Can anyone give me an eastside mosquito report? I'm responsibe for finding a camp spot for about 20 fathers and sons for an annual trip. I'm lobbying for Green Creek, but after one year getting eaten alive there, the others are whining about mosquitos. Anyone camped up there lately? I know there's tons of water and they'll be out, but that one year really was unbearable.
Camped up at this meadow about a 1000 ft down from laurel lakes, not green creek but i suspect a very similar elevation, also near lots of water and while we were not eaten alive mosquitoes definitely were there. Down in the valley by the hotsprings it was ridiculous though, just hordes chasing after you

I got attacked my serious skeeters at Topaz Lake last night whilst walking Vets' dogs, so methinks they're out in force everywhere...
I was all gung-ho to hike/ski Ebbetts today, then remembered it was the Death Ride (checked their site and they had both Monitor and Ebbetts closed to car traffic for a large chunk of time). After that hitch I never got motivated to head down to either Sonora Pass or Dunderberg.
s-bag rd is sposed to open the 15th.
did the hike a bike on sat and slogged out to the zone. suncups in the flats, small cups on moderate pitches, smooth on steeps. some folks were out in the conness area and their trax looke good and were not trenched at all. i presume the hatch hasnt even happenned yet there due to all the snow. we skied all 3 n peak couloirs and all 3 were as good as i've evr skied them
Back in Cali after more than a month. Crazy that the Eastside is still going strong.
I'm planning some turns out near Tioga area on Friday the 22nd and/or Saturday the 23rd if anyone is interested. Thinking Round Top/Sisters (Carson Pass) aspects on Saturday/Sunday as alternates so I'm closer to our house in South Lake. Wife and kids out of town, that's all I have to say. :)

Visitors center, but even easier online. Go to Inyo Forest site (or any FS, BLM site) and search for fire permit, print and sign...done.
Yes, but you might get a bunch of motorcycles riding through camp. Try to stay as far away from any obvious trails as possible. You need to be outside of the MML town zone, which is maked by a sigh on the scenic loop, but not sure about other areas around town.Quote:

BTW, Carson is holding up well. I busted out some early evening patches off the Forestdale Creek Road on Monday and then Vets and I returned to the scene of the crime to hit some other patches I'd reconned. We actually ended up hiking just up underneath Elephant's Back from the opposite direction (might be an easier hike). I really wanted to boot EB, but it was pretty late in the evening, plus we had rambunctious dogs in tow.
Blue Lakes Road is closed 7 miles in, but The Nipple and surrounding areas look tight.
Crater Lake Road stalls out due to mud and snow several miles up, but the saddle above the lake is holding nice snow.
Forestdale Creek Road stalls out due to snow and mud just before "The Patches", which, btw, are long, steep, and full of snow (so is all the surrounding area up closer to the Divide).
Lottsa goods to be had in this area, for sure.
About to head out to Sonora and/or The Sweetwaters now.
Snow has been damn bueno. Sun cupped, sure, but they are soft and smearable with a firm undercrust. Quite solid and totally mint for this time of year.

4wd would have been nice when I was whipping it around the desert, but since I didn't get stuck I was just happy to be in a rental with full insurance. That was maybe the most fun I've ever had driving in my life.
The skiing wasn't bad either.

Twins. The road to Saddlebag will probably not be open. My buddy climbed Conness on Monday and said there is still a ton of snow up there and the lake is still frozen over.
