Just got home from an Airstream rally and those old boys (we are usually at least 20 years younger than the group) had their shit dialed and polished.

I take pride in my things. I try to keep up on it all; rigs, gear, home, yard et al. But try as I might little shit just happens. Just got done washing the Airstream and there is sap all over it from a spot on the beach we camped this summer, and the truck well it needs a whole cut and polish. Clay bar, instant detailer, bug and tar, nothing touched the sap. I am going to have a real project and need to research what will get it off because the clear coat on an Airstream is not like a car, it’s called plasti-coat, so that’s a future me problem.

I grew up with a dad who’s shit was always broken, always dirty, always fucked up, so maybe I am just not raised right to really keep shit dialed? Maybe it’s a time thing because we are always going and always moving from one thing to the next? Maybe it’s a money thing and I have just enough to have nice things, but not really, really take care of them and hire professionals for help when needed? When we do hire things out, we never get an A+ product, our house for instance when we had it built 18 years ago; and there is all kinds of little shit wrong with it. We weren’t like on the contractors, you know like always over the shoulder and saying, “that’s not good enough,” like our older more experienced neighbors. Same with my old truck we had all the body and paint done 13 years ago and the fucker is rusting out on me now. Is there a way to be demanding and still nice about it?

Maybe I just need to reset my expectations because well, life happens and things are really just tools? I had a hunting buddy/mentor once empty his shotgun and just start throwing it on the ground, after I had worried about my own new gun getting a scratch, and he just kept yelling at “it’s a fucking tool.”

Maybe 20 years from now when there are no kids in the house and I am retired with time on my hands it will be easier? Maybe my shit is actually nice and I just see all the little imperfections because it’s my own shit? Maybe I should just buy less stuff and make sure it stays nice?

I should probably drink a beer and be thankful for what I have, and that we got home safe after having a fun weekend; it’s just things and they really are just tools, right?

Can you all talk me off the cliff again. All right I am embracing the “just tools” sentiment. Just accidentally broke a Christmas platter from a set gifted by my mom just before dying of cancer. Grumbled a bit but whatever.

I got a real problem now though. Roofs fucking leaking. Just discovered today by wife, I was on the hill. Water on the ceiling of the first story.

We delayed our annual roof cleaning and maintenance so our neighbors could finally get off their wallets and cut the huge cedar trees that were trying to eat our house. We were being patient because we like these neighbors. They are good people. It was the mega asshole owner before them that planted these fucking trees because they were fast growing and he didn’t like me and knew he would be dead before they caused him any trouble. He’s dead now. So we get the roofers scheduled. They are coming 12/30. Now here’s the real kicker. Go into the attic (it’s been less than a year since I was up there) and sure as shit we got black and wet sheeting. So it’s not going to just be a shingle or two out of place.

Other neighbors just had their roof done too and the others across the street. Same company all roofed them originally. All the same shingles cause HOA going to HOA. All supposed to be 30year. None made it to 20.

So chatted with the contractor while they were on the neighbor’s job and he tells me all of his guys hope we don’t hire them to roof our place. It’s steep, it’s two-story, it’s hipped, it has lots of valleys.

Just had a good talk with wife. We know it’s just stuff and we will burn our savings we will get it fixed. Will call tomorrow and see if they can come earlier than scheduled.

Irony. Talked to my dad tonight too. He is having car troubles and says to me “everything I touch turns to shit.”

My conclusions, being a first gen middle class is difficult because we don’t know what we don’t know. We have to build the network. We have to learn who is the “right guy” for each job. We can’t just get help from our folks. Anyone there with us, keep battling. Anyone out there taking care of eod your people and helping them do life, good on you.

Anyway the kids and pets are healthy. I hope you all are having a merry holiday season.

I got news for you, as first gen middle class you probably know a lot more about stuff than the average rich person. I get you about hiring stuff out, though. We can afford to hire out a lot of stuff we do ourselves because we are more likely to do it right--as long as it's something that requires effort and care but not a lot of technical knowledge and specialized tools. That stuff we know to hire out but we've been homeowners for 50 years so you learn.

A lot of stuff that happens to stuff you just have to let go. A leaking roof is not one of those things. Good luck with it.

If you can’t get an insurance claim you obviously are on the hook for the roof.
Black mold on attic sheathing ain’t fun. But not something you can’t do. A pump sprayer with microban or shockwave is better than bleach. You can do both. Bleach just makes the mold disappear. But it comes back

Or. Encapsulation. Cover it with binz primer. A sprayer is easier than a brush and roller. But both work.

PS. You can actually glue ceramics. The crack will always be there. But it’s a platter not a soup bowl.

I am going to avoid a claim at all costs. We just switched carriers and I don’t want dropped; try and save the “protection” for if it chances to burn to the ground.

I had success with Bora Care a couple times on wet RV floors. If we start tearing shit apart I will definitely spray the area down. I was looking at the blackening more and I think, fingers crossed, it is more discoloration because it’s not slimy. Definitely soft and wet though and might need taken out.

Looking at the leak location on the first story, it could also be the kitchen or bath vents.

Waiting on daylight to actually see if there is anything to be seen. Also, calling the roofers to see if they have availability today.

Rotten floors and roofs are the things that my nightmares are made of, so I need to remember not to worry about the stupid shit, take that off the plate. Like the plate that broke; glue best I can and move on.

Anyone used Turo to rent performance cars? There's a Lambo in Portland for $800/day as well as a bunch of less premium sports cars. I don't have anywhere to park a nice car anyway, really like the idea of renting something fun for the weekend and then giving it back

I wouldn't be that much of a dick, I've spent too long bike commuting for driving like an asshole to have any luster. But as an Outback owner, the idea of being able to, say, pass on a 2-lane road is pretty appealing.

There's a Corvette C8 on Turo here that's about $200/day with a note that there's a $250 fine if you take it to a track day. So, less than $500 to rent a car and take it to track day? It's a steal!

Did Horizon air start charging for alcoholic drinks? I can't find anything online, but has a Horizon flight after NY and they charged for drinks. Got a free one on a Horizon flight last fall. Didn't find any info online.

Don't put it on anything. Take it to Antiques Roadshow. It's worth a lot more in mint condition. Probably less than a Mantle rookie card though.

I was trying to fix another web browser problem on my PC last week, so cleared the cache, and ever since then when I use Google Maps the icons don't appear. The funny thing is clearing the cache didn't fix the other problem either. The same behavior occurs on both the Chrome and Edge browsers.

My guess is clearing the cache cleared those images from the cache, but I don't understand why they wouldn't reload when I refresh the web site. I haven't noticed this for any other site. Just plain weird.

I've done a fair amount of cache clearing lately and it hasn't seemed to help any of the problems.

Woke up at a hut on Sunday with one of my ears stopped up. Can't for the life of me get it unstopped, and my hearing is shitty enough as it is.

Anyone got a foolproof remedy to un-stop my left ear?

A bug might have crawled in there overnight in the hut, and then died.

Hey, it's possible.

Try some warm olive oil in the outer ear canal. Might have a chunk of earwax stuck next to the drum. The oil might soften it up enough to release.

Or el Chup is right- you got an earwig taking up residence. You fucked.

There's also over the counter ear wax drops, any drugstore or Walmart will have them. A few drops in the ear, then get in the shower and run hot water into your ear.

The wax-encrusted bug should rinse right out.

The only remedy is to go to a lower elevation. I'll be happy to fill in for you at the hut. Where is it?

I'm already 6000' lower and my ear is still stopped up.
