Still a lot of low hanging fruit in the Mt. Baker backcountry more than a week after the last storm. Got out for a hike with some good friends for a day then watched my roommate win the LBS for the second time, and he still can't drink beer.

They've given out a free heli-skiing trip in every years contest as the grand prize. I'll be done with college in March and ending on a note like that would be an unreal experience and truly the trip of a lifetime.

I can vouch that not only does Cory take some pretty pictures, but he would be the best skier on the mountain if I didn't fuck that up for him. I'd be stoked to see the pictures that came out of a heli trip.
Okay so, I have class tomorrow that I can't skip and class wednesday at 12 that I can't skip.
I was thinking about a little dawn patrol action before class on wednesday. I go to school in Tacoma. Any rec's on somewhere safe to go?

I heard a huge slide in the Alpental valley this morning ~10:30 while occupying the padded seats. I didn't hear a bomb beforehand and it sounded like it came from across the valley, but sound travels in weird ways up there. Traffic was flowing freely on I-90, which makes me believe it wasn't WSDOT-initiated... anyone else hear/see it? Hoping it was a natural, but jeez did it give me the creeps.

But holy jeebus! Vibes to the group in the red SUV that sailed of the road after the first hairpin going down this afternoon. Word at the road was three were okay but shaken but 1 more was trapped in the truck with a back injury. When I took a peek down through the hole in the snowbank, there were at least 6 people already down at the vehicle 40 or so yards below. Shitty end to a great day to have to have seen that mess. No one had any idea wtf happened.
Boot top windfucked cream cheese today at Stevens. Fun, but got chunky fast. In more sheltered northerly aspects, very nice snow.
Lots of results from patrol. plenty of windloading in open areas. even some mini slides off the side of the road on the bank, caused by the snowplow.
Moral of the story: The snow is fun, but not worth dying over. Don't be stupid out there.

Holy shit. Talked to a patroller yesterday who was coming back from wenatchee trees into E and he said that skiing was pretty meh, highly variable, tree bombs setting off slides. This rain isn't going to help either. I doubt it'll make it through the wind slab from yesterday. So yeah, its probably just going to get worse for the next couple days.Quote:
