What iconic American junk food should I introduce to my nieces from the Czech Republic?

They're staying with my in-laws for about a month this summer and they informed me that as the cool uncle, I have to introduce them to the best American junk food, because their grandparents (my in-laws) doesn't have junk in the house. They've been here a bunch of times and speak English, but it seems there are still some things they haven't gotten around to.

We're going to try to find some totchos, and I'm going to ask if they're interested in Taco Bell.They enjoyed some smash burgers yesterday. I think some kettle chips need to be on the list, and we rejected the one chip challenge (although they do like spicy food). What other iconic junk food should not be missed?

I think someone from Czechia once offered to trade a home baked "black forest" cake for a box of Oreos. So think outside what you crave fortnightly, I guess?

Oreos and Cheetos are good thoughts! I'm so damn old that I lost the taste for most of this stuff (except for Fritos, those are the best), so I appreciate the help from the tgr brain trust

Correct answer, IMO.

I've been to Chile for fun and Norway (Juvass) and Austria (Stubai) for work. Way more skiing to be had in Chile, as long as you can be flexible on location. We were committed to Valle Nevado in a year they got mostly skunked; had we been able to go further south, I think we'd have gotten much better results. Skiing there was generally more expensive than Austria, and everything else is on the pricey side.

Stubai, for whatever reason, had good food cheap (10 EUR in the on-mountain cafeteria before downloading would get you a pretty damn sweet lunch); I think the lodging was relatively reasonable and included breakfast & dinner (and the food at the hotel kicked ass, too). There was some freeskiing in evidence, even in a low-snow period, and I think earlier in the summer at Stubai could give Valle Nevado on a middling year a run for your money.

In Norway, we had okay food in the hotel (better than decent but not as exciting as Stubai) and eating at a restaurant anywhere in the country seemed to rather pricey. Taking something like 20 kids out for burgers cost more than renting an AWD wagon for two weeks. Pretty scenery, not much in the way of freeskiing in evidence.

I wouldn't even consider planning a trip to ski Mt. Hood in the summer unless it involved training. It's still pricey, and the public skiing options are limited.

The fair and carnival foods come to mind. Carmel kettle corn Popcorn, ice cream of all types, favorite candy bars, cookies, cotton candy, nachos an cheese, french fries probably. Deserts like Cakes and pies.

Think more about diners and restaurants. Jolly ranchers and starbursts are easier to replicate. As a “foreigner” now decades deep into Japan— I miss those diners. I miss absurd menu options. Waffles. Burgers. Just absurd menu options only available at small diners.

And one thing America does right, is small mom/pop diners.

And taco trucks. I don’t know if you’re North or South.

Great feedback, I see this topic is near and dear to everyone's hearts.

So here's what I'm thinking right now. I found a wing place in Bend that serves deep fried pickles, Oreos, and Twinkies (not together), so that seems like a pretty awesome place to go. (My wife says "is there anything that we can eat there?" :) ) We'll try to do a diner brunch with them--they don't wake up till 11:00 at the earliest, so breakfast is out. Then I think we'll take them to the grocery store for some of the packaged snack goodness. Sadly, there's no State or county Fair coming up nearby as far as I know, so funnel cake/ elephant ears and all that stuff will have to wait.

I have yet to read anything in this thread that sounds like junk food to me. Just good old fashioned square American diet.

If you'll be in Bend take them to the last Blockbuster for some American history.

Someone did say food carts, and I think there are some good Mexican ones in Bend. My older niece is 20 and is definitely drinking beer back home, but I want to stay squeaky clean, so the double ipas will wait until her next visit. Good thought on Blockbuster, we'll try to fit that in.

How about junk food involving peanut butter? It seems like PB is much less popular in Europe than here.

Well, they have Nutella, so who can blame them? Having said that, I'm going to take over some nutter butters, I love those damn things

My metabolism has increased a fair bit and I sweat profusely now. If I'm working in the garden on a hot day I'll change cloths a few times a day. Have had days were I took three showers. Went to a ball game and by the time I walked from the train station to the ball park, then up to my seats I was soaked right through. Left early it was so uncomfortable.

This is all new to me, if anyone has any tips to help manage this that would be greatly appreciated.

