Instability inbounds can help provide info out of bounds for avalanche problems. Stability inbounds is obviously no indicator for anything out of bounds.
Bridger Teton Avalanche Center actually reports all results of inbounds AC work on their website. That operation is unique because it is physically based in the resort, but yes there is relevant information to BC skiers that can be obtained from inbounds results.
Also early season if the resort hasn't bombed or opened a slope, inbounds snow structure can be similar to out of bounds. Also during wet slide cycles, inbounds and out of bounds can have the same concerns.
^^ Yes, as I said in the part of my post you didn't quote. ;-)
Glad no one else was caught during the search.
KW is gonna be a shitshow today. Reported 18" with 12 overnight but 6 is on hold for hard snow conditions...
where is this 100" of snow that was in the forecast yesterday?
Not quite sure what the fuck I just skied at Heavenly today but it was fun as hell, best turns of the year hands down. I was outbound to Kirkwood with a bud and we made a last minute change to head to Heavenly since the upper mountain had been closed the day before. Gondi was not moving when we rolled up so we headed up to Stagecoach, almost no one was there and they opened at 8:28am. Snow was a perfectly smooth wind packed surface but soft enough to get edge in with a little penetration, we called it "Just the Tip" day. Best way I can describe it was like skiing perfect backcountry corn, no speed limits though the trees, really fucking fun.
Interesting to hear the Heavenly trees were great today. I went to S@T today and the West Bowl groomers were surprisingly great, soft and fast. But anything off piste was out of the question imo, mtn was a giant ice rink! Even if it were softer the snowpack is too thin anyway. Hoping this next storm trends colder!
I think elevation was in Heavenly s favor also being more east from the crest maybe less wet stuff hit it at the end. Add to that it was not compacted by skiers yesterday, this was the stuff off Dipper and Comet, lower elevation stuff was not fun but you had a groomer to get back down that was fine. Things got pasted so well up there, coverage is very good up high,
Report from a tweet that body has been recovered at Rose from yesterdays slide in the chutes. No other information released.
They have found the body but they're still saying they're not sure it's him.
Elephant back went huge last night or today (the debris pile did not get rain and refreeze). The lower right toe was 15'-20' deep.

The skiing up high was lovely cream cheese. Below it was carvable but unbreakable crust. all in all pretty good

I have seen some slide debris in that bowl at Eback, but never anything that big. That bowl was my first BC run in Tahoe 20 years ago.
Breakable and supportable crust in Mt. Rose Meadows on a kick and glide excursion.
Thats a big one, you guys the first ones out there? Do a beacon search just in case?
No there were three people at the bottom when we got there.
That is quite impressive!
Is amazing people no check forecast...anyone reading about local area woulda held off w such redflag conditions- Even pros risk ,though-miss ya ,the ones that didn't make it .... human bomb test..oh. u ,j p .
Lotsa ghosts up on them ridges
Upper half of incline peak skiied great
Rose FTW

The SAC forecast is daunting. I wonder if we are going to go through another slow cycle on that persistent weakness like last season. I have not read closely enough, is there any description or text of the observed locations of the layer? That would be useful information. We at least know that elephants back is probably cleaned.
In most places this is the bottom of the pack. It will be easier to trigger near rocks and anywhere the snowpack is shallower due to spatial variability. While not likely, they are possible and their likely size is listed as 'Very Large to Historic'. Historic is bad.Quote:
The persistent weak layer now has anywhere from 2 to 4 ft. of snow on top of it that can act as a slab layer. While data and observations have shown this layer to be most prevalent above 9000 ft. in the Mt. Rose area and above 8300 ft. along the Sierra Crest some observations have recently found it at lower elevations.
Tahoe is the new Colorado, apparently...

Just terrible.

Don't know if anyone found anything good to ski, but it was the holy grail for Fat biking out there today!

Holy shit! That is freaking awesome.
That actually looks pretty sick! Fresh tracks look like must be like a cross between moist singletrack and slick rock sandstone!
That first pic should get sent to BIKE magazine... sweet! Take any video? Curious how fast you get moving in those conditions.
Glad I check in here and SAC. Just found time to read today, and I would have thought the rain penetrated deep enough below 9000'.
Historic would be scary.
Powdork - based on what you saw at eback, did it seem it broke on the PWL? From the pick it looks like a layer above the bottom.
Avalanche problems like this are exactly why the NA Danger Scale should be abolished for recreational use forecasts. Or at least shown at the bottom of the page, well below the avalanche problems.
Not to play down what the experts say but based on what I skied and biked the last two days, seems like the snow is pretty well bridged, nearly zero penetration at least in the areas I've been the last two days.
Some shots from yesterday at Kirkwood below...
My daughter had a mini-Jets eval so we were going regardless of rain or snow. Pulling up in the lot, the upper mountain looked $$$$$. Then we took a few runs on Chair 7 and found it a bit frozen. Headed over to the Village at 10am and it was super crowded as Chair 5 & 6 had some icing issues on the lift. Saw Coop and he said that it was FIRM up top so I headed to 7 to do more groomers until I was informed that 6 just popped. Did around 7 runs in there from Monte's all the way to Rabbits. Skied Chamoix and found great snow until the exit of the air. The snow was weird. The top 30% on the main runs like Olympic, Sentinel, Rabbits all held winter turns but off trail was another story. I cruised around Oops and Poops (of course), Ski School Chute and found hard snow conditions that was still grippy with an hard edge...kind of fun on the super steep zones in its own unique way, but the frozen pow turns in the flats and gullies were atrocious. By the end of the day, you could feel the snow slowly trying to break up a bit (as you can see in the pics) but Monte's with all the skiers breaking up the crust layer had the best turns of the day by a wide margin. Groomers were crazy firm but edgeable on fat skis with finesse. Had a beer at lunch and then skied with my son for a few hours and was happy with the day's turns in the mountains. The upper mountain in caked.
Still having trouble finding the perfect spot for my GoPro Session...loved the side mount and angle of my old Contour but I'm one hell of a time finding that ideal angle. If anyone has found the perfect solution PM me.
