Good one. Been enjoying it at work today. Unmistakable, hard drug fueled guitar from Garcia and the kits are all over the place, (not in a bad way). Good representation of that year. From the sound of it, garcia seems a tad less out of it than many other '84 shows.
Bird Song is great.
Thx for posting this one!
BFs comments got me thinkin of some I was at that I haven't been back to in a while.
This one in particular came to mind. [url]https://archive.org/details/gd87-06-30.schoeps.ladner.8577.sbeok.shnf[/
Yes, it was hot. With the wind, felt just like standing in front of a hair dryer.

Anybody want the new Dave's picks? Probably my favorite Dead show of all time going back to when I was a dumb high school kid

How do you know this? Just general knowledge of his drug use or specific things you hear in his playing? I always thought it would be really illuminating to have a list of the drugs consumed for each show, like what were they on for the Alligator thru Caution on 2/14/70 or the jam coming out of Drums on 4/29/71 or even 5/11/77 (my first show).
Made me think...I wasn't at this show and even if I was I would not know what/if he was on. I know gracia's story purdy well but didn't know the guy personally. There is a very distinct change to his playing in the early 80's up until the coma. Those close to the band, (one guy who I am close to), during that time have reflected on the use of certain drugs, (outside of psychedelics and weed), making a big impact on Garcia's playing.
If you listen to shows back-to-back from that era it becomes relatively easy to pick out when his playing was very erratic. Garcia was always a proponent of the space in between notes being as important as the actual notes being played. That part of his playing was absent more than not in '84 and '85. Some Dead aficionados attribute this style of play to his altered state, whether it was during a show or not.
To answer your Q...I don't know and shouldn't speculate. Generally I try and focus on the positive stuff but sometime when this time period comes up, I slip up. The whole band gets talked about in the context of drug use too much anyway.
Good show regardless.
Yea, Jer did a lot of Persian from 80-85

Anyone else find the new archive.org a little annoying and difficult? Maybe I'm just resisting change but it's irritating me.
