. Leared to skii as a lad in the mountains of Switzerland, as I spent the majority of my youth in Europe. We finally moved back to the states and I took a ten year hiatus till College. Went to School in So Cal, and volunteered at the adaptive ski school @ bear mountain. Teaching the blind to ski was very satisfying, as they have no fear. Felt pretty good about skiing at the time, till parents moved to Jackson Hole, and i was bent over immediately by the mountain. Been Skiing JH on and off for last 10 years. Live in the heart of San Francisco now, and ride Tahoe every week. best wishes

I spent the first half of my life lurking the southern end of NY skiing as many days as my meager life could afford. Somewhere along the way I lost focus, moved to the southland, got a job, got married, reproduced and gave up skiing. But thankfully the snow gods took pity on my soul and I was introduced to the pleasure of sliding down mountains under Carolina blue skies. I sneak up as often as I can and even escape to VT from time to time. All in all it is good to know my old friend again...

I've always been impressed with the amount of knowledge and smacktalk on this forum. ;) Born into adulthood by the hills of West Virginia, after being raised in the valleys of Pennsylvania...I took up kayaking a few years ago. I like it. Took up skiing a few years ago. I like it. Took up all things cycling a few years after I was born. I like it. Packed it up and headed west, in the process - moving away from the best friends anyone could ask for. Now in Oregon, fighting the urge to move back to the history in the Appalachians and the friends that roam among them. Damn big mountains and everything keeping holding me back. I'm a dork...and a student as well - trying to get the hell outta dodge for the last time...I don't like my office (even though it has a window...that's probably why I don't like it).
The PNW is having a banner year in the snow department. Ya'll should come out and get some if you're not already here.
I like my creeks steep, my heels free, and my tires knobby. Everything else is details.
