Shitty news about Prof Sid Watkins.
If you have access to the Velocity cable channel on your system, there is an excellent documentary running right now (with repeats) about the killer years (for drivers) of the late sixties and seventies. Jackie Stewart is interviewed (along with many), and describes his famous accident at Spa and he comedy of errors following that accident that almost killed him twice.
It's called Grand Prix - The Killer Years.
Drivers championship:
1. Alonso 179
2. Hamilton 142
3. Kimi 141
4. Vettel 140
Three points covering 2nd 3rd and 4th. I had no idea Kimi was so close. And if you believe Hamilton can win it, then you have to believe Kimi or Seb can win it. Shaping up to be an awesome end to the season.
On another note, these gearbox penalties are starting to get aggravating. I think they ruin the race chances for competitive drivers through no fault of their own. How about a constructor's points penalty? Something to keep drivers and races competitive.
US TV coverage going to NBC next year. Speed channel being re-branded as a general sports channel.
Sucks.
If I have to get decent coverage (BBC/Sky) illicitly over the web it might just be enough to make me cut the cable TV cord altogether....
Supposedly NBC/NBCSports intend to broadcast all of the races live. At least where I currently live NBCSports = HD, speed = some pixelated garbage thats maybe 160p. I can't stand the Speed commentators, it can't get worse
With what Speed turned into, who'll miss it and it's bad reality programming? Now another general sports network ala ESPN needs a vomit icon, but that's seperate
I get HDSpeed (although their surround sound balance is always fucked up for F1 coverage) and can tolerate, even enjoy Hobbs and Mattchet (a Brit thing?). Could do without Varsha races that Diffey covers for him are better IMO.
Agreed most of Speed content is pap but I really can't see anyone stepping up to provide (the amazing) LeMans24, GP2, Aussie V8, MotoGP and other racing coverage they provide among the stupid Fosse hot rod rebuild my ride shows and endless NASCAR wankerey. I'm sure NBC will dumb down coverage/commentary anyway... like Speed do to a degree when FOX carries the races a few times a year.
And Speed... is being turned into a fucking baseball channel.
Need to investigate getting a good feed from SKY/BBC. Will miss the ease of just DVRing it.
I am hope full the NBC sports coverage is going to be decent. Sounds like they might have more live coverage then Speed did.

"I feel that they will promote Formula One to a level not seen before in the United States."
NBC will air four races – the Canadian Grand Prix in June, and the final three races of the season in November – while the remaining 16 races will air on NBC Sports Network. All practice and qualifying sessions will also be on the cable station.
Not many people get BeIn.... yet. They've sewn up a bunch of the North American rights already (see Friday's US World Cup qualifier that was only on BeIn, as well as El Classico rights, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, BarcaTv) who knows, the live sports bubble's going to pop soon enough and it'll get ugly. I've comcast so they'll shove their shitty NBC stuff down the throats, the rest who knows. The death of GolTv can't come soon enough though.
Bids for the U.S. rights are due at the end of the week. If beIN win that'll put serious pressure on all the cable providers that haven't picked up the channel yet.
I liked the commentators on Speed. Wish NBC would broadcast more than 4 races.
Was getting fed up with Speed as you're paying for a subscription and many times, they're only showing the race
at 7:30 am with no replay later in the day.
Everytime I see this thread it reminds me of this old trip hop song I used to love on long road trips. Not the best vid, but cool use of Formula 1 engines winding out in the intro.
Formula 1 and now Prem League. NBC is on a spending spree.

Tomorrow's race should be good.
on the topic of doping in motorsport (no reason posting in the Armstrong thread, it'd just be lost there)

Damn, what a race! Best of the season so far?
And kimi on the radio... :D
So is anybody going to Austin?
I really wanted to, but my gig fell through for it and my usual publication isn't high enough end to get creds. Hopefully next year I can cover it.
What a great season.... right to the very end.
Alonso's driving this year has put him in among the very greats of the sport.
Great end to a great season. Brasil was the best race of the year, IMO. Loved the on/off rain and the suspence of who would pit when, and for what tire. Force India in the lead was really cool to see, would have loved to see them make it to the podium.
I have a feeling NBC is going to be really disappointing next season. They will bring all the usual sportscaster, add a colorman or two, and be bland all year. The Speed F1 team had a passion for the sport that will be hard to replace.
I've heard people complain about the Speed commentators- I thought they were excellent. Really experienced people.
Great seeing Button finish the year with a win.
I'm very (perhaps pleasantly?) surprised NBC are taking Hobbs and Matchett.
I really expected them to "sex up" the coverage rather than stick with their two old farts chatting during an F1 race in the pub format.
Keeping Hobbs hopefully means that We don't have to suffer Derek Daly in the ex-driver role.
Yup. I'm happy to see Varsha go.

Has anyone seen any promotional stuff from NBC about their F1 coverage? They don't seem to be making much of acquiring rights. I heard that no Friday coverage is planned?
They don't even appear to have half way decently formatted F1 web page yet http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/3159563/
nothing eh? Guess you're stuck watching nascar instead. So sad
NBC Sports had a F1 preseason show on last night and has replayed at least once already(DVR has recorded it twice now).
Coverage starts next Thursday with practice 1 followed by practice 2 live then qualifying and the race are all broadcast live.
Some of the promotional ads they have:

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/228251...32894#50810118
The preseason show wasn't bad, but it might just have been because I can now watch it in 1080HD instead of uber compressed pixelated SD
Good to know they're doing something. I'll look out for pre-season show.
Good chance I am going to Montreal:biggrin:
Bump for start of 2013 season in Australia, replay on NBC Sports at 1pm eastern.
NBC coverage was as good as Speed, well except for the rained out qualifying.
Excellent start to the season, nice to see Lotus out front, and Ferrari in good form. Red Bull may still run away with it if Weber ever is awake when the lights go out, caught napping yet again.