Why do shakey auto repair videos, or any shakey videos make me want to hurl?

Start blasting a few grams of pure Columbian cocarina per day should cool you right down

ultra light merino helps me; I can wear it after it's gotten damp and it doesn't hang on to my swampdog funk like other fabrics. Cotton sure doesn't do it for me.

On another note, why do people buy houses without checking out the neighbors?

Uniqlo Airism does an amazing job at managing sweat. As well as Uniqlo ultralight merino.

Try more salt in your diet. Helps retain more water.

Also could be some side effect of a med or something. I had an anxiety med that was great at 75mg, bumped me to 112.5 and i could soak a shirt sweating at 60 degrees in the first hour of work. Dropped back down and the problem stopped.

TMI— but all my base layers, all of it is Airism or Airism cotton, which is new this year. (70/30 cotton/poly) which is probably quite common across brands. Uniqlo is cheap and comfortable.

Another favorite material is Core Spun, from Montbell. It’s poly threads (core) wrapped (spun) with cotton. So each thread looks and feels like cotton, because it is, but it’s core is poly. Super breathable and dries quickly.

I have four Core Spun button-down shirts that I rotate daily over Airism base. Because I’m neurotic like that.

I consider myself a heavy sweater, but this case sounds pretty extreme. Walking somewhere in hot/full sun conditions my brow and lower back will probably get sweaty. If I can, I'll carry a bandana and use that to wipe sweat away. Lower back you kind of have to deal with. As others said, avoid cotton and wear more breathable clothing.

For harder working activities like doing trailwork I sweat a lot more. Not much I can do except the same as above - bandana to wipe away sweat and as breathable clothing as I can get away with. Right now I'm starting work by 6am and finishing by about 9 or 10 when it starts to really warm up. Or I'll work late afternoon until dark so it's cooling off.

For upper body you could try a short sleeve breathable shirt and wear sun sleeves on your arms. They fit closer than long sleeves, wick sweat and it evaporates more quickly which helps cool you down. https://www.rei.com/search?q=sun+sleeves

Sweating all over or mainly pits, crotch, palms? Sweating a problem just working in the sun or in situations where most people wouldn't sweat at all?

If you have an extreme case and need surgery, sympathectomy is a fun little operation (for the surgeon).

I'm a fan of bamboo-derived fabric for breathability while still feeling nice. Merino isn't quite as breathable and the lighter varieties tend to require more careful handling.

What are you heavy sweaters doing for clothes detergent and synthetics? I’ve got some new POC riding shirts I got on super sale which are holding onto that funk more than anything else I own…

I use WIN sports detergent (sourced from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0X36XA...x=win%2Bs&th=1 ), it's been a game changer for being able to use synthetics (plus it seems to rinse cleanly enough that it works in place of NikWax TechWash to prep for DWR application).

Re the medical side - no new meds and doctor is aware. She believes it's an increase in metabolism due to weight loss and recent blood work was better than expected.

OG I'd say it's in increase in general body sweat but where I notice it the most is my head. When it's bad I can feel the sweat flowing through my hair down my back. And I'd definitely categorize it as sweating when most others wouldn't be.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like hyperhidrosis. I assume your thyroid has been checked.

Is Square credit card processing legit?
I've been hearing about it for years. I was just running cards through PayPal, but people don't love it so I thought I'd step it up a notch.

Very first transaction and my account was flagged for review, they are holding funds until I send a selfie and a driver's license? What kind of bs is this? I look on the BBB and they have 4000 complaints of hijacking funds and never paying.

We've used it for many years as a backup at work if our internet / credit card server goes down and have never had any issues. Also have a friend who sells crafts and uses it at farmer's markets and craft fairs regularly and has never had any problems. Only a couple of data points but 0 problems.

After I wrote this looked on reddit and they have lots of complaints about doing fine for years and then freezing accounts and taking hundreds/thousands for a maintenance fee. I'll definitely be trying to get my $700 and then finding a different solution. I have a buddy that does payment processing but they are geared a little bigger and charge a $20 monthly fee which is a bit prohibitive since I only run a card once in a blue moon currently.

Square has millions upon millions of transactions so some complaints should be expected. Not vouching for them, just saying. Maybe try Shopify.
