From the Juneau School District: Due to increasing COVID-19 cases in Juneau, CDC has changed Juneau's Alert Level to High. Per the current JSD Mask Policy and the CDC Alert Level change, Juneau School District will return to masks required indoors in Juneau School District facilities.

Effective immediately, masks are required indoors in JSD facilities.

CDC updates their alert level weekly. Masks will be required at least through this next week, until further notice.

I saw that Philly dropped their city-wide mandate this week because of political pressure.

Yep. Any doubters take a look at Hong Kong's recent experience. Low vax rate plus omicron gave them the world's highest fatality rate (so far). Looks like maybe omicron is not milder, rather a partially immune populace resists it better.

Yesterday ABC news was speaking with the higher ups at airlines about this very point. You are correct, but they say they started to run the systems on the ground after the pandemic hit... They're on the minute people start boarding and stay on until everyone has deboarded now.

In BC times there were several studies looking at airplanes. I haven't looked lately, but 5 years ago I found several sources concluding that people do in fact catch things on planes quite often, not because the air is filled with viruses but because it is dry (frequent exchange with high altitude sourcing). Drying you out makes you more susceptible.

Even a bandana will up the humidity in your microclimate.

Left Juneau last year, don't miss those politics at all. Seeing Juneau kids doing spelling B's in plexiglass bubbles is just ridiculous.

BRH has 1 covid patient currently, and only 2/10 icu beds occupied, and the population has over 80% vax rate.

Better than remote online class..

Burying kids, or teachers, or their household high risk family members is not "silly".

Seems excessive and beyond what's needed if they are, indeed 80% people fully vaxed and boosted. But, if that's what they decided, I'd be all in if my kids were going to school there.. Again, beats remote online learning...

I know of a healthy, thin, fit, no preexisting conditions 52 year old that died of covid.

However people want to protect themselves is fine with me.

Maybe the nights are too long up there. Didn't see any of that in the 2 grade schools I was in down here in the lower 48. Maybe other mags with kids can weigh in. Point is, I believe you but I think what you saw was not even close to being the norm. And kids will survive it easier than covid. Surely less trauma than being made to roll a wad gum you got caught chewing across the class room with your nose. The kids will be fine. Untwist your shorts.

And here we go. Today's stats in the New York Times show hospitalizations up 4% over two weeks ago. There's no reason to expect the trends to be any different this time than they have been over the last two plus years. New cases go up, then hospitalizations, then deaths.

That's truly sad, but you can't act like that's the norm or even remotely likely for the majority of young, health people. It's most likely the kid has an underlying yet unknown issue crop up that COVID probably brought to the surface and pushed him over the edge on. Kind of like when I went through AF basic training, 2 young men died while I was there. One from heart failure from which all the running put him over the edge. Another one from kidney failure from hydrating too much or something. A normal heart can take the running fine. A normal set of kidneys / small intestine can process larger amounts of water fine (needed when it's July/August in the South). These are things that never wouldve happened had they not been pushed.

Again, the loss of the young scout or those young servicemen (and countless more who die in training all the time) is heart breaking, but it happens. We can't keep from living because there are sadly people who lost the genetic (or viral) lottery.
