The 09 is an IQ chassis, this gets complicated so try and keep up.

If you actually want to go dick around on sleds the newer chassis are MUCH better. for Poo it goes IQ>Pro>Axys>Matryx, with probably IMO the biggest step up being from IQ to Pro.

Another big thing to think about is EFi, I don't think that 09 700 has EFi. Carbs suck, its a worthy upgrade to not have to deal with them, especially as you start getting stuck higher up and having to roll your sled, etc.

That said 2k for that sled is a deal, and if you're just using it for cabin access it doesn't matter as much. 4 feet of blower everything is getting stuck if you don't know how to ride it.

All great information everyone. I tried to find a website that went over the chassis generations of the Polaris but couldn't find any website that went over how it went chronologically so thanks for that info yukonrider.

Appreciate the info as to why axys it great - good to the why. I posted on another form and the general consensus from a poster was that more modern 'rider forward sleds' were introduced in these years: Polaris was 2011, Ski-doo was a little earlier 2008, Arctic Cat 2012.

It seems if you want to get and play with the big boys you have to spend the money and for now I'm not doing that and don't feel like shelling out for 5k mile 2016 and newer sled.

So yeah, what everyone is saying is true - buy the newest sled you can afford, and newer sleds handle much better in deep snow.

But if your budget is $2k, your budget is $2k. And I don't think you're going to find a much better/newer sled for $2k than that Dragon 700 (provided they are reliable, which I just don't know).
When I rode that 09 Dragon 800, I also rode it back to back with an 08 Summit and a 14 Summit.
The 14 Summit is the best handling in deep snow (duh). The Dragon would turn in pretty much just as easily, but would kind of hit a lean angle where it didn't really want to turn more. I could get it to do so but it needed some extra input. The 08 Summit was a bit more difficult to get on edge to begin with but handled pretty similarly to the Dragon once you got it turning.
All of the above are way easier to ride than my 05 M7. Unfortunately I have not had the pleasure of riding anything newer than the Summit XMs.

Will it be as good as a more modern machine? Of course not. But you'll be able to have fun on it, especially if you know some folks to go out with and learn.

I’m late to the party but I’ve had two of those, and I’d say it’s probably great for the use you describe- its fuel injection, probably has reverse, the 700 has plenty of power and less likelihood of grenading than an 800. Be aware though; they mapped the fuel delivery pretty lean in the midrange for emissions testing so you might add just a bit of oil to the fuel, and be sure to ride like a madman with widely varying throttle to keep the oil pump delivering. Sitting at midrange throttle for a while will make it run lean Nd take out motor guts.

Thanks for the all opinions but I did buy it. Won't see it for a few more weeks. Of course if it sucks and I am feeling spendy (I'm not) I can always sell and grab a newer sled.

My ski partner and I just bought our first starter-sled. We are total jongs and have no idea wtf we are doing.

It’s a 2004 arctic cat m1 800. 164” track. A bunch of new suspension parts. New belt (+ new spare) and new plugs. Track is in good shape with only a few gacks. The seller was the lead mechanic and one of the auto dealership and is a total sledneck. It was cheap ($1000, so $500 each)

We took it out last weekend and it fkn rips.

We won’t be using it to braaaaap up pow fields (though the seller says it pretty much keeps up with his buddies with $$$ sleds). We are using it to access ski terrain that is mostly up jeep roads. We tried to get it up a side canyon that one (skilled) dude on a timber sled had gone up in ~ 2’ of heavy snow and found the limit of our skills and the sled almost immediately. (StuckAF)

Some questions:

Tips on getting it un-stuck when we auger it in?

What’s a good cheap ski-holder?

It doesn’t have reverse. We see there are reverse kits available. Are they worth it?

The seat is torn but the foam is in great shape. I’m pretty good with a commercial sewing machine so I think I can fix it, unless there’s a solution?Guerrilla Tape?)

Riding tandem through unconsolidated powder isn't gonna work often. You need to build a road first.

The primary lesson is being patient. That goes for getting unstuck as well. Think through your plan before executing it.

When you're stuck you're stuck. After a point you are just making it harder to get unstuck. If its steep, just roll it over. If its flat, and consolidated that sucks. Roll it in its side, pack some snow under the track, then roll it the other way and repeat. If the snow is firm enough you can try and GENTLY walk it out with a combo of throttle and ski pulling.

I effing hate yanking sleds, so I almost always dig mine out, but I know buddies who never dig, so there are many ways to do it. If you're gonna get stuck in the flat a lot, a sno-bunji works well.

Tech thank you for being another JONG just like me so I don't have to be only one jonging up the thread with dumb questions

- Seat : I read on another forum that ZIP tape works well. It's the tape for taping seems on sheething panels for a house. I have a bunch leftover from a cabin I built so I"m going to try that on mine

- Reverse is so dam nice but I only use it on hard pack trails. $200 and an easy install would be my price for that personally.

- 2 up - Get a second sled. They seem to be getting cheaper now at seasons ending :)
