First time on real ski gear for the 3 yo mini-maggette this weekend. Sunday she lapped the magic carpet at Alpy 15 times. Although she is still too small (and that run too steep) for her to not be in between my legs, she was riding the carpet completely by herself and was really getting the whole pizza/fries thing.
Go Owen!
I got stoked watching junior flowing and junior acinpdx shred chair 2 all weekend. Couple of good kids you guys have.
My wife says he and I are going to some sorta Hood ski camp this summer. FKNA
Nothing wrong with racing but freestyle programs teach A LOT of technique. Your experience was with a shitty freestyle program.
Anyone use Hookease for super young kids? My wife, a snowboarder, bought a set and now I, a skier, have to figure them out. When the kid falls in front of me it's a mess to avoid. And it seems like the groomers have to be perfect so I can slide her skis around without making her fall. Easy to catch an edge. Arghhhhh....stupid well-meaning loving wife.
Alrighty then. Whatever you say. Sounds like you have young kids. Come talk to me again when they're older.
I've been closely watching many competitive junior free skiers for many seasons, many times each season as my own have come through the system. A number of my eldest's and even middle's peers are now skiing on the FWT, Cold Rush, Skiers Cup etc.
I can state unequivocally that most, not all, but most - I'd say 70%+ - of successful junior competitors have racing in their backgrounds. I am not nor have I ever been a racer or terribly fond of that culture, kids who have racing backgrounds absolutely shine technically over those that have not had that rigorous (yes boring and tedious) technical training. You can see it in the way they ski.
My kids readily acknowledge the advantages they gained from it, and the judges tend to prove this point over and over in the 'technique' category.
I want my kid to ski with them
used them at 1.5yo with my kid, I think they are great for getting them used to standing and gliding. Never had an issue with edges catching or anything, maybe you're torquing them too much, I use a real light touch when we're going downhill. Pushing the kid around on the flats doesn't work that well if youre trying to skate at the same time, but for controlling speeding and aiming them while going down I've never had any issues.
We are on the same page, racing is great. My point was you had experience with a bad freestyle program. They do or should teach technique as much as racing. I'm not going to argue which is better for a kid. I was around and indirectly involved with kids freestyle and junior freeskiing coaching for a long time, there are good and bad coaches. Mostly good though.
It's been serious low tide here in the East, but I got my one year old out for a first time. Just let him stomp around a slide down some backyard action

^^^^^^^^^ that's great stuff right there by all......Jackson is tearing it up.. ski's better than his daddy :)
Sorry, I was, for some reason feeling reactive last night! Free ride programs absolutely should teach as much technique, but many don't. Especially those that are weekend only. The more intense (residential, academy, multi-days a week for kids with easy mountain access) ones do focus on more technique because they have the time to do it, but having been pretty familiar with a bunch of programs and coaches none are as technically focused as, for example, a full time junior racing program. They teach lots of comp-specific technique, but few of the awful (and productive) drills the race programs do.
Anyway, kids skiing is great!
^^^thanks BB. If we had a boat and water up close...... ;)

Fire on the Mountain
Awesome. Is that his pedal rig? What does he like to play?
That there is a solid body electric ukelele. It's his pedal rig. He plays anything. Folk rock country blues.
His instructor doesn't do rock n roll cuz it's the Devils music. His buddies on stage do rock n roll. They did Sublime's "Saw Red" into "Fire on the Mountain" and "it's All Over Now". He opened with "Ain't She Sweet" solo. Ended set on acoustic doing "Zippity Do Dah" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane".
He's fkn rad. Love this guy.

you play with him I assume. My son's playing has evolved to the point where the house has to tell us to STFU becuase we always end up jamming acoustics in the kitchen. it really is the greatest.
hair? he's got it too. lol

I don't play.
how does a kid come to play the ukelele if dad doesn't pick? looks like a cool character.
We just were looking for something new for him to do and he's been doing uke for a year. I actually want him to do his own thing rather than what I do.
He's going to teach me uke this summer.
it just struck me as an instrument you pick up because one is in the house. like a marimba, accordion, banjo, mando, less mainstream.
It's a great way to start.
Thing 1 getting some

Big ups to NHguy for the GS boards
He said....
.....and I quote.......,
"The fucking cowbells are distracting. Will you tell those people to stop when I'm racing?"
....
Taught himself Charlie Daniels' "Long Haired Country Boy" and John Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" tonight. I sing with him. We also worked on Black Sabbath "Children of the Grave".
MMP. how old is that lad?
He is my oldest and a senior in college. He's 22 and a real sweetheart. Killer tele skier. Backflips and so forth.
That is a killer race shot. The framing in the panel gate is so cool. Plus he has a sick angles.

Wowzers! You done good Dad.
Owen said "That guy looks cool. I want to meet him."
So Mommy's not happy with my choices but Friday's plan is to fuck off school and go ski corn then head up to the Cowboy's compound and play some music. I have not had a day off to freeski with him yet this season.
Seriously, what are they going to do on the Friday before a three day weekend? Pass out Valentine cards? Bullshit.
