Skined a lap at alpental today. Main lot was mostly full and skin track was poorly set but snow was nice if tracked up. Heard rumors they are hoping to open next weekend.

Untracked pow at xtal was quite deep today and of good quality overall. It was windy in exposed areas and slabs have patrol a lot of work but it skied well. The bottom of the mountain skied heavier but we only went there twice. I saw greenmachine and knew I was in the right place at the right time. Northway took a long time to open and we wasted ages waiting for it, but were rewarded. Much hooting and hollering took place.
If you didn’t come today to avoid crowds, you miscalculated. Compared to recent times, it was not crowded and I pretty much skied onto lifts most of the time.

Many peeps who work at dweebus the other day wondering why it's been so quiet in spite of great conditions. Interesting.
It was like pulling my own teeth to get motivated to go, mostly from the skiing shitshow hangover I have after the previous two seasons and not at all wanting to go through that fuckery any more.
I'm wondering if a lot of people are feeling the same way, hence the smaller than expected crowds.
I thought it was just me. I'm over the shit show, and spend most of my time trying to squeeze in and hour or two during the week or going late Sunday afternoons with the family.
I'm trying to dust off my BC gear and skills so I can get some soft snow skiing in. I don't envision myself fighting the crowds at the resort on a big day anymore.
For Crystal, most of my non-hardcore friends who went with Ikon went with the lower prices options that give them the fixed number of days (is it 7-days?). With unlimited access gone, they seem to be reserving those days for the peak of the season. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Big “powder days” in the PNW, especially near the crest, usually are accompanied by warmer temperatures and wind.

I also think people are hoarding their days. If I was able to use all 7 in a good December I’d consider it a success. Good early season is amazing to me.
Big snowfall days are often a gamble. It can be all time good or an all time waste of time if it’s too windy, upside down, or delayed. 6” have always been safer and more reliable for good skiing IMO but I try to figure out when the actually good deep days might happen. It’s just a gamble sometimes.
Lotta unconsolidated snow to the ground right now, First one of the season this weekend
Looks like Aply kicks off the season the weekend of Dec 16th

Crystal continued to ski well today. Southback opened and a lap down the king was in order. It was manky in Northway. The sun even poked out for a bit with the big one to boot. Was a fun day, walked on lifts all day and finished with a pitcher and a french dip at the elk. I love skiing.
Alpental now closed to uphill travel. Fun while it lasted.

$1,849 season passes is what is happening. I don't know anyone with a full Crystal season pass anymore. Everyone switched to mid-week, last chair, or changed resorts. I was at White Pass on Sunday. Lift ticket is $75 ($80 on initial visit). Contrast that to $159 at Crystal, $189 for the following weekend.
Don't get too exited though. I am sure those MBA bean counters at Alterra have realized they turned the Puget Sound skiing faucet a bit too far away from Crystal and will reduce prices a smidge next year in an effort to re-attract the masses.
Looks like a beautiful day out there, too bad I’m fighting whatever crud is going around.

You'll probably have more of the Ikon crowd that comes for the bluebird days and the kids. The powder hounds will always be showing up on a pow day. I'm hoping to make the journey North for at least one weekend this season. Miss that place.
I really love skiing alone. Those midweek pow days where I blow off work, get a quick 2-3hrs in on the mornings, No waiting, alone with my thoughts, so peaceful..
But fuck... Tree wells, landing upside down... even fucking up a knee I'm starting to second guess those plans..
Maybe ON3P is right. #GoSkiingWithYourFriends
RIP lone Snowboarder and condolences to friends and family.
Same.
Since my ski buddy decided to have 3 kids and put them each in multiple sports, I’m a solo skier 99% of the time.
These incidents are good reminders to play conservative.
RIP.

RIP. Back when I was young and dumb(er) I had this same type of incident, luckily only a close call, in that same zone. Chest deep, boards buried, awkwardly sideway bombhole landing. Alone.
A series of mistakes that you only make once.
You mean something glorious. Great couple days out there.
I heard it was on the Knob second-hand. I didn't hear if a small slide or tree well did it. Not fun to think about.
