East Coast Surf

So I am in seen of a solid 5/4. My question for you guys. Do i splurge on something like an Xcel Drylock ($560) or should I save some money and grab a Hyperflex VooDoo ($340). Both are their top of the line stuff for the respective brands but that is a huge price difference.

Given the intended temps, I am semi inclined to spend more for what is viewed (to me) as a better product but I currently have a HF Cyclone 3/2 and i think the thing is money. I dont have enough experience with suits to know if its just technology marketing hype or if its worth the $$ so input is appreciated.

The drylock is sweet, my wife has one, but the regular infinity 5/4 has been my go to for a half a dozen winters now. 200 bux cheaper than the drylock, and just as durable and plenty warm. I get a new one every other winter as im in it a ton.

Just ordered my 1st oneill in 20 years. 4/3 hyperfreak. Stoked to try the new "buttery" neoprene.

^^^^I feel like neoprene ages with time anyway. as does the varies materials that hold together the seems. I have hooded r3 that I only use in winter, and hope it lasts at least 4 winters, but i'm only trying that out because I picked it up for $230. otherwise i use a ebomb most days and am at about 1.5 years in it. Some wear and tear for sure, but looks good to go through another six months. will probably wait until this time next year to replace it, and put it in the back up/socal/eastside summer pile. My old excel is about 12 years old and will soon actually fall to pieces.

Ya, a 560 suit wont last any longer than a 360 suit, which is why i go for 360.

I bought an Isurus 3/2 for 20 percent off surfride.com, and it was amazing. It wasn't wicked cheap, but with the discount it was no more or less than any other solid new 3/2. I was obsessed with it, so I shot Isurus an email about how satisfied I was. The owner Jim was stoked I was stoked, gave me 25 percent off my next suit. So naturally I bought a primo hooded 4/3 for a wicked deal IMO. I'll see how far that gets me!

Winter suits haven't been on whiskeymilitia for a month or so but prior year suits pop up for ~40% off list frequently. I got a hooded 6/5 Infiniti for 189 a summer ago. Almost time to break out the 4/3.

....hope to get to the coast this thurs-friday. I haven't told the gf I won't be hiking yet, but already starting to make plans with the kook.:tdo13:

Chest to head and sqeaky clean under the nubble protection this am. 9 feet @ 8/9 and ez breezy. Total of four of us out all spread on separate peaks.

tomorrow looks like a carbon copy if not a bit bigger. Same time same spot.:)

York looks stormy cuz the cam is mid beach. North end should be much cleaner like this am was. Gooches may be Alot busier with less swell getting in. YORK!

Gooches pretty much only does better when in a ragin nor'easter. Better wrap in and better wind direction. Oddly, shoals keep it from picking up much swell from the south.

Conditions are nice here along the central west coast today. About 88 on the beach this afternoon, glassy and head high.

Got a report on gooches from yesterday mid day from a very knowledgable source. He went up there and said it was small and crowded and a bit side shore. He said he didn't even consider york. I thanked him for that:).

he said the rocks was super crowded and thick this am with wind.

Whew. Back home and exhausted after 8hrs in the water today and 2 yesterday.

Great meeting roj and getting in some time on the water with him.

Also great to serendipitouly run into 'hooked' at the end of our York session. Very cool dude; I think i talked him into making an appearance at Ullrfest, Just not this year. ;-)

Ugh, long sands at low tide with 8ft swell.... Do. Not. Recommend. Just constantly taking it on the head the whole paddle out. We ended up at higgins for mid-tide and it was smaller. But thankfully a easy paddle.

8 hours good god. Don't think i've ever surfed more than 4 hours in a day or 3 in one session.

Glad you enjoyed your time. Glad to know that our "soft" york wave provided a physical challenge at low tide:)

this morning was quite good. Still 7+ ft @ 11 (head+ sets often) with a slight bump on it and very few folks out. Rights and lefts were breaking well.

tomorrow could be the sweetheart of the 4 day swell as winds go straight west with swell still present.

These days 3 hours is long. When I was 17, and a hurricane swell hit, and we had no work, we would max out somewhere around 14 hours. Sun up to sun down with a short lunch break. I can recall being at a party just after sunset. My older sister showed up after she got out I work and started to chew me out for being drunk so early. I had had half a beer and passed out in a recliner. That was a sign of a good day of surf.

How far are decent surf spots from downtown Boston? Have an interview up there next week and if it ends up working out I'm going to need to figure out where to go etc.

