If the frame horns are straight it's not gonna be hard to fix. An afternoon with the right parts and you'll be back in business. Just have extra hands to pull the hood.
Hit up one of the part out guys on mud, pick up an aftermarket bumper and go.
If you want it off insurance it won't be bad, but definitely cheaper using insurance depending on your policy.
They could easily call that enough to total it depending on year/mileage.
Edit: after looking again it really looks like just bumper hood grille and maybe rad support (which if like an 80 can be replaced with like 8 bolts). Definitely do it yourself.
thanks for the response!
the truck is at a body shop and i have the insurance quote on my lap. The quote, of course, is nuts ($6.7k). i have not authorized the work. There's no mention of frame horns in the quote. the quote is all front bumper, grill, front lights, rad support, "horn high note," hood lock (the hood's not damaged), fenders (both are a little crinkled but do not actually need replacement). the quote is much more detailed, of course.
Currently, i'm trying to get a hold of somebody at my insurance that can give me some details about how my bottomline will change (i.e. surcharge and schedule, loss of good drive discount, accident foregiveness, etc.). i'm trying to make an informed decision with a goal of saving some $$ but having a safe and functional front end.
my research and brief query on ih8mud seems to lead me believing that an aftermarket bumper (e.g. arb) may have prevented the damage to the grill and lights. of course, ih8mud folks (and tgr folks) are biased :)
Depends. Steel bumpers deflect a lot of damage but can also cause the frame to twist easier as they're more rigid and less likely to be the weak point in an accident.
I'd say slap some new parts on there yourself and stay away from insurance but that's just me.

Has anyone been here before? Looks like a pretty cool collection to drool over.

It's driveable, I assume? Definitely appears to be and you didn't mention getting towed. Lights relatively straight?
Given the weather, I'd continue driving as-is for now, and then fix yourself when the rain is gone. The kind of stuff you're talking about here is pretty straightforward. Welding and cutting gets dicier without help, but bolting on a bumper, new grill, and hood is mellow. Pick and Pull is in Rocklin.
thanks. the side signal lights are dangling. drove it home w/o problems from soda springs. not sure if the headlights are pointing correctly/straight. the radiator mount is a little messed and the hood latch system needs replacement. now that the hood is not latched (it was latched in the photos and on the drive home), it won't re-latch and i'd have to tie down the hood to drive it. until replacing the parts. i've also been advised to discretely talk to the body shop about the deductible. if i cancel the claim, they will be getting a fraction of the bottomline from the quote.
if i could go back in time, i'd definitely do this differently.
Never mind
Finally got a bottom line “reasonable” estimate from insurance if I choose to move forward with the claim, double of my premium for 3 yrs. fuck that shit. Gonna talk to the body shop on Tuesday and gonna do minimal work. Will come out of this with a steel bumper though. Thinking ARB or tjm. Not aware of anything else that I could get quickly. Dissent and 4x4lab are local but build to order.
I've been in there and checked it out. It is pretty cool. Always a badass black 80 series with icon shocks on it parked outside. No signs or anything. Lots of cool trucks.

You guys would like this show if you haven’t seen it.
2 Land Cruisers, 2 4Runners, and a Jeep compete.
Not an 80 series, but thought you LC guys would like this one:

Got the Vivian back from Torfab, she's super happy now. No more rusty hood, a lot of little dumb issues fixed, new steering, lockers 100% working. Bringing her back in a couple months for the 5.29 regear and chromoly birfields. Then she'll be ready to wear the 37" Trepadors.
^^^ What headlights are you using? I've been looking at replacing my OEMs with units from Dapper Lighting.
I bought some cheapies on eBay. Needed to be rewired but are nice and bright

I love this truck
I was thinking we should do a maggot land cruiser meet up this summer. Maybe in north central Idaho or Eastern Wa. Do a weekend deal, drive a few shitty roads and camp in the mountains.
I preordered the wits end turbo kit.
@ 7psi of boost the dyno numbers are pretty insane.
stock 120awhp/170 ft lb
supercharger: 155awhp / 238 ft lb
Turbo: 214hp/277 ft lb
thread on mud:

Thinking of this route:
https://overlandjournal.com/overland-routes/
Washington sometime this summer then the Oregon to Tahoe section likely late August.
Very good.
So when you stud the head, run a steel gasket and 20psi of boost what do you think you'll be putting down? :D
Would love to watch a boosted cruiser smoke a sports car in a drag race.
Ha. I went oem head bolts and gasket when I just did my rebuild but don't think they'll have any issue with only 7psi.
There's a mud member who has built his out and at like 14psi was putting out over 700hp I think? But he's forged rods/pistons/ported head, etc.
The 1fz can be a monster.
