@Dr Crank, pretty sure that area is where Scott Johnston of Uphill Athlete/Evoke Endurance fame resides. It's a hot bed for nordic skiing due to a fairly extensive trail network. Would check out that they're training well with the wealth of knowledge around
Alkasqwalik uses Sam Naney @ Uphill I believe.
Anyway, it’s the largest cross country skiing network in North America with over 200 km of connected trails so it attracted a couple Olympic athletes a whole bunch of years ago and it took off from there.
Lol, beautiful pup and scenery.
Nice dog. I need to get mine out more.
I had the pleasure of skiing with my wife this morning. Made it out right after the groomer finished and the sun even showed up for a bit.

I saw a post somewhere recently that said skate is only about 30% faster than classic (and sometimes as low as 5% faster depending on conditions/terrain).
That just tells me I'm absolute ass at classic skiing, because I'd say I go at least twice as fast on skate skis--and I'm not claiming to be great at skating either.
A big part of that is motivation...I just can't convince myself to work hard on classic skis. Casual striding is fine to the level of a light jog...but I can't make myself "run" or double pole for very long before I just give up. I'm OK with that though as when I'm on classic skis it is more about just getting out there and exploring/enjoying the outdoors. Probably doesn't help using wider/heavier waxless skis...never been on properly-fit classic skis with kick wax.
The speed comes much more naturally to me on skate skis. They force the motivation for a minimum level of effort--either you are skating, or you're not moving. The bare minimum effort is much higher, so even if I am not trying to push myself hard, my average speed feels much higher.
A few more.
I managed to trash my skate skis so I think that means it is time for an upgrade. For the time being I'm working on my classic technique.

Looking good y’all.
From yesterday in Woodstock VT. Snow was wicked fast. Love my new skis

They are fun!
Fischer Speedmax 186cm
I had a pair of Fischer crowns classics with a fluorescent orange base. With the right light, they made the track glow under my stride. Those top sheets on a freestyle ski would be a quick reminder to keep my head up on our up-and-down tracks!

Finally a legitimately cold winter day, snow was surprisingly fast even at a 5 degree air temperature.
Felt good to have cold feet for a change.

Marshalling for the local Birchleg loppet. Fresh corduroy and a clear skies made for a fantastic run up to my station.

Nice!
Ullr has been kind with the steady refreshes of late. 10k silent running by headlamp. This trail visitor made a u-turn not long before my arrival. Great grey was hooting up a storm shortly before.

With the spooky snowpack in the alpine, the XC trails have been a godsend this season.
Still holding on back east, winter refresh starts tomorrow! I was back up at Green Woodlands today, Bob Green purchased a new Piston Bully 100 with a brand new tiller, it was incredible today. It still blows my mind that it’s all free, I stopped at two of the fire pits today for s’mores w/ fancy designer marshmallows, I went with the Irish cream flavor, and organic Hersheys on graham crackers and a hot cocoa. Place is truly special
Only grabbed one crappy pic, skied about 33K. I’m smoked!

Groomer has been having trouble keeping up with the new snow.

Another 30+cm forecast over the next 24hr. Freestyle will be a bust this weekend, time to go meadowskipping with the metal edged alpinas. We’ll see how the groomed trails are for the kid’s jackrabbits on Sun afternoon.
Very temped to play hooky on Mon or Tues and hit the BC.
First tracks with the ladies.

That looks mint!
We are finally in a good stretch of actual winter. Today was a bit soft, but it’s just what we needed. More snow coming. First Alpine day of the season might happen tomorrow!

Huge day for Nordic skiing in the USA!
Finally subscribed to ski and snowboard live so I could watch some races.
Anyone else ski the Birkie? A bunch of folks in our crew bailed, expecting terrible weather and a slow track. I almost did after my original flight was blizzard cancelled, but very happy I didn't. Turned out to be an absolutely lovely day for a skate. Wish I had pictures to share, but I was too busy wrecking myself
I haven’t attended the Edmonton Birkie since the mid ‘90’s but would like to participate one day again. I just looked up their website and discovered I could have entered the virtual birkie and completed it here (or anywhere I guess). Will consider doing that next year. https://canadianbirkie.com/virtual-birkie/
Was a trail marshall for our own little Birchleg loppet. Small turnout this year, which is both sad, but more Swedish meatballs for me! The average age of attendees is rising, which is a shame. The conditions were fantastic however!
Was at Planica in Slovenia a couple of weeks ago and stumbled into all the world championships setup. Cool area and neat to see and ski into the stadium finish with grandstands surrounding.
Inspired to post after Jesse Diggins win today

Those pics are amazing.
I snuck out this morning to climb some hills and take advantage of clear weather. It was much warmer and slower than I anticipated, but still worth it.
