it will take someone other than the cops to figure it out. the vast majority of cops i work with are morons. they are actually unintelligent humans. i know this doesn't apply to all but it does to far too many. their training needs to be overhauled entirely from the outside. police practices aren't working.

i think training and misconduct needs to be handled at the federal level but some autonomy should remain. the reality is, all of this revolves around our mental health and addiction crises. tactical responses and tactical response training is necessary because perpetually mentally ill individuals commit mass murders. granted, the cops typically do little to nothing in these situations but sweep and clear buildings or allow the perp a means to an end through suicide by cop, but their ability to respond is still necessary. on the other hand, these tactical responses are what lead to people experiencing mental health crises or drug-induced episodes being killed. maybe a solution is within how the information given to dispatch is interpreted and relayed to officers, and how they respond accordingly. the mental health and addiction crises needs to be addressed at the federal level and it needs to addressed immediately. it needs to be addressed by scientists and mental health and drug experts, not politicians. i don't know how; it is not my job to figure out but it is somebody's and they aren't doing it.
another issue is this: it takes 13-19 months on average for joe schmo to become a cop. in norway and finland, it requires a three year bachelors degree, the first year of which is focused on the role of police in society in ethics. the second is a year of shadowing a senior officer. the third is a return to an academic setting where they learn psychology, investigations, and whatever else is required. they also complete a thesis. they undergo psychological testing to ensure that they are capable of upholding their duties and are able to be trusted with a firearm. 90% of their general populations trust the police.

america is fucked. this is a paradigmatic crisis and i don't see a viable solution anywhere in the near future. maybe that is the thing: to effect significant, lasting changes, it will certainly take years of progressive improvement. but we are rightfully upset at the current situation and want to see more immediate change. don't get me wrong, immediate changes need to be made and they will most definitely save lives and that will be significant progress, but the lasting and most significant changes will come over time and i think we will have to accept that.

Don't be so literal. I'm not suggesting to dart people. I'm suggesting that if we can figure it out for wild animals we can figure it out for people. Except we care more about grizzly bears than poor Black people.

When all else fails and your only other option is to use lethal why not dart them?

Darting people is not a solution to anything unfortunately. Wild animals absolutely do die from overdoses or complications of tranquilizers, and they often take a while to take effect. I don't think theres such a thing as a semi auto dart gun, and penetration issues with clothing are probably also going to be a thing.

I agree our tv and movies glorify killing and worse, trivialize it, but I don't think trying to control that is an answer either, its just a symptom of something bigger.

In my twig pig days, we were trained to carry a pack of smokes, and offer one when dealing with individuals that were under stress. Worked very well, both for the intended use, and in gifting when entering on indigenous camps. It was amazing how quickly that fix of nicotine would de-escalate a confrontation.

We also value saftey, certainly reasonable but not actual saftey but rather the perception of saftey. We are safe, America is a great place to live, there has never been a better time to be alive, in every possible metric now is the safest best time to be alive. Yet we act as if the opposite was true. You have X % of the population that is convinced the 60's were way safer although they were considerably more dangerous, you have x% of the population that is convinced a rapist, kidnapper, murder, pedo is right around the corner waiting for a 1/4 second slip up to steal their kid and rape their family even though all of that is just incredibly rare. Never mind that they will drive all over hell talking to their bff suzy on a cell phone while doing 70 in a 45 paying zero attention. This is driven by basic ways in which the human brain works and because big surprise lots of people make lots of money if your a scared little POS, driven to crazy positions on issues by nothing more than delusional fear. We all colectivelyh shit our pants over a bunch of dumb farmers from the ME to the tune of trillions of dollars and 100000's of lives but can't get 10 dollars for shit that actually improves our situation because you know socialism or something else stupid.

That shit is hard right so we aren't going to do it. It's way easier to have racist old white guys pretend the problem is poor black males are for white SJW's to pretend all cops everywhere are racist shitholes hell bent on shooting everyone. They are both and neither.

What we can do that is quick, painless and will help to some degree is one body cameras for urban police officers. This helps everyone including the officers. Two stop selling them our surplus military equipment, the military for all it's faults is a well trained, disciplined force who actually understands what is going on a far higher level than the police. If an army dude in Iraq points his gun at someone it's because he's going to shoot them, here in America you have johnny fucking I got C's through high school and have a tiny dick waving tricked out surplus military gear at everyone and anyone.
