In today's world of 2024, I am of the strong opinion that avid collectors, especially new ones, are in fact neo Nazis. I think the only responsible thing to do with unwanted Nazi paraphernalia in 2024 is to first see if a Holocaust museum wants it and then second destroy it so that it never falls into the hands of neo-nazi. I actually had no idea prior to this discussion that a Holocaust museum might want shit like this.Quote:

I have an ss patch from my grandpa. He wasn’t a nazi. War souvenir. But it’s crazy to touch and feel history. It’s in a box somewhere. Haven’t seen it in years. But I can’t throw it out. It makes history reality.

PS. Other than the cool thing of having irl relics you can touch and feel that aren’t under glass cases, this actually ties your family to the anti Nazi war from almost one hundred years ago. That’s awesome. It would be different if he never served.

Question for the lawyers in the house: friend of mine got a DUI back in March. Paid a lawyer $6k who then did a poor job and gave bad advice (this is according to another friend of mine who is a prosecutor in DUI cases) which led to more charges. I think we've taken care of the subsequent charges but what is the next step with the attorney? Prosecutor friend said to file a Bar complaint, but I get the feeling that friend 1 would rather have the $6k back then to get "justice."
Does she reach out to the attorney, explain situation and say shes going to file a bar complaint or would like the money back? Or would the attorney just double down and prepare to fight and going straight to bar is the better option? Not looking for legal advice of course, just perspective from attorneys.
I'm no lawyer but it seems like threatening to report a lawyer to the bar unless they give your friend money is a bad idea. Like blackmail,

No, this person sucked at their job and as a result my friend paid much higher legal consequences than she should have, per state statute. Which is why the prosecutor advised filing a bar complaint, which is the minimum that will happen. I’m the last person who would argue for lighter sentences for DUI, but I don’t think it should turn into a targeted revenue stream for the county and devolve into a situation that keeps someone in the system. I have no idea about the best strategy to get her money back, I have zero professional experience in this arena. But a bar complaint, as I understand it, is not a way to get your money back. It's to get the lawyer in trouble with their licensing board. Which is why I said "warning others"; that doesn't have to be your goal but it is a possible outcome. If the lawyer acted incompetently, a complaint should be filed, period. Unless, I suppose, there is a different strategy that could get a refund, which is something I have no idea on. Or unless, and this is to your point, it would be better mentally for her to just completely walk away and move on.

Just got home from an Airstream rally and those old boys (we are usually at least 20 years younger than the group) had their shit dialed and polished.
I take pride in my things. I try to keep up on it all; rigs, gear, home, yard et al. But try as I might little shit just happens. Just got done washing the Airstream and there is sap all over it from a spot on the beach we camped this summer, and the truck well it needs a whole cut and polish. Clay bar, instant detailer, bug and tar, nothing touched the sap. I am going to have a real project and need to research what will get it off because the clear coat on an Airstream is not like a car, it’s called plasti-coat, so that’s a future me problem.
I grew up with a dad who’s shit was always broken, always dirty, always fucked up, so maybe I am just not raised right to really keep shit dialed? Maybe it’s a time thing because we are always going and always moving from one thing to the next? Maybe it’s a money thing and I have just enough to have nice things, but not really, really take care of them and hire professionals for help when needed? When we do hire things out, we never get an A+ product, our house for instance when we had it built 18 years ago; and there is all kinds of little shit wrong with it. We weren’t like on the contractors, you know like always over the shoulder and saying, “that’s not good enough,” like our older more experienced neighbors. Same with my old truck we had all the body and paint done 13 years ago and the fucker is rusting out on me now. Is there a way to be demanding and still nice about it?
Maybe I just need to reset my expectations because well, life happens and things are really just tools? I had a hunting buddy/mentor once empty his shotgun and just start throwing it on the ground, after I had worried about my own new gun getting a scratch, and he just kept yelling at “it’s a fucking tool.”
Maybe 20 years from now when there are no kids in the house and I am retired with time on my hands it will be easier? Maybe my shit is actually nice and I just see all the little imperfections because it’s my own shit? Maybe I should just buy less stuff and make sure it stays nice?
I should probably drink a beer and be thankful for what I have, and that we got home safe after having a fun weekend; it’s just things and they really are just tools, right?

That clearcoat on the airstream is a bitch. Front and rear top quarter panels on ours have CC peeling sections I’ve coated with canned acrylic. Not doing much with the filiform other than scrape with my nail and wax twice a year. At least a couple more kms on the forestry roads before snow.
Got a ‘03 truck battling rust too. She’ll carry the ‘11 sled just fine this upcoming season. But the timing belt service is coming due….
Those 20yrs to part time consulting will come fast enough. Maybe 8 for me. No plan to rush it. No time like the present! Especially with kids. But yeah, not nearly enough time in the day/weekend/month.

I had great success with isopropyl alcohol removing sap from clothes. The next time I tried, it didn't work. Internet seem to have lots of suggestions... olive oil looks interesting and likely safe. Also a suggestion it may not be sap and is aphid shit instead or other excretion of bugs eating the tree..
On my car, I usually wait for the sun to dry it, then it comes off with a squeegie or a fingernail. I'm not a detailer, so those may not work to your standards.
