If this was San diego riders would just ride on either side of the armored tread. Rocks are scary, ya know?

That thought definitely entered my mind. What's that old saying? Jerry proof something and the world builds a better jerry
One of the most frustrating/addicting things to me about building is that no matter what you 'want' people to do, there is always just one line that forms.. and if people are cutting rogue trail.. ya done fucked up somewhere. How do you build it so your way is 'the way'? That's the challenge.
We do have two other rock roll steep sections like this already, so it shouldn't catch people too off guard. tho neither are as friendly as this one, with the stones faced up to the tread and the ride line pretty smooth. The rocks don't totally fill the V ditch that they replaced so it's still the natural low spot. I think what we have to out advantage is how old and rode in these trails are, 'the way' has already been beaten in. One other thing I can share that in my opinion really helps with builds like this, at least for our mineral dirt here in the San Juan, is build as much as you can with the largest materials you have, big stones, then as you work down the trail work smaller rocks and stones into the gaps, in steeps they just naturally fall into place, then as you come thru with dirt separate it into gravel and lastly the fines and if you do it that way everything binds together super solid and also helps a ton with
drainage.
Here's one more pic I got, looks pretty friendly to me.. but what do I know:confused:

That green just blows my mind.
You know it. I've been doing rake and rides through the forest this year and as it beds in then we reshape the trail.
That's how Sharon created this trail we worked on which she called Greenland. Since then there's Iceland, Cambodia and others around this particularly green forest
Moved the boulder (red X pic) out of the middle of this new line. 6' breaker bar and gravity did all the work.
Gaining on the new trail. The landowner called the new trail "gnarly" and is requesting B lines. There's only so much we can do with a valley for terrain.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bed2a25965.jpg
Looking down. Rides nice and smooth.

manipulating human behavior is what i enjoy most about trailbuilding... idk what that says about me though haha
here is my most recent manipulation attempt
this is the end of a small jump line, the intent was to turn right, the riders decided instead to go up and over the feature and into the berm on the other side, which is the end of a separate jump line, these lines should not merge... and i got sick of watching close calls with kiddos

nice to see the stoke in this thread staying active!
For sure, and with a completely new trail design it’s like you are programming an experience. That can hopefully be replicated over and over. So many factors like terrain and weather that get in your way and it never comes out ‘perfect’ but when it does come together and you get it right it Goddamn does it feel good.
Nice work on the reroute, that is not a minuscule amount of dirt to move by hand
Sometimes building takes twice as long as expected. This one boulder appeared like we'd be able to move it fairly quick and it ended up taking forever! Buried way deep and wedged by other buried deep boulders. Finally got it and the backside was flat so now it's a sidewalk. Gaining.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b20af56a97.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bf05342bec.jpg
As much as I like building trails, it's really annoying when riding them that my mind focuses on fixing the "shit" instead of enjoying the ride. Today I fixed a corner that has sucked ever since I first made it. Instead of being annoyed, I'll be happy on this turn now. Yeah! no pics, it wasnt that type of dig day, just some watering and basic maintenance on the local djs to keep things running along
but today was important
ive mentioned how fun it is to design trail features and manipulate how people ride them, creating an experience for the user as a reward, but theres another reward to trail building, the volunteers
today a local neighborhood kid came out to volunteer, i ran into him earlier in the week and mentioned a few of us would be out sunday morning to get some work done, and he wanted to come out and help
i was working on buttering up a crumbling berm which is kind of an experience required job, so put him to work digging a whole for a "wrong way" sign i wanted to install at the end of the track
everyone else had head out after the midday heat crept in so it was just the two of us finishing up installing the sign
as we tamped in the sign we were just chatting about random crap, when he mentioned my fitbit and that he had got one recently and was trying to do his 10,000 steps each day
this kid is what one might call "husky", and has only recently gotten into bikes, from how much he talked about it he really enjoys fortnite... but he understands he needs to be healthy and is trying to get more active
it was refreshing to hear and i was starting to feel some optimism for societies future in a time of craziness, but what he said next kind of got to me
he said, "ive lost 10 pounds last month from riding here", and "its so much fun i want to come every day", as well as "i love this park, i will help volunteer whenever i can"
i just about melted...
this is why we do what we do, a kid, overweight, local to the park, gets off his ass, finds some confidence and builds some ego, takes pride in volunteering and helping take care of what he uses, this is the real goal
today was good
Seconded. That is awesome!
I really enjoy the walkers on the trails as well. People outside in the woods is a good thing and it's a good community bond imo. Everyone needs an outlet in nature even if they don't know it.
Busted arse today moving rock. I'm spent! Slowly but surely we keep gaining on the new trail. Think it will end up almost a mile when done...and it will be a biatch of a mile.
Always amazing to hear when the younger generation take pride and love into the trail aspect of it all. I remember asking a kid riding a new trail that was built if he liked it and his response was yes and I helped build it.
Finally got some rain again late last week that put enough moisture in the soil to shape. I wanted to fix up a little drop on my neighborhood trail- just throw 10-12 buckets of dirt on top of the landing to extend it back and up to make it a little more forgiving. Went to the spot where i stash my tools and the bucket/rake/shovel were gone. Bummer. Hopefully its some folks starting a new trail in those woods and not a super-citizen or City worker confiscating them.
the thing I like about the young dudes on the trails I talk to. They don't care about internal rim width or how much travel or what grips/dropper/rubber compound etc etc. The little fuckers just ride on anything old bmx with no tread on tyres and a barely working back brake, sisters girly bike cos he bust his up last week and got to save up to get it fixed. They're just down there loving it

