New Season, New Tires, New Thread

This thread should be renamed the maxxis retro tire index and guide to multiple flats.
I found the contis better in every metric than any maxxis combo. Currently on vee tire flow and attacks. Theyre better than maxxis in grip, cornering and braking , better protection , super ez tubeless mount and sealing. Not as fast rolling as the contis and theyre heavier. Loose steep dh trails the flow snap/attack combo are hard to beat. Flow snap is a wide 2.5, wider than the attack 2.5. The krypto and argatals, depending on purpose are probably the most dialed . Weight, durability and rolling are an impressive balance on the contis for a dh tire. Those 2.4 contis are probably the best choice for my all ariund dh/emtb usage but i cant help but think how good a 2.5 flow snap(gravity core) front and rear would be on boulder mt dh trails in revy

well Maxxis do come OEM on a lot of bikes, I was on a large group ride where I counted 8 out of 9 were on Maxxis

perhaps they just lack imagination

What's the conti equivalent to something like a Rekon? I like my Kryptotal, but that's a way more aggressive tire.

Have a bike that came with 2.35 Ikon Exo/MaxxSpeed/120tpi (just measured at 2.36 on my 30mm rims) and I'd like to go one step up in grip.

Was looking at those Jenson discount OEM 2.4 Rekon Exo/MaxxTerras, but the description says 60tpi--which implies they are not the WT/Wide Trial version I'd want for my 30mm rims.

Cross king maybe?

I dunno about Rekon, but they've got the Xynotal which looks Dissector-ish. Presumably without the "only lasts 2 weeks" bit.

I had a set of krptocals and an argotal. They lasted well but thats probably because low vert east coast now. Im using less than 1/4 of the brake pads i was using in revy. Rear krypto and argo both had about 2500km. The krypto on the front had 5000km and still had life. Vert might be the indicator though.
I cant see the vee tires lasting any longer. Center knobs seem fairly soft

Every time I get imaginative, I end up back on maxxis in a month or two.

I do want to try the new contis though. They seem interesting.

Yes. It looks fine after 95 Moab miles.

I think Conti is missing out on the Downcountry/light trail tire segment right now. I started the season on Cross/Race Kings and pushed them into super rocky stuff when the alpine melted out (Snowbird, PowMo, etc.) and they didn't hold up very well (on my XC hardtail, so not pushing them super fast, just lots of sharp rocks, etc.) My 14 YO son had the same results. I tried some Vittorias - they have some good beefed up XC tire options. I ran the Mezcal and Barzo the rest of the season and they are holding up pretty well.

I've got a DH Super Soft Kryptotal on the rear of my ebike with ~800 miles on it, and it's still got a lot of life left. I usually bin Maxxis MT in less than half that mileage.

What’s funny is the Ruban looks like a Rekon-esque pattern, plus taller cornering knobs than center knobs like the Minion SS. But then they didn’t put black chili on it and market it as an urban gravel riding tire that can be bought in 2.3 or 2.6” widths? Seems odd.

i did have a new defective high roller maybe 18 yrs ago on a new bike which was replaced

Xynotol is like a half worn out Kryptotal. Fast and good for bike parky stuff.

I finally found some new Conti tires, Argotal 2.4 Trail Endurance…not ideal, but the tread looked interesting. Cutty test in the street and grass on 30mm rims at the same psi I run Maxxis EXO/EXO+ 22.5F/24R yielded significant sideknob flex and buzz, but rolling resistance felt surprisingly good.
Rode them last night for an hour at Test Tracks, increased psi to 24f/26r. Test tracks doesn’t really have any rocks, but has a few roots and a million turns, flat and bermed. A group ride in costumes at night isn’t really a definitive test condition, but no complaints so far and they roll way faster than we all thought looking at the tread. When I hit turns at kinda normal speeds, grip felt good and predictable, way better than the Nobby NiCs- (which were the last non-Maxxis tires I rode here). When I got offline in the dark and had to make panic moves, there was plenty of good grip too.
I’ll try and get them on some rocks and loose stuff this weekend.
On the biz side of things, QBP is taking over distribution of Conti in the US from Highway 2, so availability should get a lot better by next spring. But there is also going to be fairly ruthless MAP enforcement and int’l sales boundaries so that’s good for dealers and a bummer for price shoppers. They still look to be cheaper than Maxxis at MSRP/MAP.

Lots on conti where i ride. Dhf/assi summer shorty in winter with DHR up back is as good as it could ever get.

Very Conti curious, especially Kryptotal, which are becoming more prevalent. I’ve run the old Trail Kings in the past and was kinda meh on them.

To the question about Conti’s compared to Rekon, the closest would by X-king which a bunch of us ran BITD, but none of us do anymore. I also liked the race king for what it was, but both are outmatched by the Maxxis equivalents in that space IMO. Like the Ikon/Ardent Race/Rekon more than Race King, and an Ardent 2.4 (non race) more than an X-King up front personally. Vittoria Mezcal is a great rolling rear w more grip cornering than you’d think. Haven’t ridden one but few buddies like Syerra for Downcountry use as well.

Damn, that sounds pretty good. I just had softs. Ive had a hard time finding super softs inline. I was wanting to put one up front.
On another note im thinking the vee tires i gave may be in the super soft category. Maybe 1000km and it looks like wear is starting. I think theyre 45 durometer straight across the knobs, not positive though. That may be the effect adding to the slower rolling speed. Maybe its that the contis roll so well.No complaints though. They hook up and were dirt cheap and ez to mount. I may buy some spares because of that. Eyeing their 2.6's in the enduro casing as well

Might be missing something but Planet Cyclery/CO Cyclist appears to have CHEAP 29" DHRIIs and Ass Dudes. Not certain that they're WT, and compound is unknown on the Ass Man but everything else lines up. I took the gamble in a big way - we'll see what shows up.

I thought Maxxis WT was for 35mm inner rim widths? Are people running them on 30s? How's performance vs. the standard version?

When WT first came out, maxxis was saying they're optimized for 35mm rims, but I think they've scaled back on that and now recommend them for pretty much any modern ~30mm rim. Maxxis doesn't even make a non-wide trail 2.5" anymore (at least not in the standard minion / assegai options).

Got my Jenson OEM tire order today, they are all white label as expected, and the widths are all marked 'WT' + the weights match up with the current Maxxis spec charts, so these
appear to be 'new' stock. If you need some tires these are hard to beat at $35-$50 (plus free shipping over $50)...

Seems like more than a few racers have proto casing maxxis dh tires. Looks like theyre addressing the problem. Id expect a weight gain

everyone at a bike park I regularly ride (Dyfi- Athertons pushing them hard) is on Conti. I ran the Kryps on my trail bike for a while, i got them cheap. good for the summer but they don't shed mud so great.
