Tahoe Weather, Conditions, Stoke, and What's Up Thread...

Well, after getting yellow-carded for skiing closed terrain at Heavenly on Saturday, my stubborn, mule-headed buddy thought he'd outsmart ski patrol and skin up to East Peak from Stagecoach yesterday to ski some untracked snow. But, he got greedy and instead of staying out of site he decided to take a ride up Dipper before heading down, and got popped again before getting to the chair. Luckily, he only got a warning this time. He did say the skiing was very good.

I just tuned up my groomers and will reside myself to skiing them for awhile.

i was always under the impression that resort mgmt could consider skiing in a closed area as trespassing, and if it really wanted, mgmt could hold the 'trespasser' for law enforcement who could then search the individual among other things.... i've observed part of this occurring many years ago in mammoth (at least that's how it was explained to me). the dude was skiing in a permanently closed area, so i'm not sure how it applies to the areas that are temporarily closed. maybe somebody here could clarify this....

Honestly, I think the reason they haven't opened is because they probably aren't staffed up yet and people other than passholders aren't going to be doing vacation weekends that weren't already planned around Thanksgiving. I hate to say it, but from a $$$ perspective it makes sense.

That and the whole Ottime timing factor.

he did absolutely nothing wrong in this case. i skin up from stage all the time and have for years, stopping and talking with mountain ops and patrol as I go. As far as i know going to the chair that way is fine too. last year i took nacho up to east peak on an almost daily basis while I did laps and ashley watched him, or vice versa.
riding a chair with a valid pass and then going back home via stagecoach raises some issues. but nothing that can't be avoided by either being careful or being nice and forthright.

permanently closed areas can result in arrest. i would under no circumstances ever allow a resort employee to search or detain me, but the sheriff will when and if he arrives and and resort employees would be well within their rights to record and confiscate any illegal substances you tried to get rid of before the sheriff arrives. then again, i don't ski in permanently closed areas. also not certain about temporary closures.

Thanks, this is good to know. I rather skin from our condos at Stagecoach until it opens rather than drive around and take the Gondola, only to ski groomers.

found what seems to be the same layer the folks in the video did on a loaded ne aspect about 9.5k at carson pass. prolly the surface hoar we found last midweek is now a layer w/ heavy slab on top. c5 q1 16" down. ski penetration isnt skiing deep enough to trigger it but its there

Comstock was turning today but no one was on it. Maybe tomorrow.

As the Dad pointed out, it's mostly because the Heave trollers don't want to have to come into the sketchy terrain & rescue you. Plain & simple. (And we do know that excellent riders do get caught out by hidden stuff in the early season!)
...At least that's what they've yelled at us in past seasons when we've been seen "exploring".

Talking of disappointment...NoStars couldn't even keep Vista running smoothly in the rain on Saturday.
You'd think with only 2 "real" lifts going, they would be able to "get 'er done".

Is anybody heading to Tahoe on Wednesday that would be interested in giving a buffoon from San Jose a ride?

i do not mean to but in, I am stoked that people have made some good turns this season at alpine and kwood. pretty stoked as it is getting too cold at the lake. anyway -

The UCD Waterski Team is hosting a benefit this year for Disabled Sports Far West. They run the incredible adaptive sports program over at Alpine and have been doing so for over 40 years. My teammates and I usually ski Alpine/Squaw, and have been impressed with their work for years. We all love the fact that we can waterski and snowski, and it is an integral part of our lives. We feel the need to recognize and support Far West because of their commitment to helping people get outside and have great new experiences.

Thus, thanks to Red Bull Media House and Brain Farm, we are hosting a free showing of "The Art of Flight" on Wednesday, November 28 at 8:30 in Rock Hall/Chem 194 on campus at UCD. It will be on a massive screen, 400 person hall, and in Blu-ray.

The screening is completely free, but we will be taking donations at the doors. We have worked hard to put together a good raffle as well. Lib Tech, Red Bull Media House and Discrete have all been incredibly supportive. we are still working on getting some lift tickets in the raffle, in addition to the new goggles, hats, and gloves that have been donated.

I invite all mags, and all interested, to join us as it should be a great night. Come support adaptive sports and see one of the best mountain sports films ever.

for the record, the fact that nobody said anything doesn't necessarily mean it was ok. the puppy was pretty cute so that definitely helped i'm sure.

as to patrol not wanting to go in there. why wouldn't they? these aren't particularly dangerous conditions and they can do it with a sled if they want. this is the kind of shit we are talking about. this is upper comet, last thursday.