I found this TTB vid of the trail we just finished building a few weeks back.
I'd post up pics on here but my computer won't take photos from my phone and for some odd reason I can't log on to this forum using my phone.
This is the New Heart Trail here in Flagstaff. It's about 4 miles in length and descends 1500 or so feets of vertical. It took us 14 months to get completed. It was hand built and there was some monster bench cutting across 100% cross slopes. It's been a great experience but I'm glad we are done. :D

Worked this so it is now rideable "up" also. We added a B-line around the whole knoll to keep everyone happy on this "sanctioned" trail.

Anybody familiar with the story on the adoption of the Teton Pass DH trails? Looking at some similar issues here in CA, and wondering how they pulled it off. PM me if it needs to be private. Thanks y'all!
Finished our new trail yesterday. Ended up .85 miles. Fairly techy and it was built as an UP primarily. Psyched to get it burned in.
I guess were really never finished. A lot of rock work today to make it better. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5727af65e3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...21181b0c62.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5395ca46d9.jpg

Adding offshoots that couldn't be worked into the flow of the new trail. Not a big fan of doing this, but the terrain dictates sometimes and it's too fun to not utilize it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f846b657ac.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2802cbe0d2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9c994d195e.jpg
Are you going to fill that in for a berm, or let bike tires cut in a catch berm/rut? I think a few A-line and B-line options spread out on a trail are great- its a chance for progression and can give a trail different character depending on your mood that day. Looks like good dirt through there.
I'm not completely sure of the plan here. This line jumped out at me because it looked like a little mini couloir, so I raked it! Essentially what you see is I had dug up those rocks to make the right turn and set them over there with thoughts of potentially a berm, but I'm slightly fearful that it will be a water trap. But it's super fast and I think a berm, well I know, a berm would be super helpful and more fun. Straight below the rocks is the actual new trail barely visible in one pic. Heading hard right (where I want to go) leads to a doable up of more offshoot drops and A-lines that could not be worked into the flow of the trail. We're in a steep gully here and I'm trying to maximize all the multiple drop tech lines in this little zone. Meeting the rest of my crew this weekend to figure it all out. We have more to the left that needs to be worked as well. Fun little puzzle.

^^^ nice. What saw are you running in the mill?
I'm not sure the model number, a pro grade stihl though. I was cutting the planks into decking with that husqvarna and setting them as well as some of the dirt work. You can see the milling going on in the upper left of that pic. It's definitely hard on the saw and the body, but comes out looking awesome.
That's some pro build man!
Thanks! To say it's been a challenging season would be an understatement. Crew cut in half and basically no budget, we've been able to get creative and pull off some pretty amazing builds. Hopefully the faucet stays on and they keep funding more trail here, our little bike park is off to a pretty solid start.
built up a landing that most of us were landing to flat. Dig season starts for my gang now the dirt is permanently damp. gona start a new trail I'll keep posting with progress Attachment 342123Attachment 342124

Continued on this rock berm line today and cleaned up some others.
This one is going to take more time to get dialed. Pushed it back about 3' today. Think we'll bench more, build more of berm once the line is figured out. She'll take time and patience.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8cb551ba14.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9b2b9d004a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...33a949d02b.jpg

Well, we're starting a new trail and we're about to use heavy equipment for the first time in building some berms. I'm nervous! The trail is going to have typical hand build stuff, but we have sections that the owner wants full machine made berms...because he has the machines!
Anybody have a good links to design? I don't want to f this all up. Thankfully we have a good small group of riders to help and one is a lift service ripper, but the line between disaster and awesome is kinda thin I think. So any info I can pass along so we're not on an island when pushing our thoughts would be helpful.
