Nice. I’m guessing a brown/black out due to AC use? Hopefully tomorrow isn’t a repeat

112 right now at my house
Oof
Stay cool, everyone
Our weather station shows 112*, but there's some reflection from the roof.
Here's an official station nearby. Humidity went from 27-21%, ugh, ugly heat index

I was just wondering if Portland would finally be on a temp downswing, and clicked through to NWS to see... 114F tomorrow?!?!? What the friggin' fuck? That's like an extraordinary summer temp if it was Vegas. Daaamn. Hang in there people. And prep your improvised ice vests tonight.
But that's the thing with climate change. If you raise the average, you also raise sigma 1 and 2 deviation Events a lot because they are outliers. Germany had 40.3 degrees (communist units) as an all time high at ONE Station since 1983. ( up from 39.highsomething). Which Was tied in 2015 and then blown away by dozens of Stations with nearly 42 as the New record in 2019. It's not going up in small increments if the general setup favors heat waves.
Coming to "other mechanisms", it's fairly simple. The stronger warming in the arctic reduces differences in global temperature and thus leads to a weaker polar vortex. Et voila less westerly flow in mid latitudes which is especially important in the pnw since it disrupts your predominant weather patterns.
How is this affecting the cherry harvest?
Cherries are fine unless it rains

The heat over here(eastern WA) isn’t really unusual. It’s hot and dry but there’s plenty of water because of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project and the rivers draining the east slopes of the Cascades. It’s why this region is a tree fruit Mecca.

Welcome to California, PNWer's.
I played golf in 114 degree weather last summer. You eventually get used to it. ;-)
It made it up to 93 yesterday just before 5 then started dropping, it was 64 when I woke up two hours ago, now it's 71. I made the mistake of mentioning to my gf that I had a window air conditioner somewhere buried in storage that I hadn't used since '98 and she suggested that I find it and install it. Of course it wasn't where I thought it was and had a bunch of stuff on top of it but it worked and had the house down to the low 70's in no time.
80F inside first floor last night at 12:00.
76F inside now in full ventilation mode.
I just hope they get the forecast right and the cool(er) air returns overnight tonight.
I woke up last night and saw the outdoor temp at 75, so I shutdown the AC and opened the windows. The inside house temperature didn't budge at all by 6:00 this morning, but I guess at least it didn't go up...

Woke up around midnight/1am and it was finally cool enough outside to shut off the AC and open the windows. I left the fan on recirculate to keep things moving.
What has been really killing us the last two days is the wind. It picks up around 3pm and blows 10-15mph until sunset. 110 degree winds are not pleasant.
Put the horses out at 4am this morning.
I think there is a whole thread about the effectiveness of attic fans.
From 7am this morning. Actual air temp in the shade was 93( at 7am, using a digital thermometer) We may be fucked. There were scattered power outages yesterday and today will be worse.

Snoqualmie. Foothills are warmer

Most of the vineyards in WA are in the hottest and driest part of the state. I don’t think the grapes will suffer too much, it’s not much hotter than normal.