Let's put it this way - the drain was open for anybody stupid enough to go in it - I was. And there were 6 other tracks and one snowboarder booting through the creek in there. The trees elsewhere had good cover and skied awesome. If opening weekend is any indication, KW will be as fun as ever. Go enjoy it before some tard lawyer takes away more of our freedom. I mean stay home!

Because it is not their job to go into closed areas. Okay, it kind of is, bit they are not planning on it. Blah, blah, blah. You know how I feel about closed areas and rules. I think we raced patrol to the boundary once because we knew they were closing down. By beating them to the sign closure, we left the resort legally an never skied back in. Had we been five minutes behind, and did the same thing, we could have lost our passes. Resorts have rules. You break them, you lose your pass. Unless you are a sweet talker or have great cleavage. If you act like a douche and challenge patrol, you lose.

I think you would agree that goin into the low tide woods, especially at the Heave, is more difficult and dangerous for patrol, than picking someone up from the groomer. And I am sure they don't have a full team working. But whatever.

Personally I feel, if you skin up from Stagecoach, an never enter the open part of the resort, it is essentially BC and you should be left alone. It does help to stay out of site.

Curious. Were you skinning up with Nacho when the lower lifts were running? Did you need a leash?

KW did not have any issue with me skinning up hill last year with a baby on my chest. In fact, two separate patrollers have me a nod and smile.

Tomorrow KW is opening chair 6 for me. I invite all mags to come and join us. Stoke meter will go to about 6.3 or so.

Ottime you staying up through the weekend? Considering making a run at it Saturday w 6 opening.

no, i stopped doing that the stage was spinning. not supposed to have the dog there and at that point he chased every skier/rider he saw. i've always said that the trees at the heave (and sierra) take more snow than kirkwood to fill in. this is mostly due to the type of rock involved

Trees at the Wood were Very workable by Sunday. Only thing left on Monday.

Yes, you have to work your way around some logs.
Yes, you will hit some wood. Maybe a rock or two.
Yes, there were some Fine turns.

Stay away from Kirkwood if you over-value your ski's bases.
Have you ever had a fun day at the Wood that did not include at least one scratch or core shot? It is equipment, not an investment. Meant to be used.

Or stay on the groomers.

Yeah TahoeBC, i'm sure you two passed us on the track and we saw you in the trees later on. 4 splitters and a local skier with the shepard was with us.

Now can you update us on the mtn biking? :) Seems possible that there are still trails up there without snow.

KW chat thread is not a bad idea. Speaking of which, what are the odds that they finally open chair 6 and it's stuck on wind hold for most of the day tomorrow? SAC forecast calling for 100mph gusts at 9k but who knows.. maybe I should just STFU and go skiing.

Yes where is the BC thread. So far this season all the goods, of which there are many, have essentially been BC, cause the old Tahoe, with early season lift access, seems to be a thing of the past.

good skiing at the cp today albeit windy. facet layer seems to have bonded better. mostly windboard yesterday on ebak but decent powder and windbuff across the street. access is still an issue there

That gal is a hoot, I first met her up on Red Lake peak while skiing with Gimpy a number of years ago. She had just set off a decent sized slab, and was pretty fired up as most us would be. That big fluffy dog is 1/2 wolf & 1/2 Shepard and a real sweetheart.

I have not been on the trails up there in two weeks, but I imagine the lower stuff is riding, prolly not worth it as a destination ride, but fun to mix a day of skiing and biking, I’ll probably get out there some time in the next few days to check things out.

re mountain biking. areas around castle rock looked okay to go and there may be some left at van sickle bi state park but that has a little more north to it. keep in mind this is me looking at it from the west so i cant see the north facing sections, which likely still hold snow. it looked good enough that i want to go climbing at castle rock

i would be wary of stuff around the flume as that area was hit by the lake effect during our colder storm.

Well, another ski buddy got stopped by ski patrol while skinning up Comet from Stagecoach yesterday. He talked to the guy for about 10 minutes and the gist of it is, the powers at be at Vail Resorts are telling them to clamp down on skiers skiing closed terrain.

It'll be interesting to see how the year progresses. Given last years lean snow pack, we spend a lot of time skiing closed terrain.

Went poking around Mt rose area the last 3 days. I was presently surprised by the conditions, lots of creamy cold turns on anything remotely n facing up high. No major signs of instability except high winds and bit of wind transport. Today we did 2 laps in the chutes at the resort, really good windbuffed pow top half and nice cold stale pow down lower. Starting to fill in nicely but still thin near the ridge.

BUT, I noticed in the "Details" it seems to say valid for "Shoulder" weekends too: Opening -12/21.

Now, the wording doesn't make it crystal clear, it is a bit garbled.
Can anyone else confirm that's what it means?

If that is so, I think we'll be heading to Squaw this Saturday!
