Nice little wheat collection there.

Has anybody mentioned Four Roses Single Barrel? Probably. Sitting here consuming second of two big shots. Very good value. Hot and sweet, but smooth.
Just like that blonde with dorky bald guy checking me out checking her out. Hot and sweet.
Beam is Hudge, that is not really what is going on with bourbon or even bourbonish whiskeys. I'm interested in what happens when all the micro distillery whiskeys come of age. Deerhammer out of Buena Vista has some potential for instance. The likker industry is about to take a hit from the micros. Just like beer.
Regrettably, I ended up selling my bottle of 23yr of PVW - I couldn't pass up the offer, but it still bummed me out. This past weekend though, a friend had a party who has a decent collection of bourbon and was excited to let me sample quite a few since I enjoyed it, including a 2012 PVW 23. I also had Buffalo Trace and a few others. Super generous of him - it definitely made my night. To date though, my favorite is George T Stagg. I had a glass of this on NYE and will definitely be keeping an eye out for it this fall. I now enjoy it more than any PVW I've had.
Finished off my bottle of last year's George T Stagg last Friday night after dinner. Boy was that a nice whiskey. Too bad the Antique Collection is becoming as hard to come by as Pappy at this point.
The one that has me hooting and hollering each time I drink it is the Elijah Craig 12y Cask Strength. It is ridiculous. If you ever run across it at a bar someplace then be sure to spring for a glass.
I'll have to keep an eye out for the Elijah Craig. Coohills Restaurant downtown has a very respectable collection of bourbon including most years of PVW and Stagg. Apparently Root Down at DIA has PVW as well lol.
Y'know, I got a bottle of the 21 yo Elijah Craig, and I'm having a hell of a time appreciating it. I dunno what my problem is, but it doesn't speak to me. But at least it costs a lot of $$.
I recently managed to snag a free glass of E.H. Taylor Warehouse C Tornado Surviving Bourbon, which apparently goes for about $600/bottle if you can find one. Verdict: interesting and very intense, but worth more like $80-100 if you could actually still buy it.
Elijah Craig didn't set me on fire. Too tannic.
My favorite bourbon so far is Buffalo Trace. Four Roses is quite nice too.
In other news, as the attached, crappy cell phone pic can attest, this Pappy thing has gotten a bit out of control.

Tulips anyone?
Finally found a bar with Buffalo Trace (I don't get out that much) and agree it's very nice. Not sure whether I like it better than Basil Hayden though. Will have to try them back to back to be sure.
For the money I still haven't found anything that beats Woodford.
I think I'm going to enjoy a couple fingers of Templeton Rye when I get back from walking the dog.
My two faves are Eagle Rare and Knob Creek.
Edit: so far
Got into some of the old man's Russels Reserve 10 yr last weekend. It had been a while, and once again it surprised me. Easily my favorite daily drinker...for now.
Stagg? That stuff is something special.
Bought a fresh bottle of Noah's Mill this evening. I freaking love that stuff. Coarse, spicy, leathery, rustic and delicious at cask strength.
And yeah, If you can get your hands on the George T Stagg DO IT!!!

Got lucky and got a couple Van Winkle 12 Lot Bs and a 10 year, and a Jack Handy in Nov/Dec. I've only popped the Jack Handy which is really smooth. How does it compare to the others of the antique collection? Is Stagg a lot better than Jr as everybody says. I know where a Jr. is on the shelf but passed due to what I heard. Never had Stagg.
If anyone in the MPLS/STP area wants to try the 10 and 12 Van Winkle they have them at the Stone Tap in Hudson, WI. At the Nova in Hudson, they had Pappy 15 and 20 a week or two ago but were running low. All were really smooth I thought with very little burn in the nose -- just a nice warm tummy. Be warned... the pours aren't cheap but both places seemed to have some other high end whiskies I would like to try or have tried there.
For the person asking about Four Roses Single Barrel, I drank about half a bottle with some beer last weekend. It was OK. Tastes pretty good but more hot in the nose -- not bad but just not like the others but what can you expect. Good enough for the price. I think Bullit is my budget goto but I have to get another bottle to confirm (can't remember if it's in the higher ABV group ~ 100 proof).
I drink everything clean if it matters. I need some more of those cold chilling stones.
I met a guy that works at the what they say is the biggest Bourbon bar in MN on a whisky forum. Also met a guy who claims (and everybody seems to agree) to own the liquor store in MN that has the biggest bourbon collection. I'll try to post them up tomorrow if I remember.
Bought the last bottle of Buffalo Trace from the LLS. They told me they can't get anymore "for a while". Went on line and found out BT is short 100,000 barrels. Oh the horror.
Split a bottle of Weller 12yr last weekend with some friends. It did not suck.

@ Cruiser, whatcha got in the store right now. I just had a bottle of the Woodford Double Oaked. I did not like it. Sweet, overbearing oak with no fire or spice. E.H. Taylor is my favorite in the $40 range by far.
Still have a couple of bottles of Noah's Mill (and Rowan's Creek) in stock. With all the shortages we're experiencing right now in real small batch bourbon I feel sure that it won't be long before the supply dries up on that one too. I'm stockpiling a little extra for my personal stash.

