I read a story in the New York Times a couple months ago about going to Aspen "on the cheap," which the story admitted was relatively speaking. I think the author was from Chicago and he said it won't seem ridiculously expensive to people who already live in expensive places. So true. I don't even blink at $8 pints of beer anymore.Quote:

PreCovid Aspen had a thriving bar menu scene. Same food as the dining room, 40-50% off. Great deals and good place to meet people. Very social.
Covid closed a bunch of long time restaurants and they were replaced by ultra high end places from Miami, NY and St. Barts.
Some of them are finally starting to throw the locals a bone via either a bar menu or Prix Fix.

Soupzz On is one of the best lunch deals going. Downstairs Deli, Breck brewery workman's lunch, Sancho's fish tacos, Castaways. That's all I got for lunch. I'll eat Giams any time of day. Used to get gift cards for there on the regular. Bangkok HB does kinda suck.Quote:

Fraser Valley Hot Dog - consistently good probably the best burger in town, eat inside at the Hideaway Brewery.
Denos - OK for bar menu, otherwise its just an American Bistro. Food is good but the menu is plain.
Pepes - fuck your $30 fish tacos and $20 margs in the strip mall
Sharkys - best upvalley breakfast, busy, call in a Hardhat to Go
Fishers - Friday Fish Fry is awesome, everything else is below average
Azteca - good affordable Mexican, very friendly environment
Granby Garage - good menu, fair prices
Debbies - awesome burger stand
PI - best bar the the county, specials on the weekend are great
Grand Ol West - dependable comfort food
Grand Lake has way better food than the Fraser Valley. Thats were we usually go for a night out.
Back to skiing, rumor is that work on the New Pioneer (Its got a new stupid name that I can't remember) requires an access road to stay open from the base that basically crossed underneath the Eskimo, Prospector and Oly. There are cranes did up there and workers are driving up there daily. So the terrain openings may look a bit different.
My GC eats? The Ditch, Roadhouse & Sagebrush on repeat.
I'm a big fan of the midload on Wild Spur/Pioneer. Big Valley fucking sucks.
I forgot about the Ditch. The party never stops at that place it that's your think. Hundy P on Roadhouse/Sagebrush...might go to all you can eat crab legs tomorrow. Sloopy's and the Waconda are also great. Do we even have to talk about the party in Grand Lake? That town wears its hangover with pride. Get going about 10, liquid lunch at noon, back to The 'Brush by 3pm.
The summers up there are a bit much but I do love me some wintertime Grand Lake.
Same same in Crested Butte. It's even worse at the ski area, which used to have actual choices for apres. Plenty of great options if you want to spend $100-$200, but the options below that are sparse. It doesn't help that one of the owners of the Dodgers bought half the town and all his commercial property is just sitting there vacant.Quote:

Foggy, good to hear that Pepperoni's is still alive and well. Hernando's was my thing as a kid when we were up there.
The way is was explained to me was that when Winter Park got a new CEO 7ish years ago, there was an internal conversation about what was and was not on the table for changes at the ski area. The, "if you do that they'll fucking kill you" list was something like:

Replace the C Chair

I mean I like it the way it is but I don't pay the bills. I know close to nothing regarding the corporate structure of Altera but I do that by all accounts, Sky Foulkes is a pretty cool dude. People like working there, he's a skier, bumps chairs, his kid is on patrol and he actually lives here.
The story I'm passing on is that he did take the time to try and understand the place. What effect that will have on the future is unknown to me?
Beneath all the crowds and bullshit, WP is a pretty good skier frequently by a lot of pretty passionate long time skiers and there families. I hope the continues, not for me but for future generations.