I'm definitely a 1-2 hour session kinda guy. I suppose if i didn't get so many days in, i'd spend more time out there at a time.

surprised to see no reports here of, imo, the 2 best days of the 5 day swell that ended late yesterday. Sunday was clean everywhere in the chest to head high range and crowded as fuck. I actually skipped sunday to ride my bike as i only had the morning free and york looked like shit early at 1st light and i didn't want to wait around. Well the mtb ride was killer, but we had family in town from noon on and when everyone wanted to go for a beach walk after grilling, i knew it would be torture for me to be there and not be able to surf. So we head down at 4pm and as soon as i saw the ocean i was freaking out inside. Fucking perfect shoulder high green glass and like 4 folks out in total. That's it, just 4 for like 3/4 of a mile of peaks. My mother in law saw the surf and told me to go get my board and that she'd take my wife home after the walk. I was al like, shhhhhhhhh! And then wifey interjected and said "he's not surfing, he was riding his mtb for 3.5 hours this morning, he's just going to have to learn to deal with it!". Her dad looks at me and we both did one of these. :fm:, fucking classic:D oh it hurt, it hurt so bad to walk the beach. I couldn't even look to the water:(

So then i watch the buoy all night on sunday and thought there was a chance for a make up sesh on monday am. Fkna was i right. Up at 5:30, out the door at 545, and cruising the nh seacoast at 1st light. What was to follow was probably one of my most fun sessions of the year. Wasn't big, waist to chest perfect clean a frames with just a few out at my favorite beach break anywhere. I can't remember the last time i surfed such hero waves. Hero in every way. From take off to kick out the lefts and rights were flawless. Held up perfect the whole way. I was the only one out on a board shorter than 8 feet (5'8) but a few others said they wished they'd brought smaller boards for increased fun factor. The folks out were also saying that they thought the conditions overall were much more gratifying than sunday was due to the fact that it was so uncrowded. I heard there were like 100 guys out on sunday:eek:.

As much as i despise driving much to surf, the 1/2 hour drive home had me perma grinning the whole way:)

Will definitely be spending more time back at that break this winter.

Not much surf on the radar in the coming days, but i'm sure there'll be something worth paddling for.

Next time walk with a can of beer. You got a little one coming, so you know the mrs. is right - get used to it. Best start working on your sand castle skills and digger names. And buy a camera. It passes the time, and we need photographic evidence of stokage.

My mom reported at least 75 out at the rivermouth Sunday. Sounds fun.

i hear ya. Sooooooooo glad that we live so close to the beach. I may not get out for long sessions but i should be able to get out often, still.

Sorry no surf pics. York was wicked busy early thru mid day sunday, but everyone was gone after that. And that's when the surf was best. Sonofabitch. I heard new hammy was EPIC crowds from 1st light. That's why monday was so sweet. Great surf without the bodies.

Cranking windswell right now. 1st light could be quite good tomorrow. In the right places.......

I'm mostly short 45min-1.5hr sessions with the kiddo. That was the case most of my "professional" life as well. Sunrise surf until 8, shower, drive, and go to work. Sometimes I'd stretch a session and arrive late if the surf was really good. I consulted for the fall and winter before my son was born. Usually surfed a bit longer sessions then, but only when the surf was cranking. If it was good, I'd sneak a second shorter one.

Anyway, with family life the quickie is pretty awesome. DId not get in much more than once a week for the first few months, but was able to work consistency around 3 months. Wife was pretty stocked on this, as I was around a lot to help when she was exhausted. Keeps on paying dividend. But these days, if I have family visiting, and the surf is up, I'll will milk it for all it is worth. Friday was 3.5 hours. Swell was pulsing, so sometimes it would be pretty much a lull for 40 minutes at a time, then crank for and hour, then lull, then crank. It was nice that the only time it got crowded, with 5 of us, it was pretty much a lull. Never had to fight for waves, cause it would be 2, or maybe 3 of us at times it was cranking. The lulls, were kind of tough. My first ten minutes I got 3 killer waves, and then nothing for at least the next 15. Like nothing. Of course, I could have paddled in, gone home, and work on a retaining wall, split wood, rewire a room, fix the sink, or hang out in a hot park with my son and mom-in-law. But instead, I'd just stay out and wait for it to turn on again. Until my shoulders were spent.

Wifey has given me a solid 3-4 hour window to do a mtb group ride with a great group of riders on sunday mornings once the baby's born. If there's good surf that window of time will be for surf. she works like 7-330 and i work 11-7 or 12-8 so once our daughter's in daycare i can drop her off for half days on my way to work for 23 bux if there's no surf, or drop her off at 715am for a full day for 43 bux and surf for the morning. Who knows i may not ever want to drop her off at daycare. I get a ton of vacation hours at work so i have a feeling many of my sessions will be mid day 2-3 hour surf windows during my work days. Work a coupla hours, clock out, hit the nh coast for an hour or two then back to work and home at my normal time. I could do that a coupla/few days a week and always get home on time:)

Gotta work it!

I'll just say this. A rush of hormones, something akin to passing a rugby ball through a sphincter not much looser than your asshole (and yours can sound pretty tight at times, no offence) and the possibility of torn taint and Epsom salt diapers can sometimes change plans. Good luck though.

Hell, those drop in day rates are pretty nice. I'd pay $23 for a solid surf session of four hours door to door. You should do fine. If you guy ever get any surf that is.