I found a case of Buffalo Trace at KL wines in Cali for $20/bottle. Score.
Michter's Single Barrel 10 yr old. Barrel 14A22 is nice.
edit: On the good deal front: Jefferson's very small batch. (not reserve) It is going for less than Eagle Rare at my local shop and it has a little more character than Buffalo Trace.
That is pretty much the local price I pay for Buffalo Trace. (BevMo and local shop). Is there high liquor tax in CO?
Yeah, it isn't bourbon, but not a bad sip. Jack Daniels has a new offering called White Rabbit. Commerating the 120th anniversary of after Jack's saloon, White Rabbit, in Lynchburg, Tennessee. I don't normally like Jack, but this is smooth.

Is BT that much more where y'all are cause it's consistently an $18 bottle here.
Huh.
Kentucky Distilleries? There's a map for that.

The guy who brought it is from Lexington and he said the same thing.
I have no idea if it's BS or not - would need to do a side-by-side blind test. Never had the Pappy 15. I liked the wheaty-ness(?) but then again I have no preconceptions what a Bourbon "should" taste like. I like them Rye spicy, corn sweet, and wheat mellow... all good as long as it's tasty.
^^ Ill try and remember to do this. Pappy 15 is great, havent tried the Weller 12 yet.
Weller 12 = Van Winkle 12 (allegedly), not Pappy 15.
Afaik weller is wheat backed and pappy is heavier on the rye, but I have heard the comparison before... Haven't compared myself.
Surprised nobody has brought up Parker's heritage (current release is 7th edition.) This stuff is seriously good! ~$100 so it better be. Probably the best high mark I have tasted. Another masterful whisky from heaven hill.
My favorite bourbon, especially considering the value, is Evan Williams single barrel. 10yr single barrel usually 27-30$
Also really big fan of Russell's reserve 10yr bourbon (also ~30$) and eagle rare and wild turkey rare breed
For ryes... Rittenhouse is my favorite... 100° bottled in bond and 25$. Perfect for manhattans or sippin
So the day after I post this I find this guy contributing to the WSJ article about the Tennessee state law regulating what can be called Tennessee Whiskey. As much as I color myself a Kentucky Bourbon fan/lay-connoisseur, I haven't run across this dude - he apparently knows his shit. Cool.
It's Diageo vs. Brown-Forman and interesting to say the least.

For those on Facebook there are bourbon groups. Lots of good info there. Lots of pics of nice hauls to make you jealous that they have way too much disposable income (guess I am there with beer). You can learn a lot and likely hook up with people in your area for tastings. I know I met some cool people on there. I'm sure there are many groups. Some are regional.
Not what I've heard but I've never had Weller 12. I'm trying to get all of the antique collection (owned by Buffalo trace like Pappy). If you go on the Buffalo Trace web page they show all the stuff they own. They own quite a bit of high end stuff including Pappy, etc...... Buffalo Trace itself is OK but nothing special. You can get it anywhere.
They actually say any of the Van Vinkle and most Pappy isn't the same anymore. Since Buffalo Trace bought them there really isn't much pappy that is aged "sazerzac juice." From my understanding only the Pappy 23 and maybe the 20 are from the juice I mentioned the last time they were released. Other than that it's slightly different from my understanding. All the van winkle and pappy I have had (all except 23) this year was really smooth and really not that hot compared to other stuff. They are still really smooth with less alcohol burn in the nose. They do something right.
It's either Kentucky or Tennessee (I think Kentucky) that the price of bourbon/whisky is set by the government so no stores can legally screw you over and charge twice or thrice the regular price as they sometimes do in some states/shops. I have been fortunate and everything I have bought has always been at retail but I'm starting to think about paying high to get the rest of the antique collection.
Edit: I still haven't opened any of my Van Winkles (one 10 and two 12 year Lot Bs). I am hoping to trade up but I think my liquor store will hook me up this year anyway. I did open my Thomas H Handy Sazerac that I got a few months ago. That stuff is REALLY smooth as will. I wouldn't pass it up for a bottle of the van winkles. In fact, the Thomas H Handy was 69.99 where the other bottles were 45 and 55 respectively.
I think after I finish my Founders Imperial Stout I'm gonna break out a little bit of the Handy. I want to make that bottle last. I usually just buy other stuff and save my good stuff. Kind of like my beer.
If anybody has any of the other antique collection or pappy 15 I have cash or some good beer to trade if you are reasonable. I can start out with a RARE if you want to start. I have others to put on top of that of course. I even picked up some double barrel Huna at Hunapuh Day in Florida. I have some decent bottles of beer to trade.
Edit: Thomas H Handy Sazerzac is only (handwritten) 128.4 proof. Pretty smooth for 64.2%
Yep. After just starting to get into ryes a little (trying to cut back on the beer for my belly), I was recommended Rittenhouse by a guy at my local liquor store. Great value. I'm sold. Been keeping a bottle of it and Bulleit Rye on hand lately. Some Templeton from time to time as well.
