Maggot motorcycle stoke thread

Two summers ago, an 18 wheeler parks beside my abode as I'm mowing. Wtf? I says...you're not staying here long are ya. Illegal in town, it is.

Cool driver he's just here for a few hours to drop off some motos for some folks flying in from Miami.

That piqued my interest, oh yeah, what kinda bikes?
Oh, mostly BMW's.
Reaaally, I says. How many?
Oh, about 20.
Seriously, wow. He begins to unload them and park them at the opposite curb. These were some of the sweetest BMW's I've seen, a few collector editions, etc.
It was a stunning show and the group began to arrive, so I talked to the organizer, very cool Cubano.
Turns out he's the CFO for the biggest beemer dealer in Miami.

We get to jawing and he asks if I'm interested in taking a lap with them tomorrow.
Sorry, gotta work but next time fosho.

All of these beachy city latinos come around and not being particularly friendly as I inspect. My usual no fucks given. They warm up and start asking me where they can go fast. I tell them anywhere ya want man. Look around you.

The next 4 days it rains like a mofo.
I hear them rumble out each morning.

It is disappointing to me how many people trailer their motorcycles here (JH) for a weekend then drive home in a day or two.
Usually big honking Hogs.

On the snow bike query.

I don't have a snow bike but a couple obvious things seem true:

Buy two bikes.

A 250 or 300 two stroke for singletrack. Both should have more than enough low end grunt. Can't beat a 2 stroke for nimbleness in singletrack. Not as good for desert whoops and high speed sand.

For a snow bike, I'm not sure... guessing either a 500 4 stroke or motocross 450 4 stroke. I definitely wouldn't go smaller than that. Everyone that rides them says power is crucial.

Timbersleds are not snowmobiles. I've riden one a few times and they are fun. Just be aware that when it is steep and deep with frequently no base (the northern mountains of Colorado), they are down on power and float and struggle.

There are certainly places even an average modern sled can go that a snow bike can't. And that's before we even talk about the face melting power of a turbo 850.

I dunno. I've been riding since I was 20 yrs old and I don't see a difference. Maybe more old guys on 800# baggers and adventure bikes now and less sportbikes. Perhaps you're hanging out in the wrong dealerships and forums? VT-Free can get you on teh Aprilia forum. They seem like cool chaps. The Ducati forum I'm on has always been a weird place. That hasn't changed. The multi line BMW/Ducati/Triumph/Kawi dealership I go to is great.

I can't speak to the dirt riding scene as I've not done that since I got my MC license. But the dudes posting here seem cool.

I guess I don't see it the same way you do.

exactly. If you have snowmobile experience (i'm not talking about a trail ride), snowbikes by comparison are wildly underpowered, have a skinny track, and you lean them over to turn like you do with most two wheeled machines.

I was doing pretty well on them for a relative newb. Some longer ones I scouted on first since I couldn't see all the way up. This one looked ugly from below but was totally fine. Others were harder, but I made it up all of them first try.

After that it was gravel all the way down Hoodoo Wash. I thought it connected a ways north of Hoodoo Cabin and hadn't planned to stop in, but it came out within view. We stayed there on night 2 of our bikepack trip.

Pretty nice sunset. I decided to bail on the second half of the loop to the east and instead take the same road over Red Rock Pass as our bikepack, since I knew it was good. The eastern route crosses a mountain range which could mean rocky steeps and I didn't want to be doing those for the first time in the dark.

The loop was 54 miles. The trail over Big Horn Pass would be pretty poor on a MTB between the gravel wash riding that would be pretty miserable, and the 25-30 steep climbs.

Did another ride near Yuma. Actually on the CA side of the line, east side of Ogilby Road from the Imperial Dunes Rec Area (aka Glamis)

On the Kofa bikepack trip we mostly saw tattered chunks of SxS flags stuck in ocotillos overhanging the trail. You know you're back in CA when you're seeing mylar balloons in the backcountry :fuckyou:

Managed to tip the moto over trying to turn around and bent the hand guard enough it interfered with the clutch. Had to undo one side of the hand guard to ride out. Time to GTFO

Opted to head home rather than spend another day. Storm was approaching, wouldn't hit the desert for another day but would hit the San diego mountains starting soon. Good choice, I-8 was already closed to high profile vehicles when I got to the base of the mountains. Super sketchy drive with crazy erratic winds, sideways rain and minimal visibility due to fog. Passed a few overturned semis in the ditch.

I tipped mine over last night while parking it. I didn’t fall completely over as I caught myself on my wife’s car with my forearm. So it was still running with the clutch pulled in resting on myself and the car. I had to kill it with the kill switch to be able to let off the clutch so I could get the leverage to right it. The previous owner got rid of it because he dropped it and had to have his wife help him pick it up. He bought a KLX300 new without riding it and he is not happy with it.

I hit 2k miles on the new bike Ktm 300, xcw, including 1,000 in the last 14 days. Installed a 14t front sprocket last week and much better highway comfort with enough umph crawling over slick rock at low speeds. A welcome improvement.

Also put a 130 tusk d-sport tire on the rear which is much bigger than the stock 110 Dunlop. It’s all we had in stock for cheap. It seems to grip better in sand but is more lethargic overall. Next time will try 120 or maybe back to 110.

Got a 2gal gas bag plus the stock 2.1 and I’m good for 175ish miles. Gonna upgrade the tank to 3.n and then be able to range to 200 with the big bikes w the bag.

Got a few new minor injuries directly related to the bike. Sore knees and sore shoulder mostly due to my newfound excitement for wheelies and just the general two stroke “hold on for dear life” dynamics. Throttle control on these bikes is paramount. I damn near whiskey throttled myself into a canyon wall yesterday after getting fucked up by an IED. Had to pull over and check my head for a minute and let the pure fear of death abate.

Anywho, moto season is ramping up here in southern Utah. Cheers and holla if you find yourself down here.

Nice shots! Got to ride Whitwash the past 3 days. Lots of moto traffic, not too many SXS yet. Really nice in the dez this time of year. I'll reach out next trip.
