when shopping thrift stores, every now and then i see ancient, legit touring skis with
the synthetic strips in the base (Bonna?) for sale
so, its not a new idea. if it was a good idea,
seems like more companies would produce a similar product
(maybe they are and im out of touch?)
it's designed for geezers who want to ski, but,
don't want to go fast enough to crash and break something
there, i said it
.
skin skis for classic are pretty much the best things ever invented. i don’t see anyone fucking around with wax anymore. my gf got a pair and her glide is faster than mine and she always gets up the hills without worrying about waxing which sucks when you get it wrong. i don’t know if the skins work as well on fresh snow but skin skis are not a fad. in a few years when you see someone waxing up it’ll be the same guy who is also carrying a discman with an 35mm slung around their neck.
.
what's a discman?
.
They’re not for geezers. They’re available on top end racing skis.
Also:
“Cross-country skin skis are a relatively new technology. Atomic was experimenting with attaching mohair strips to the kick zones of wax skis with klister at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.”

There was a handful of replacement skin strips sold in Gear Swap a few years back. When you can't kick, stomp. When you can't stomp, herring bone.
The Sport Tube is pretty nice, telescopes and has wheels and a handle for hauling around the airport. I have a Series 2 which fits 4 pairs of skis with poles (if you pack carefully). Nice thing about flying with nordic skis is you don't need to worry about the weight limit.
You can do the PVC tube instead but large PVC tubes aren't that cheap and you still need to rig a handle.
This is also the answer to not being able to get a workout doing classic (in addition to "go faster"). On steep hills you're basically running up the hill with skis on your feet. I actually find it easier to keep my HR down while skating since I can always skate slowly but kicking slowly doesn't work (uphill).
I tried those Hok skis back when they came out but found they were too fat and too short. The mount point seemed like it was fooked as well.
Asked my buddy who runs a xc center about the madshuss skis and he said they are too narrow and too stiff.
Still looking for that “goldie locks” ski for tour skippity skip.
When I'm approaching and then moving up a hill, generally my progression in technique is to kick on the groomed until I can't then move over to the fresh snow then skate uphill until the speed is so low the skate becomes a herring bone. So many variables with hill, snow quality, camber/grip. Using all the tools in your tool box to seek efficiency is what I like about the game. And skating down hill :)
You mean the reverse or negative pockets?
I have a set of the old Fishers and have had good luck with them, if only they were a tad wider.
I have considered getting out the dremel and making my own pockets. I know others here have done zackly that.
S bounds with high top leather and 3 pins are my every day anywhere driver. I carry skins. Seems to me those short fat skis with skins are dope for checking a trap line or tending a sugar grove. Sliding snow shoes.
I have the Voile Vector BC ski (the model with fish scales). It's an alpine ski, not a nordic ski. But if you want downhill performance and fat, Voile has several models with the fish scales. They are my Spring ski mountaineering ski and great for long, flat, slightly up, slightly down approaches. I still bring skins and ski crampons for when it gets steep and icy.

Basically what I tell people.

I snagged one of the last pair of 174 around Thanksgiving. I’m big and they’re fine if the snow isn’t too deep. That pic was 18” of nice dry, cold snow. It was on the verge of being too deep for me.
I’m not sure what it would take to get a 185 mold made. I asked Nils and he said it would take dozens of pairs to just break even.
They have a really great flex for soft snow and are wide enough to be a little surfy. Not as stiff as Voile’s offerings which aren’t that great for hippie pow

The Voile V6 BC skis with the traction base + tip & tail rocker are slarvy & very good in hippie pow conditions 😁⛷
The other Voile BC traction base models have flatter tails, are less slarvy & more carvy 🔪

LOL. My winter XC since the solstice. So warm there was griz tracks reported on the trails at 900m. That’s a new one.

Where is that? Looks choice.
I was back up at Green Woodlands today, saw the man himself, Bob Green, grooming with a snowmobile. Too thin for the cat tillers, snow coming though! If you don’t know the story on Bob Green, he’s awesome, I’ll just leave it at that!

Perfect blue-sky day, 32* and fast snow. I really think Nordic is my new jam, especially on this low snow season.

petit train du nord, used to be a train to tremblant round trip that would stop at all the little hills for a quarter before they built the stupid highway.
now it’s your normal NE rail to trail with a lot of lakes, rivers, cottonheads, etc. goes forever and some of the sections are pretty nice, and it’s one of the only free spaces to get out in the laurentians. fucking crowded on the weekend.
Just went down a Green Woodlands Strava rabbit hole. Y’all need to see this ski from a couple of years ago from Simi Hamilton. It insane how fast World Cup skiers are, and to do it for this duration?!?!

I just ran into Simi’s FIL at a party last weekend. He and Sophie are enjoying Basalt these days but still came back to VT for the holidays.
I've got new skate skis, boots, bindings on the way. Brand new nice stuff will be a big step up from my thrift shop set up with combi boots. I ordered the boots and skis from bobleisure.com (German retailer?) after seeing the 4 page thread here on TGR verifying it's legit; but they had no bindings. Ordered the bindings from a shop in Portland, OR. The stuff from Germany is scheduled to get here a day sooner than Oregon?
Rosie Brennan and Julie Kern got on the podium this AM. Well Done Ladies.
Finally starting to snow back east, more K opening daily, still kinda thin in spots, but generally very good skiing. It’s dumping right now and we’re looking at another 8-10 tonight!
From today at Woodstock Nordic
Smelled the wood stove from a ways off, so skied over to the cabin and sat by the stove for a few minutes.

Anyone have recs for a good midweight skate ski mitten? I have a lingering hand injury so currently have to keep my middle and index fingers buddy taped together while skiing. My Flylow oven mitts are too bulky for my pole straps and also too toasty. Could do split finger down the middle as well but mainly want something that keeps me warm but not too hot in 15-25 degree temps (my hands don’t run particularly cold)
